In this study, contact fatigue in wheel-rail contact is simulated. It is necessary to calculate contact stress and subsurface stresses accurately to predict fatigue behavior. Contact stresses are obtained by contact analysis of semi-infinite solid based on influence function and subsurface stress field obtained by using rectangular patch solutions. Based on these stress values, several multiaxial high-cycle fatigue criteria are used and the critical loads corresponding to fatigue limits are calculated. The simulation results show that the critical load is decreasing rapidly and the site of crack initiation also moves rapidly to the surface from the subsurface when friction coefficient exceeds a specific value for all of three fatigue criteria.

This investigation evaluates dynamic fracture characteristics of two alloy steels (STD-11 and STS-3) and a gray cast iron (GC-30). The dynamic fracture toughness of crack initiation and some of the dynamic fracturing characteristics were evaluated by using the instrumented Charpy impact testing procedures. It was found from experimental results for three kinds of materials that inertia force is directly proportional to impact velocity. The duration time of inertia force was found to be constant regardless of impact velocities in steel specimens.

In this research, damage initiation in singly oriented ply (SOP) FML under concentrated loading conditions was studied. The finite element method (FEM) base on the first order shear deformation theory is used for the analysis of fiber orientation effect on FML under concentrated loading conditions. The failure indices were calculated for the variation of fiber orientation and the results were compared with indentation experiments. The failure indices were well matched with damage initiation of SOP FML. Indentation results shows that the crack initiation of SOP FML is determined by stiffness induced by fiber orientation and tile penetration load of SOP FML are influenced by the deformation tendency and boundary conditions.

The instrumented Charpy impact test is generally used to evaluate the dynamic fracture toughness for varying engineering materials. However, the test is known to be difficult to evaluate the dynamic fracture toughness for very brittle materials because of the small crack initiation load. To evaluate the dynamic fracture toughness of verybrittle materials, it is necessary to develop a load sensitive instrumented tup. In this study, a polymer tup, which has small Young's modulus, is used for the instrumented Charpyimpact test and a proper testing method is developed. The results show that the developed method can measure rapidly changing loads from the moment of contact between the tup and the specimen to dynamic crack initation of the very brittle materials.

The elastic dynamic crack curving could be obtained by controlling the loading rate, the initial crack-tip blunting to store much energy before crack initiation and the magnitude of reflected wave from finite boundaries. However there is no theoretical and experimental elastic-plastic dynamic curving study. This paper proposes a specimen geometryfor a study of dynamic elastic-plastic crack curving and presents a preliminary result. The specimen has a blunt physical crack tip on a side, and a round notch tip on the other side. From the experiment using this specimen, it is found that the narrow plastic zone ahead of the round notch tip produces the change of load direction and anti-symmetricity of the dynamic isochromatics, and each result causes the crack curving phenomenon. After a certain time, as the elastic-plastic crack gets close to the round notch tip near, the degree of the crack curving get larger. The elastic reack curving propagates more sensitively to the surround of crack tip than the plastic crack curving does. The cynamic elastic-plastic crack curving is found to be proportional to the CTOA(the crack tip opening angle). The dynamic elastic-plastic crack may propagate in the direction perpendicular to the loading. An apparant strip yield zone which is similar to the Dugdale strip yield zone is noted ahead of the physical crack tip.

Effects of circumferentially local wall thinning on the fracture behavior of pipes were investigated by monotonic four-point bending. Local wall thinning was machined on the pipes in order to simulate erosion/corrosion metal loss. The configurations of the eroded area included an eroded ratio of d/t= 0.2, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.8, and an eroded length of I = 10 mm, 25 mm, and 120 mm. Fracture type could be classified into ovalization, local buckling, and crack initiation depending on the eroded length and eroded ratio. Three-dimensional elasto-plastic analyses were also carried out using the finite element method, which is able to accurately simulate fracture behaviors excepting failure due to cracking. It was possible to predict the crack initiation point by estimating true fracture ductility under multi-axial stress conditions at the center of the eroded area.
The fracture toughness and crack propagation behaviors of short nylon66 fiber reinforced Chloroprene rubber nave been Investigated as functions of fiber aspect ratio, fiber content and interphase conditions. The J for crack initiation and rupture were determined for short-fiber reinforced rubber. The values of $J_c$ for most reinforced rubbers were low compared that of matrix. But, $J_r$ at rupture showed a higher value than that of matrix. The crack propagation behaviors were analyzed into 3 patterns with increasing fiber aspect ratio and fiber content. The tearing mechanisms of matrix and fiber reinforced rubber were observed by CCD camera focused on the tip of crack and load-displacement graph. Both cases showed a completely different behaviors

The numerical simulation of Brazilian fracture toughness test is carried out using PFC code and the influence parameters are analyzed such as shape of loading plane, size of Brazilian disc and unit panicle of model, loading angle and loading rate. The flattened Brazilian disc is adopted for applying uniform load. The range of loading angle(2$\alpha$) necessary to induce the tensile crack at disc center and to obtain the load-displacement curve giving the critical load for the stable crack propagation is shown as 20$^{\circ}$~40$^{\circ}$. In condition that the loading angle is 20$^{\circ}$, the mode-I fracture toughness is evaluated almost constant in the range of particle size less than I mm and loading rate less than 0.01 mm/s. This range of influence parameters seems appropriate condition for the tensile crack initiation at disc center and the control of stable crack propagation, which can give the reliance in evaluation of fracture toughness by Brazilian test.

Porous alumina with different porosities, 5.2 - 47.5%, were coated with cover-glass having a thickness of $160{\mu}m$, using epoxy adhesive. We investigated the effect of the porosity of the substrate layer on the crack initiation load, and the size of cracks propagated in the coating layer. Hertzian indentations were used to evaluate the damage behavior under a constrained loading condition. Typically, two types of cracks, ring cracks and radial cracks, were observed on the surface of the glass/porous alumina structure. Indentation stress-strain curves, crack initiation loads, crack propagation sizes, and flexural strengths were investigated as a function of porosities. The results indicated that a porosity of less than 30% and a higher substrate elastic modulus were beneficial at suppressing cracks occurrence and propagation. We expect lightweight mechanical components with high strength can be successfully fabricated by coating and controlling porosities in the substrate layer.
