  • Ti and Ti alloys are known to have excellent corrosion properties, which is an important aspect for biocompability of these implants in human body. In our study, four types of samples (Cp-Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, $0.5wt.\%$ Fe-Ti and ECAP Ti) were tested for their apatite forming ability and corrosion properties. The micropolished samples were treated with 5M NaOH solution at $60^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. Each samples was gently washed with distilled water and heat-treated at 600"C for 1 hour. The heat-treated samples were soaked in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) solution at $36.5^{\circ}C$ in an incubator for different period of time. The test revealed that $0.5 wt.\%$ Fe-Ti showing faster apatite growth on the surface (7th day) compared to other samples. Polarization curve test (PCT) was also carried out to determine the corrosion resistance of each samples in SBF solution. ECAP-Ti showed highest corrosion resistance compared to any other samples. $0.5wt.\%Fe-Ti$ showed higher corrosion potential and corrosion current compared to other samples.

  • In this study. we have intended to control the properties of surface reaction zone generated between pure titanium and oxide investment moulds. Commercially pure titanium was centrifugally casted and silica$.$alumina based phosphate bonded investment was used as the mould material. The effect of cooling methods after casting on the surface reaction zone and mechanical properties of casts were investigated. The resulting casts showed the multilayered surface reaction zone regardless of cooling method. Especially. water cooling method produced the titanium casts with thinner surface reaction zone. weaker strength. and higher elongation properties compared to air cooling. It can thus be known that the resulting casts had satisfactory mechanical properties as dental materials. From these results, the cooling rate dependence of interfacial and mechanical properties can be attributed to the diffusion of oxygen from casting environment, which control the reaction of titanium and mould.

  • The oligo(methylsilene) (1) was treated with the group 4 metallocene Cp2MCl2/Red-Al (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) combination catalysts and with the group 6 metal carbonyl M(CO)6 (M = Cr, W) catalysts, producing the modified, cross-linked polymers. The average molecular weights and percent ceramic residue yields of modified polymers increase as the catalyst goes down from Ti to Hf and similarly as the catalyst goes down from Cr to W. An interrelationship between average molecular weights and percent ceramic residue yield is found within the respective group of catalysts, but is not observed as the catalyst goes down from Ti to W. The polymers modified with the group 4 metallocene combination catalysts have higher molecular weights and similar percent ceramic residue yields as compared to the polymers modified with the group 6 metal carbonyl catalysts. The catalytic activities of group 4 metallocene combinations appear to be higher -100 ℃, but to be lower at very high temperature than those of group 6 metal carbonyls.

  • An ideal orthopedic implant should provide an excellent bone-implant connection, less implant loosening and minimum adverse reactions. Commercial pure titanium (CP-Ti) and Ti alloys have been widely utilized for biomedical applications such as orthopedic and dental implants. However, being bioinert, the integration of such implant in bone was not in good condition to achieve improved osseointegraiton, there have been many efforts to modify the composition and topography of implant surface. These processes are generally classified as physical, chemical, and electrochemical methods. Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) as an electrochemical route has been recently utilized to produce this kind of composite coatings. Mg ion plays a key role in bone metabolism, since it influences osteoblast and osteoclast activity. From previous studies, it has been found that Mg ions improve the bone formation on Ti alloys. PEO is a promising technology to produce porous and firmly adherent inorganic Mg containing $TiO_2$($Mg-TiO_2$ ) coatings on Ti surface, and the amount of Mg introduced into the coatings can be optimized by altering the electrolyte composition. In this study, a series of $Mg-TiO_2$ coatings are produced on Ti-6Al-4V ELI dental implant using PEO, with the substitution degree, respectively, at 0, 5, 10 and 20%. Based on the preliminary analysis of the coating structure, composition and morphology, a bone like apatite formation model is used to evaluate the in vitro biological responses at the bone-implant interface. The enhancement of the bone like apatite forming ability arises from $Mg-TiO_2$ surface, which has formed the reduction of the Mg ions. The promising results successfully demonstrate the immense potential of $Mg-TiO_2$ coatings in dental and biomaterials applications.

  • To test the efficiency of the BDD electrode for complete mineralization of organic wastewater, phenol and 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) were treated electrochemically with both an active Pt/Ti electrode and a nonactive boron doped diamond (BDD) electrode, respectively, in neutral aqueous medium. Aqueous solutions of both phenol and 2-chlorophenol were treated electrochemically using an in-house fabricated flow through electrochemical cell (FTEC). The experimental variables included current input, treatment time, and the flow rate of the solutions. Depending on the magnitude of the applied current and reaction time, the compounds were either completely degraded or partially oxidized to other intermediates. Removal efficiencies reached as high as 93.2% and 94.8% both at the Pt/Ti electrode and BDD electrode, respectively, at an applied current of 200 mA for a 3.0 hr reaction and a flow rate of 4 mL/min. The BDD electrode was much more efficient for the complete mineralization of phenol and 2-chlorophenol than the Pt/Ti electrode.

