  • Metal hydride alloys of TiFe based system have been produced by mechanical alloying(MA) method and their electrochemical characteristics have been evaluated for application for Ni/MH battery electrode. These alloys became amorphous after 36hrs ball milling and easily activated electrochemically. All MA amorphous alloys reached at the first charge/discharge cycle the maximum capacity which was 2-3 times higher than the crystalline state. But their cyclic lives were much inferior to the crystalline state. Alloying elements such as Ni, Co, Cr, Mo substituting Fe greatly improved the capacity and 180 mAh/g capacity was obtained in an alloy of TiFe_{0.6}Ni_{0.1}Co_{0.1}Cr_{0.1}Mo_{0.1}$.

  • The results of the modification of metal materials treated by high temperature pulst:d plasma fluxes (HTlPPF) with a specific power of incident flux changing in the $(3...100)10^5{]\;}W/cm^2$ range and a pulse duration lying from 15 to $50{\;}\mu\textrm{s}$ have been presented. The results of HTPPF action were studied on the stainless steels of 18Cr-l0Ni, 16Cr- 15Ni, 13Cr-2Mo types; on the structural carbon steels of (13...35)Cr, St. 3, St. 20, St. 45 types; on the tool steels of U8, 65G, ShHI5 types, and others; on nickel and high nickel alloy of 20Cr-45Ni type; on zirconium- and vanadium-base alloys and other materials. The microstructure and properties (mechanical, tribological, erosion, and other properties) of modified materials and surface alloying of metals exposed to HTPPF action have been investigated. It was found that the modification of materials by HTPPF resulted in a simultaneous increase of several properties of the treated articles: microhardness of the surface and layers of 40...60 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in depth, tribological characteristics (friction coefficient, wear resistance), mechanical properties ({\sigma_y}, {\;}{\sigma_{0.2}}.{\;}{\sigma_r}) on retention of the initial plasticity ($\delta$), corrosion resistance, radistanation erosion under ion irradiation, and others. The determining factor of the changes observed is the structural-phase modification of the near-surface layers, in particular, the formation of the fine cellular structure in the near-surface layers at a depth of $20{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$ with dimension of cells changing in the range from 0.1 to $1., 5{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$, depending on the kind of material, its preliminary treatment, and the parameters of plasma fluxes. The remits obtained have shown the possibility of purposeful surface alloying of metals exposed to HTPPF action over a depth up to 20...45 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and the concentration of alloying element (Ni, Cr, V) up to 20 wt.%. Possible industrial brunches for using the treatment have been also considered, as well as some results on modifying the serial industrial articles by HTPPF.

  • Mechanical alloying was carried out to produce $CrSi_2$ thermoelectric compound using a mixture of elemental $Cr_{33}Si_{67}$ powders. An optimal milling and heat treatment conditions to obtain the single phase of $CrSi_2$ compound with fine microstructure were investigated by X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry measurement. $CrSi_2$ intermetallic compound with a grain size of 70 nm could be obtained by MA of $Cr_{33}Si_{67}$ powders for 70 hours and subsequently annealed at $650^{\circ}C$. Consolidation of the MA powders was performed in a spark plasma sintering (SPS) machine using graphite dies at $600{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ under 60 MPa. The shrinkage of MA samples during SPS consolidation process increased gradually with increasing temperature up to $1000^{\circ}C$ and relatively significant at about $600^{\circ}C$. We tend to believe that these behaviors are deeply related to form a $CrSi_2$ compound during heating process, as can be realized from the DSC measurement. Electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of sintered bodies were measured up to $900^{\circ}C$. Seebeck coefficient and power factor of $Cr_{33}Si_{67}$ compact prepared by MA and SPS at $1000^{\circ}C$ showed the maximum value of $125{\mu}V/K$ at $400^{\circ}C$ and $4.3{\times}10^{-4}W/mK^2$ at $350^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Co-0.5C-(15~20)Cr-20Ni-8W-(2~7)Fe alloy bond in diamond-impregnated abrasive tool was synthesized by ball-milling and mechanical alloying process. When the powders were mechanical alloyed for 6h, micro-welding in most metal powders was observed irrespective of addition of stearic acid. Without stearic acid in metal powders, partial-ly coarse powders were obtained, which could be unfaverable to the densification of composite of composite powders. The hot-pressed compacts showed rupture strength of 1100MPa and hardness of about $46H_{RC}$, respectively.

  • The precipitation behaviors of ${\gamma}"(Ni_3Nb)$ in four Ni-base alloys were investigated. The four alloys were forged Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy, mechanically alloyed Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy, IN 718 alloy and ECAPed(equal channel angular pressing) IN 718 alloy. Aging treatment was employed at either $600^{\circ}C$ or $720^{\circ}C$ for 20 hrs. The TEM observation and hardness test were performed to identify the formation of ${\gamma}"$. The precipitation of ${\gamma}"$ was noticed after aging at $600^{\circ}C$ for 20 hrs in the mechanically alloyed Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and ECAPed IN 718 alloy, while it was observed after aging at $720^{\circ}C$ for 20 hrs in the forged Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and IN 718 alloy before ECAP. The lower aging temperature for ${\gamma}"$ precipitation in the mechanically alloyed Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and ECAPed IN 718 alloy than in the forged Ni20Cr20Fe5Nb alloy and IN 718 alloy before ECAP appeared to be due to the severe plastic deformation which occurred during mechanical alloying or ECAP.

