  • The steel for automotive exhaust system needs a good corrosion resistance at the atmosphere of high temperature NaCl. Effect of the alloying elements Me, Ti, Nb on the NaCl induced hot corrosion behavior was investigated at the temperatures between 55$0^{\circ}C$ and 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 18Cr ferritic stainless steels. The weight loss by corrosion has increased linearly with corrosion cycle time, and the corrosion rate has accelerated at higher temperature. The alloying of Mo significantly improved corrosion resistance of the steel and the effect was more pronounced at higher temperature. The addition of alloying elements Ti, Nb have also shown improved corrosion resistance by formation of Ti(C,N) or Nb(C, N) precipitates.

  • High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are characterized by having five or more main elements and forming simple solids without forming intermetallic compounds, owing to the high entropy effect. HEAs with these characteristics are being researched as structural materials for extreme environments. Conventional refractory alloys have excellent high-temperature strength and stability; however, problems occur when they are used extensively in a high-temperature environment, leading to reduced fatigue properties due to oxidation or a limited service life. In contrast, refractory entropy alloys, which provide refractory properties to entropy alloys, can address these issues and improve the high-temperature stability of the alloy through phase control when designed based on existing refractory alloy elements. Refractory high-entropy alloys require sufficient milling time while in the process of mechanical alloying because of the brittleness of the added elements. Consequently, the high-energy milling process must be optimized because of the possibility of contamination of the alloyed powder during prolonged milling. In this study, we investigated the high-temperature oxidation behavior of refractory high-entropy alloys while optimizing the milling time.

  • Some alloying elements such as Cr, B, Ti and Si were added individually or as a mixture to Fe-30 at.%Al alloys. The alloys were melted using an arc furnace and then heat-treated for homogenization at 1000$^{\circ}C$ for 7 days and followed by rolling at 1000$^{\circ}C$. The alloying elements on rolling characteristics were investigated by the microstructures and fracture mode before and after rolling. The microstructures before rolling showed that all of the alloys had equiaxed grains. On the other hand, the microstructures of rolling plane as well as its perpendicular plane became elongated after rolling. The alloys such as Fe-30Al, Fe-30Al-3Ti, Fe-30Al-0.5B, Fe-30Al-5Cr and Fe-30Al-3Ti-0.5B revealed better rolling behaviour from the point that intergranular and cleavage fractures were not fundamentally occurred. But the addition of 5Ti or 3Si to Fe-Al alloys had detrimental effects. The Ti-added alloy system such as Fe-30Al-5Ti, Fe-30Al-5Ti-5Cr, Fe-30Al-3Ti-5Cr and Fe-30Al-5Ti-0.5B were cracked through grain and showed cleavage fracture. The Si-added alloy system such as Fe-30Al-5Si, Fe-27Al-3Si and Fe-27Al-5Cr-3Si were cracked along the grain boundary and showed intergranular fracture. $DO_3{\leftrightarrow}B_2$ transition temperature of Fe-30at.%Al alloy was 520$^{\circ}C$, whereas the addition of 3Ti and 3Ti+0.5B comparably increased the temperature to 797 and 773$^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Hydrogen and hydrogen energy have been recognized as clean energy sources and high energy carrier. Mg and Mg alloys are attractive hydrogen storage materials because of their lightweight and low cost materials with high hydrogen capacity (about 7.6 wt.%). However, the commercial applications of the Mg hydrides are currently hinder by its high absorption/desorption temperature, and very slow reaction kinetics. However, Ti and Ti based hydrogen storage alloys have been thought to be the third generation of alloys with a high hydrogen capacity, which makes it difficult to handle because of high reactivity. One of the most methods to develope kinetics was addition of transition metal. Therefore, Mg-Ti-Cr-Nb alloy was fabricated to add TiCrNb by hydrogen induced mechanical alloying. TiCrNb systems have included transition metals, low operating temperatures and hydrogen storage materials. As-received specimens were characterized using X-ray Diffraction analysis (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Thermo Gravimetric analysis/Differential Scanning Calorimetry (TG/DSC). $Mg-TiCr_{10}Nb$ systems were evaluated for hydrogen kinetics by Sievert's type Pressure-Composition-Isotherm (PCI) equipment. The operating temperature range was 473, 523, 573 and 623 K.

  • The present study examines the sintering behaviour and effect of manganese addition both mechanically-blended and mechanically alloyed on Cr-Mo low alloyed steels to enhance the mechanical properties. Mn sublimation during sintering provides some specific phenomena which facilitate the sintering of alloying elements with high oxygen affinity. First step is the optimization of milling time to attain a master alloy with 50% of Mn which is diluted in Fe-1.5Cr-0.2Mo water atomized prealloyed powder by normal mixing. These mixtures are pressed to a green density of $7.1g/cm^3$ and sintered at $1120^{\circ}C$ in $90N_2-10H_2$ atmosphere.