  • In this study, Ti-X (X=Mn, Fe, Mo) powder alloys were designed and manufactured by both powder metallurgy (PM) and metal powder injection molding (MIM) process to improve strength and formability compared to CP-Ti powder materials. It was found that the lamellar microstructure consisted of α and β phases was formed in PM-processed alloys. However, MIM-processed alloys showed not the lamellar microstucture but the equiaxed α + β microstructure. It was also revealed that the contents of X component and feedstock were not affected to microstructure evolution. The reason why different microstructure was appeared between PM-processed and MIM-processed alloys is not clear yet, but supposed to be the effect of intersticial elements such as C, H and N derived from feedstock during debinding process of MIM.

  • This minireview provides the chosen examples of our recent discoveries in the polymerization of hydrosilanes, dihydrosilole, lactones, and vinyl derivatives using various catalysts. Hydrosilanes and lactones copolymerize to give poly(lactone-co-silane)s with $Cp_2MCl_2$/Red-Al (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) catalyst. Hydrosilanes (including dihydrosilole) reduce noble metal complexes (e.g., $AgNO_3$, $Ag_2SO_4$, $HAuCl_4$, $H_2PtCl_6$) to give nanoparticles along with silicon polymers such as polysilanes, polysilole, polysiloxanes (and silicas) depending on the reaction conditions. Interestingly, phenylsilane dehydrocoupled to polyphenylsilane in the inert nitrogen atmosphere while phenylsilane dehydrocoupled to silica in the ambient air atmosphere. $Cp_2M/CX_4$ (M = Fe, Co, Ni; X = Cl, Br, I) combination initiate the polymerization of vinyl monomers. In the photopolymerization of vinyl monomers using $Cp_2M/CCl_4$ (M = Fe, Co, Ni), the photopolymerization of MMA initiated by $Cp_2M/CCl_4$ (M = Fe, Co, Ni) shows while the polymerization yield decreases in the order $Cp_2Fe$ > $Cp_2Ni$ > $Cp_2Co$, the molecular weight decreases in the order $Cp_2Co$ > $Cp_2Ni$ > $Cp_2Fe$. For the photohomopolymerization and photocopolymerization of MA and AA, the similar trends were observed. The photopolymerizations are not living. Many exciting possibilities remain to be examined and some of them are demonstrated in the body of the minireview.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface properties and biological response of an anodized titanium surface by cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase activity analysis. Methods: Commercial pure titanium (Ti) disks were prepared. The samples were divided into an untreated machined Ti group and anodized Ti group. The anodization of cp-Ti was formed using a constant voltage of 270 V for 60 seconds. The surface properties were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and an image analyzing microscope. The surface roughness was evaluated by atomic force microscopy and a profilometer. The contact angle and surface energy were analyzed. Cell adhesion, cell proliferation, and alkaline phosphatase activity were evaluated using mouse $MC_3T_3-E_1$ cells. Results: The anodized Ti group had a more porous and thicker layer on its surface. The surface roughness of the two groups measured by the profilometer showed no significant difference (P>0.001). The anodized Ti dioxide ($TiO_2$) surface exhibited better corrosion resistance and showed a significantly lower contact angle than the machined Ti surface (P>0.001). Although there was no significant difference in the cell viability between the two groups (P>0.001), the anodized $TiO_2$ surface showed significantly enhanced alkaline phosphatase activity (P<0.001). Conclusions: These results suggest that the surface modification of Ti by anodic oxidation improved the osteogenic response of the osteoblast cells.

  • Single pulse of 2.0 to 3.5 kJ from $150{\mu}F$ capacitor was applied to the cp Ti rod for its surface modification and heat treatment. Under the conditions of using 2.0 and 2.5 kJ of input energy, no phase transformation has been occurred. However, the hardness and tensile strength decreased and the elongation increased after a discharge due to a slight grain growth. By using more than 3.0 kJ of input energy, the electro discharge made a phase transformation and the hardness at the edge of the cross section increased significantly. The Ti rod before a discharge was lightly oxidized and was primarily in the form of $TiO_2$. However, the surface of the Ti rod has been instantaneously modified by a discharge into the main form of TiN from $TiO_2$. Therefore, the electro discharge can modify its surface chemistry in times as short as $200{\mu}sec$ by manipulating the input energy, capacitance, and discharging environment.

  • Both commercially pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy have been widely used as biomaterials because of their excellent biocompatibility, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. However, in recent years, vanadium has been found to cause cytotoxic effects and adverse tissue reactions, while aluminium has been associated with potential neurological disorders. A newly designed ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ type Ti alloy, Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy showed superior properties to CP Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy in the point of biomaterial, and elucidated the future uses as a biomaterial. Microstructural changes of Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy after hot-rolling, warm-rolling, solution and aging treatment were investigated. According to TEM results, the microstructures after solution treatment were composed of mostly ${\alpha}$ phase with a trace of ${\beta}$ phase due to adding ${\beta}$-phase stabilizer tantalum and niobium. The microstructures after warm-rolling is coarse and elongated ${\alpha}$ phase and hot rolling resulted in very fine ${\alpha}$ widmanst$\ddot{a}$tten. The highest value of hardness was obtained by aging treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 20hr in which microstructure consisted of very fine ${\alpha}$ phase in ${\beta}$ matrix.