  • The surface characteristics of 13Cr stainless steel systems by plasma nitriding were investigated. The plasma nitriding for the 13Cr steels, in which the nitriding forming elements such as Ti, V, W, Nb, Al, Zr and Si were added about 2~3wt.%, respectively, was performed. In all nitrided specimens, .epsilon.-F $e_{2-3}$N, UPSILON.'-F $e_{4}$N and CrN were detected as the nitrides with the a-Fe in the nitrided layer. VN and .betha.- $W_{2}$N were also detected in 13Cr-3V and 13Cr-3W alloys. The growth of the nitrided layer was controlled by the diffusion process. The thickness of the nitrided layer was similar in the 13Cr-2Nb and 3Zr specimens to that of 13Cr(BM) specimen, while the others exhibited the thinner layer. The activation energy for the growth of the nitrided layer in the temperature range of 773-873K was about 130kJ/mol in 13Cr(BM), 13Cr-2Ti, 3W, 3Al, 3Zr and 3Si alloys. The hardness of the nitrided specimens was significantly increased above Hv1000, comparing to the non-nitrided specimen. The specimens with the nitrided forming elements revealed much higher hardness values and, especially, 13Cr-3Al, 3V and 3Si specimens were significantly hardened up to Hv1300.v1300.0.

  • Effects of alloying elements on the surface characteristics of Fe-38Al intermetallic compounds were investigated using potentiostat. The specimens were casted by the vacuum arc melting. The subsequent homogenization and the stabilization led to the homogeneous DO$_3$ structure of the specimen. After the corrosion tests, the surface of the tested specimen was observed by the optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). For Fe-38 at.% Al intermetallic compound, the addition of Cr and Mo proved to be beneficial in decreasing the grain boundary attack by decreasing the active current density. Addition of Band Nb resulted in a higher active current density and also a higher passive current density. These results indicated the role of Cr and Mo in improving the pitting corrosion resistance of Fe-38 at.%Al intermetallic compound. Band Nb addition to Fe-38 at.%Al accelerated the granular corrosion. Fe-38 at.%Al containing Cr and Mo showed remarkably improved pitting corrosion resistance in comparison with Band Nb addition to Fe-38 at. %Al.

  • The development of mechanical alloying (MA)-oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) heat-resistant ferritic alloys of Fe-12%Cr with W, Ti and Y₂O₃additions were carried out. Fe-12%Cr alloys with 3%W, 0.4%Ti and 0.25% Y₂O₃additions showed a much finer and more uniform dispersion of oxide particles among the alloy system studied. Nano-sized oxides dispersed in the alloys suppress the grain growth during annealing at a high temperature and resulted in the remarkable improvement of creep strength. The oxide phase was identified as a complex oxide type of Y-Ti-O.

  • An effective way of increasing the strength and fracture toughness of reactor pressure vessel steels is to change the material specification from that of Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel(SA508 Gr.3) to Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel(SA508 Gr.4N). In this study, we evaluate the effects of alloying elements on the microstructural characteristics of Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel. The changes in the stable phase of the SA508 Gr.4N low alloy steel with alloying elements were evaluated by means of a thermodynamic calculation conducted with the software ThermoCalc. The changes were then compared with the observed microstructural results. The calculation of Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steels confirms that the ferrite formation temperature decreases as the Ni content increases because of the austenite stabilization effect. Consequently, in the microscopic observation, the lath martensitic structure becomes finer as the Ni content increases. However, Ni does not affect the carbide phases such as $M_{23}C_6 $ and $M_7C_3$. When the Cr content decreases, the carbide phases become unstable and carbide coarsening can be observed. With an increase in the Mo content, the $M_2C$ phase becomes stable instead of the $M_7C_3$ phase. This behavior is also observed in TEM. From the calculation results and the observation results of the microstructure, the thermodynamic calculation can be used to predict the precipitation behavior.

  • The Al-Cr-Zr composite metal powders were prepared by mechanical alloying and consolidated by vacuum hot pressing. The microstructural characteristics and the thermal stability of the MA Al-Cr-Zr alloys were evaluated by means of microhardness measurement, XRD and TEM in order to develop high temperature, high strength aluminum alloys. The mechanical alloying was conducted in attritor with 300rpm for 20 hours. The density of the vacuum hot pressed Al-Cr-Zr alloy reached at 97% of theoretical one. After exposing at $300^{\circ}C$ for 100 hours, there is almost no variation in hardness change of the MA alloys. Even after exposing at $ 500^{\circ}C$ for 100 hours, the hardness of the alloy was decreased within 6% of the initial value. The fine stable $Al_3Zr\;and\; Al_{13}Cr_2$ intermetallics were formed at the stage of consolidation and heat treatment in aluminum matrix. The good thermal stability of the MA Al-Cr-Zr alloy can ab attributed to the role of the dispersoids, inhibiting grain growth of nanocrystalline, and the final grain size after heat treatment was less than 150nm.