  • Alloyed ohmic contact properties of Au-Zn/Au, Au-Be/Au,Au-Zn/Cr/Au, and Au-Be/Cr/Au metal system to p-InP were investigated. Optimum alloying conditions were obtained at the annealing temperature of 425\ulcorner for all the metal systems using a rapid thermal annealing system. Surface AES analysis and auger depth profiling were done for each metal system annealed at the optimum conditions. Outdiffusions of In and P from the InP substrate were found in the metal systems without Cr intermediate layer. Also, small amount of In. P and Cr were detected at the surface in the case of Au-Zn/Cr/Au system, while there were occured no outdiffusion of In, P, and Cr for Au-Be/Cr/Au system. The best surface morpholoty and specific contact resistivity of 4.5x 10**-5 \ulcornercm\ulcornerhave been obtained in this Au-Be/Cr/Au material system alloyed at 425\ulcorner for 60 second.

  • Al-Cr-Zr nanocomposite metal powders were prepared by mechnical alloying (MA) in order to develop aircraft structure materials with lighter weight and lower cost than the conventional Ti and Ni alloys. The morphological changes and microstrutural evolution of Al-6wt.%Cr-3wt.%Zr nanocomposite metal powders during MA were investigated by SEM, XRD and TEM. The approximately 50$\mu$m sized Al-Cr-Zr nanocomposite metal powders has been formed after 20 h of MA. The individual X-ray diffraction peaks of Al, Cr and Zr were broadened and peak intensitied were decreased as a function of MA time. The observed Al crystallite size by TEM was in the range of 20 nm, which is a simliar value calculated by Scherrer equation. The microhardness of Al-Cr-Zr nanocomposite metal powders increases alomost linearly with increase of the processing time, reaching a saturation hardness value of 127 kg/$mm^2$ after 20 h of processing. The intermetallic compound phase of $Al_3Zr_4$ in the matrix was identifed by XRD and TEM.

  • Mechanical alloying (MA) by ball mill of $Fe_{30}Cr_{70}$ elemental powders was carried out under the nitrogen gas atmosphere. Amorphization has been observed in this case, while MA under an inert argon gas atmosphere produces the bcc solid solution. The DSC spectrum for the mechanically alloyed $(Fe_{30}Cr_{70})_{0.85}N_{0.15)$powders exhibits a sharp exothermic peak due to crystallization at about $550^{\circ}C$. Structural transformation from the bcc crystalline to amorphous states was observed through X-ray and neutron diffractions. During amorphization process the octahedral unit, which is typical of a polyhedron formed in any crystal structures, was preferentially destroyed and transformed into the tetrahedral unit. Futhermore, neutron diffraction measurements revealed that a nitrogen atom is situated at a center of the tetrahedron formed by metal atoms.

  • The effects of Cr, Mo or B additions were investigated on $B2{\leftrightarrow}DO_3$ structural transition temperature $(T_C)$ and mechanical properties of Fe-28at.%Al. The raw materials were arc-melted in vacuum and then subjected to the following heat-treatments to maximize the $DO_3$ ordered structure : $1000^{\circ}C/7days$, slowly cooled to $500^{\circ}C$ and then held for 5 days. In the effect on the grain refinment, the addition of alloying element B was the most effective. The addition of Cr or Mo had little effect. When 1at.%Mo was added, $T_c$ increase about $30^{\circ}C$, but Cr had a very little effect on $T_c$. On the contrary, when B was added, $T_c$ was apt to come down minutely. In the additional effect of alloying element on the mechanical properties, Cr was apt to decrease the microvickers hardness and yield strength, Mo and B didn't have much effect. In the case of compressure strength test, the effect of the environment on the yield strength was contrary to the result of the tensile strength test.

  • A Study on microstructure and elevated temperature strength of 18Cr-2Mo ferritic stainless steel castings strengthened by alloying small amounts of titanium and carbon, has been conducted. The morphology of titanium carbides showed spherical in shape and their distribution depended on the amount of alloying elements. Maximum density ($7{\times}10^5/cm^2$) of titanium carbides has been formed in the alloy containing 2.0 wt.% titanium and 0.5 wt.% carbon as alloying elements and the size of carbide particles is in the range of 0.5 to $3.0\;{\mu}m$. High temperature tensile and fatigue strength of this alloy were the highest among the alloys tested in this research. The fracture mode of the alloys containing alloying elements less that 2.0 wt.% titanium and 0.5 wt.% carbon showed intercrystalline fracture at room temperature, while the alloys containing higher amounts of alloying elements showed transcrystalline fracture. All of the alloys showed creep or ductile rupture mode at elevated temperature.
