The fatigue crack growth under mixed mode condition has been discussed within the scope of linear fracture mechanics such as maximum tangential stress, maximum tangential principal stress and minimum strain energy density. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of fatigue test crack growth in 304 stainless steel under mixed node. The fatigue test results carried out by using inclined pre-crack specimens was compared to both of the theoretical predictions of the criteria, maximum tangential stress and stain energy density. As difference from theoretical analysis, the transition region from mixed mode to mode I appeared in the fatigue test. There is deep relationship between the angle of slanted pre-crack and transition. Therefore, as applying the different stress intensity factor to each node I+II and mode I, the directions and rates of fatigue crack growth are evaluated more accurately under mixed mode.
In this paper, the effect of the crack growth length on the plastic zone size at the crack tip and the crack growth lives of the DENT specimen under constant amplitude cyclic loading were studied. The plastic zone size was calculated by nonlinear static method in commercial finite element analysis program, MSC/NASTRAN and the crack growth lives were also calculated by using compliance function considering geometric shape in MSC/FATIGUE. The calculated plastic zone size increased proportional to the crack length. And comparison of calculated plastic zone size and crack growth lives with the experimental results shows a good agreement.
FRANC3D is a program for simulating arbitrary three-dimensional crack growth. Recently, a completely new version of the program, FRANC3D/NG, has been created. Unlike previous versions, which relied largely on boundary element analysis, the new version of the program works with finite element analysis exclusively and is designed to work with general-purpose commercial finite element packages. This paper presents the theoretical underpinnings of the procedures to adaptively modify the geometry and mesh of a model to simulate crack growth.
In this study, statistical analysis of fatigue data which had obtained from respective 24 fatigue crack, was examined for SiC whisker reinforced aluminium 6061 composite alloy (SiC$_{w}$/A16061) and aluminium 6061 alloy. SiC volume fraction in composite alloy is 25%. The analysis results stress intensity factor range and 0.1 mm fatigue crack initiation life for SiC$_{w}$/A16061 composite & A16061 matrix are the log-normal distribution. And regression analysis by linear model, exponential model and multiplicative model were performed to find out the relationship between fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) and stress intensity for find out the relationship between fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) and stress intensity factor range(.DELTA.K) in the SiC$_{w}$/A16061 composite and examine the applicability of Paris' equation to SiC$_{w}$A16061 composite. Also computer simulation was performed for fatigue life prediction of SiC$_{w}$/A16061 composite using the statistical results of this study.udy.
To investigate the effect of fatigue crack growth due to the surface residual stress, it is measured the residual stress distribution by x-ray diffraction at the crack tip each constant crack growth in the notch specimens, and quantitively assessed the effect of crack closure caused to the distribution of compressive stress at the crack tip from evaluating crack openning stress using the finite element analysis. It is concluded that the degree of the residual stress distribution at the crack tip is decreased with increasing the crack length. From the fact that it is similar to the crack openning stress ratio, it is found that the compressive residual stress distribution and size is related to the crack closure effect and surface residual stress field with propagating crack in the notch specimens depends on the stress intensity factor range at the crack tip.
A correct understanding of vibration-based degradation is crucial from the standpoint of maintenance for Steam Generators (SG) as crucial mechanical equipment in nuclear power plants. This study has established a novel approach to developing a model for investigating tube bundle degradation according to crack growth caused by two-phase Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV). An important step in the approach is to calculate the two-phase flow field parameters between the SG tube bundles in various zones using the porous media model to determine the velocity and vapor volume fraction. Afterward, to determine the vibration properties of the tube bundles, the Fluid-Solid Interaction (FSI) analysis is performed in eighteen thermal-hydraulic zones. Tube bundle degradation based on crack growth using the sixteen most probable initial cracks and within each SG thermal-hydraulic zone is performed to calculate useful lifetime. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model, Paris law, and Wiener process model are considered to model the turbulent crossflow around the tube bundles, simulation of elliptical crack growth due to the vibration characteristics, and estimation of SG tube bundles degradation, respectively. The analysis shows that the tube deforms most noticeably in the zone with the highest velocity. As a result, cracks propagate more quickly in the tube with a higher height. In all simulations based on different initial crack sizes, it was observed that zone 16 experiences the greatest deformation and, subsequently, the fastest degradation, with a velocity and vapor volume fraction of 0.5 m/s and 0.4, respectively.
The effects of room temperature and strain aging treatment are discussed on the critical condition for the onset of growth of non-propagating cracks on 0.15% C low carbon steel, with special emphasis on the length of the critical non-propagating crack and on the crack opening displacement(COD) at the crack tip. It is found from the experimental analysis that room temperature and strain aging of a fatigue pre-cracked specimen introduced the closure of a crack tip of the pre-crack and the reduction of crack opening displacement at the wake of crack, together with an improvement in crack growth resistance of the microstructure. This may cause an increase in the endurance limit of the specimen, through the enhancement of effective stress for the onset of growth of the critical non-propagating crack.
The effect of loading waveform on elevated temperature low-cycle fatigue crack growth behavior in a SUS 304 stainless steel have been investigated under symmetrical trangular (fast-fast), trapezoidal and asymmetrical(fast-slow, slow-fast) waveforms at 650.deg. C. It was found that the crack growth rate in fast-slow loading waveform appeared to be higher a little and the crack growth rate in slow-fast loading waveform much higer than that in fast-fast loading waveform, and difference in crack growth rate between fast-show and slow-fast waveforms nearly didn't appear in the region of da/dN>10/sup -2/ The crack growth rate in the trapezoidal loading waveform with t/sub h/=500sec appeared to be faster than that in slow(500sec)-fast(1sec). In addition, parameter modified J-integral could be considered as useful parameter for fatigue crack growth rate in all waveforms. The result obtained are as follow. da/dN=4.91*10/sup -3/ (.DELTA. J/sub c/)/sup 0.565/.
It is well known that tensile peak overloads may significantly delay suubsequent constant amplitude fatigue crack growth in many materials. Since real structures are usually subjected to complex load histories, the ability to predict accurate crack growth under realistic service conditions is of major engineering interest. This paper describes experiments on fatigue track growth in the integrally stiffened panel of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy. The effect of shape parameters and overload position on the fatigue crack growth behavior of integrally stiffened panels are discussed. Based on the experimental results, the following conclusions have been drawn: the overall fatigue crack growth retardation resulting from single overload in the stiffened panels was generally larger in the larger thickness ratio, although the retardation trends, according to the change in overload positions, were similar to those exhibited in the non-stiffened panels.
This paper presents crack growth analysis approach on the basis of neural networks, a branch of cognitive science to high temperature low cycle fatigue that shows strong nonlinearity in material behavior. As the number of data patterns on crack growth increase, pattern classification occurs well and two point representation scheme with gradient of crack growth curve simulates crack growth rate better than one point representation scheme. Optimal number of learning data exists and excessive number of learning data increases estimated mean error with remarkable learning time J-da/dt relation predicted by neural networks shows that test condition with unlearned data is simulated well within estimated mean error(5%).
