  • Because sewer is embedded in land, the pollutant permeating to underground so fast can cause contamination of soil when crack of sewer occurs. In this study, numerical modelling on dispersion of pollutant at sewer crack was performed. Based upon the study, the following conclusions were obtained. It was shown that transfer direction of pollutant was similar to the flow with topography slope of surface. It was exposed that the pollutant permeated to 8~10m depth. It is expected to offer efficiency in sewer management in the future through this research.

  • It is important to prevent roll failure in hot rolling process for reducing maintenance coat and production loss. Roll material and rolling conditions such as the roll force and torque have been intensively investigated to overcome the roll failures. In this study, a computer roll life prediction system under working condition is developed and evaluated on IBM-PC level. The system is composed and fatigue estimation models which are stress analysis, crack propagation, wear and fatigue estimation. Roll damage can be predicted by calculating the stress anplification, crack depth propagation and fatigue level in the roll using this computer model. The developed system is applied to a work roll in actual hot rolling process for reliability evaluation. Roll failures can be diagnosed and the propriety of current working condition can be determined through roll life prediction simulation.

  • Fatigue crack growth model has been developed for dissimilar metal weld joints of a piping component under cyclic loading, where in the crack is located at the center of the weld in the circumferential direction. The fracture parameter, Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) has been computed by using principle of superposition as KH + KM. KH is evaluated by assuming that, the complete specimen is made of the material containing the notch location. In second stage, the stress field ahead of the crack tip, accounting for the strength mismatch, the applied load and geometry has been characterized to evaluate SIF (KM). For each incremental crack depth, stress field ahead of the crack tip has been quantified by using J-integral (elastic), mismatch ratio, plastic interaction factor and stress parallel to the crack surface. The associated constants for evaluation of KM have been computed by using the quantified stress field with respect to the distance from the crack tip. Net SIF (KH + KM) computed, has been used for the crack growth analysis and remaining life prediction by Paris crack growth model. To validate the model, SIF and remaining life has been predicted for a pipe made up of (i) SA312 Type 304LN austenitic stainless steel and SA508 Gr. 3 Cl. 1. Low alloy carbon steel (ii) welded SA312 Type 304LN austenitic stainless-steel pipe. From the studies, it is observed that the model could predict the remaining life of DMWJ piping components with a maximum difference of 15% compared to experimental observations.

  • This paper presents the crack effect on CIP anchors and prediction of tensile capacity, as governed by concrete cone failure. Single anchors where located at center of concrete specimen. Three different types of cracks such as crack width of 0.2 mm and 0.5 mm, crack depth of 10 cm and 20cm , and crack location of center and off-center point were simulated. Static tensile load was applied to 7/8-in. CIP anchors of 10 cm and 20 cm embedment length in concrete with compressive strength of 280 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Tested pullout capacities were compared to the values determined using current design methods (such as ACI 349-97, ACI 349 revision and CEB-FIP which is based on CCD Method). The comparison of CCD Method and ACI revision showed almost the same values in uncracked concrete specimen. In cracked concrete, CCD Method predicted conservative values. Three-dimensional non-linear FEM modeling also has been performed to determine the stresses distribution and crack inclination.

  • The probabilistic fracture analysis is used to determine the effects of uncertainties involved in material properties, location and size of flaws, etc, which can not be addressed using a deterministic approach. In this paper the probabilistic fracture analysis is applied for evaluating the RV(Reactor Vessel) under PTS(Pressurised Thermal Shock). A semi-elliptical axial crack is assumed in the inside surface of RV. The selected random parameters are initial crack depth, neutron fluence, chemical composition of material (copper, nickel and phosphorous) and $RT_{NDT}$. The deterministically calculated $K_I$ and crack tip temperature are used for the probabilistic calculation. Using Monte Carlo simulation, the crack initiation probability for fixed flaw and PNNL(Pacific Northwest National Laboratory) flaw distribution is calculated. As the results show initiation probability of fixed flaw is much higher than that of PNNL distribution, the postulated crack sizes of 1/10t in this paper and 1/4t of ASME are evaluated to be very conservative.

