We reported compositional separation(CS) into Co-enriched and Cri-enriched components inside the grains of Co-Cr based thin films prepared by rf sputtering. CS strongly depends on the sputtering conditions of substrate temperature and target composition. Tuning the microstructure of the Co-Cr films is important in order to employ the CS for high-density magnetic recording. We investigated the origin of CS from thermodynamic viewpoint. We employ a spinodal decomposition-like model to describe the origin of the CS in Co-Cr films. We consider the total free energy of the Co-Cr films as the sum of several free energies of; 1) thermodynamic mixing entropy of a binary solid solution, 2) magnetic ordering interaction(MOI) energy below the Curie temperature, and 3) excess interaction energy(XS) caused by the sputtering process as a function of temperature and composition. Those energies distorted the total free energy like the spinodal decomposition and caused the compositionally separated fine microstructure inside the grains. If the second derivative of the total free energy with respect to Cr composition becomes negative at a given substrate temperature, we may observe a metastable compositional separation inside the Co-Cr alloy films. We expect to exploit the microstructure of CS for ultra-high density magnetic recording.
The effects of carbide and matrix structures on the abrasion wear resistance of multi-component white cast irons with 3.0 mass%C have been studied in this paper. Four different heats were poured in order to obtain the specimens with different combinations of the carbide structures: a basic iron(3.0 mass%C-5.0 mass%Cr-5.0 mass%V-5.0 mass% Mo-12.5mass%W)for M$_{6}$C and M$_{7}$C$_{3}$ carbides, and a Cr free iron(3.0 mass%C-5.0 mass%V-2.5mass%Mo-12.5 mass%W) for MC and M6C carbides. A conventional high Cr free free iron(3.0 mass%C-5.0 mass%V-2.5 mass%Mo-12.5 mass%W) for MC and M6C carbides. A conventional high Cr white cast iron was also poured to compare its wear resistance with those of the multi-component white cast irons. In the as-cast condition, the range of abrasive wear rate(Rw=mg/min) was from 4.15 to 5.98 . The lowest Rw, which means the highest wear resistance, was obtained in the basic iron with nodular MC, lamellar M$_{2}$C and cellular M$_{7}$C$_{3}$ carbides. On the other hand, the Rw of the high Cr white cast iron ranked between the basic iron and the Mo and W free iron. In each alloy, the Rw of air hardened or tempered specimen was lower than that of the as-cast one because of the change of matrix structures by the heat treatments. The Rw of the hear treated speci-mens increased in the order Mo and W free iron, basic iron, Cr free iron, high Cr iron, and V free iron.n.n.n.
Earlier studies have demonstrated that chromium (Cr) Ⅵ compounds have been shown to be more toxic and carcinogenic than other chromium compounds. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the antioxidant effects of red ginseng against chromium Ⅵ-induced toxicity and free radical generation. Sixty adult male rats were divided into six equal groups include: control group, group received Cr Ⅵ alone (50 mg/kg b.w.), group treated with Korean ginseng (K. ginseng) alone (20 mg/kg b.w), group treated with Cr Ⅵ for 15 days then received K. ginseng for other 15 days, group treated with Cr Ⅵ and K. ginseng at the same time for 15 days, and group treated with K. ginseng for 15 days then Cr Ⅵ for other 15 days. The results revealed that Cr Ⅵ caused significant increase in ALT, AST, ALP, G-GT, urea, creatinine, and acid phosphatase. Whereas, it caused significant decrease in TP, albumin, testosterone, GPX, and SOD indicating a stress for liver, kidney and testes. K. ginseng alone caused significant increase in GPX and SOD activities in healthy animals and this result suggests a prophylactic role for this herb in protection against the damaging impact induced by free radical species. Furthermore, the other biochemical parameters measured after K. ginseng administration were comparable to the control values. Treatment with Cr Ⅵ followed by K. ginseng, Cr Ⅵ and K. ginseng or K. ginseng followed by Cr Ⅵ resulted in significant improvement in all tested parameters towards the normal values of the controls. However, this improvement was pronounced in the group pre-treated with K. ginseng for 15 days before Cr Ⅵ administration. It could be concluded that K. ginseng exhibited a protective action against the toxic effects of Cr Ⅵ and it had the ability to scavenge free radicals resulted from Cr Ⅵ intoxication.