  • In this paper, the procedure to estimate fatigue crack initiation life has been established by considering fretting wear and multiaxial stress states on the contact surface of press-fitted shafts. And a method to calculate the local friction coefficient during the running-in period of fretting wear process has been proposed. The predicted result of worn surface profile in the press-fitted shaft with non-linear local friction coefficient can avoid excessive wear depth estimation compared with that for the case of constant local friction coefficient. Furthermore, the predicted fatigue crack initiation lives based on Smith-Watson-Topper model considering the fretting wear are in good agreement with the experimental data. Consequently, the present method is valid not only for predicting worn surface profile, but also for assessing fatigue crack initiation lives considering the fretting wear during the running-in period in press fits.

  • RC(Reinfored Concrete) structures exposed to carbonation in urban city have durability degradation with extended service life and cracks in concrete causes a local accelerated carbonation. In the present work, crack effect on carbonation depth is investigated and the service life of RC structure is evaluated considering cracks from early age and time-dependent cracks based on the previous field investigation. DFP(Durability Failure Probability), safety index, and the related service life are calculated considering the time to crack width reaches to maximum crack width(0.3mm). The results with time effect on crack width show lower DFP and longer service life, which seems to be reasonable compared with conservative results from crack effect from initial stage. Furthermore, crack effect is evaluated to be insignificant on DFP and service life. The technique with time-dependent crack effect on carbonation can be effectively used for RC structure containing cracking in use.

  • Laser-generated ultrasonic technique which is one of the reliable nondestructive evaluation techniques has been applied to evaluate the integrity of structures by analyzing the characteristics of signal obtained from surface crack. Therefore, the signal analysis of the laser-generated ultrasonics is absolutely necessary for the accurate and quantitative estimation of the surface defects. In this study, one-sided measurement by laser-generated ultrasonic has been applied to evaluate the depth of the surface-breaking crack in the materials. However, since the ultrasonic waveform excited by pulse laser is very difficult to distinguish the defect signals, it is necessary to consider the signal analyses of the transient waveform. Wavelet Transform(WT) is a powerful tool for processing transient signals with temporally varying spectra that helps to resolve high and low frequency transient components effectively. In this paper, the analyses of the surface-breaking crack of the ultrasonic signal excited by pulse laser are presented by employing the WT analyses.

  • The precast pannels are used as formwork in Half-depth precast deck systems. Therefore, it has many advantages, including safe and convenient construction and reduced construction period compared to cast-in-place construction method. In half-depth precast deck systems, the bonding of precast pannels to cast-in place concrete is very important. To enhance the performance of half-depth precast deck system, it is necessary to improve the composite efficiency of the interface or increase the stiffness of the precast pannel to reduce deformation or stress on the interface. In this study, a flexural test of half-depth precast deck system was performed, in which the shear connecting reinforcement was applied to increase the bonding performance at the interface, and the rib shape precast panels were applied to improve stiffness. In addition, the safety and serviceability of these systems were evaluated. Test results show that all of specimens have the required flexural strength under the ultimate strength limit design. It was also evaluated to have sufficient safety for the serviceability of deflection and crack under the serviceability limit design.

  • In order to reduce the accidents occurring at construction sites, it is necessary to approach with harmonious measures considering various aspects such as systems, training, facilities, and protection equipments. Suggestion of safe construction method can be a good alternative. In the previous study, the half-depth precast deck with RC rib panel was proposed as an alternative method for safe bridge deck construction, and the performance required by the design code was verified through a four-point bending test. But the actual bridge deck is subjected to the repetitive action of the wheel load rather than the bending condition due to the four-point load. In this study, fatigue test was performed by repeating the wheel load $2{\times}10^6$ cycles to verify the safety of the half-depth precast deck with RC rib panel under actual conditions. As a result, fatigue effect due to repetition of wheel load was not significant in terms of serviceability such as crack width and deflection. In the residual strength test conducted after the fatigue test, the half-depth precast deck with RC rib panel failed by punching shear which is typical failure mode of bridge decks and the residual strength was similar to the punching strength of the RC and PSC bridge decks in spite of the fatigue effects.