The aim of the present work was to evaluate the antioxidant effects of red ginseng against chromium VI -induced toxicity and free radical generation. Sixty adult male rats were divided into six equal groups include: control group, group received Cr VI alone (50 mg/kg b.w.), group treated with Korean ginseng (K. ginseng) alone (20 mg/kg b.w), group treated with Cr VI for 15 days then received K. ginseng for other 15 days, group treated with Cr VI and K. ginseng at the same time for 15 days, and group treated with K. ginseng for 15 days then Cr VI for other 15 days. In this work, CR (Chloroprene Rubber) was emulsified by phase-inversion emulsification with nonionic surfactants (NP-1025, LE-1017, and OP-1019) and an anionic surfactant (SDBS; sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate), and its stabilization was investigated through a study of its adsorption characteristics, zeta potential, and flow behavior. As the amount of the mixed surfactant increased, the droplet size decreased, resulting in the increase of viscosity. In particular, a CR emulsion with a lower absorbance in the UV spectrum exhibited the highest zeta potential. The results of this experiment showed that the CR emulsion prepared using (LE-1017) and SDBS was the most stable. In this study, calcium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide were added to enhance the mechanical properties of the CR emulsion, and the relationship between tensile strength, tear strength and surface free energy were investigated. The tensile and tear strengths of the CR emulsion incresed as the amount of calcium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide increased. The highest tensile and tear strengths and surface free energy were observed for additions of 1.0% calcium hydroxide and 0.80% aluminum hydroxide, respectively. It was concluded that the interfacial bonding strength was improved by the even dispersion of calcium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide in the CR emulsion.
Cr (Ⅵ) - containing compounds are well-established carcinogens, although the mechanism for chromium - induced carcinogenesis is still not well understood. The reduction of Cr (Ⅵ) to its lower oxidation states, par ticularly Cr (V) and Cr (IV), is an important step for the production of chromium-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS). The persistent oxidative stress during the reduction process may play a key role in the mechanism of Cr (Ⅵ) -induced carcinogenesis. This paper summarizes recent studies on (1) the reduction of Cr (Ⅵ) to Cr (III) occur by a multiplicity of mechanisms depending on the nature of reducing agents including ascorbate, diol-and thiol-containing molecules, certain flavoenzymes, cell organelles, intact cells, and whole animals; (2) free-radical production with emphasis on hydroxy radical generation via Fenton or Haber-Weiss type reactions; and (3) free radical - induced cellular damage, such at DNA strand breaks, hydroxylation of 2'-deoxyguanosine, and activation of nuclear transcription factor kB.
The production of reactive oxygen species on addition of hexavalent chromium (potassium dichromate, $K_2Cr_2O_7$ ) to lung cells in culture was studied using flow cytometer analysis. A Coulter Epics Profile flow cytometer was used to detect the formation of reactive oxygen species after $K_2Cr_2O_7$ was added to A549 cells grown to confluence. The cells were loaded with the dye, 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate, after which cellular esterases removed the acetate groups and the dye was trapped intracellularly. Reactive oxygen species oxidized the dye, with resultant fluorescence. Increased doses of Cr(VI) caused increasing fluorescence (10-fold higher than background at 200 gM). Addition of Cr(III) compounds, as the picolinate or chloride, caused no increased fluorescence. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic studies indicated that three (as yet unidentified) spectral "signals" of the free radical type were formed on addition of 20, 50, 100 and 200 gM Cr(VI) to the A549 cells in suspension. Two other EPR 'signals" with the characteristics of Cr(V) entities were seen at field values lower than the standard free radical value. radical value.
