  • Let $C(F, M)$ and $C(S^{-1}F, S^{-1}M)$ be Cousin complexes for a modula M and a module $S^{-1}M$ over a commutative Noetherian ring with respect to a filtration F and a filtration $S^{-1}F$ respectively. In this paper, it is shown that there is an isomorphism between the Cousin complexes $S^{-1}C(F, M)$ and $C(S^{-1}F, S^{-1}M)$.

  • Jeon and Buss (2007) found that human altruistic tendencies towards different categories of cousins are adaptively regulated as a consequence of paternity uncertainty. Since the study sample was drawn from a large US city where the effects of patrilineality may be week, the question of whether descent systems also independently affect cousin-directed altruism remained unanswered. We replicated the cousin-directed altruism study in a population of urban Korean college students, who have lived in a highly patrilineal society. As predicted, mother's sister's children were favored the most, followed by both mother's brother's and father's sister's children. Contrary to our predictions, however, father's brother's children was more, not less, favored than either mother's brother's or father's sister's children. We discuss why this cross-cultural difference may be observed with regard to the highly patrilineal culture in Korea.

  • Objectives : Two related cases of Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome (HUS) were reported to the Korea National Institute of Health in May, 2001. Shiga toxin 2 genes were detected in both stool samples. We suspected an enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) infection as the cause of the HUS, and conducted an investigation to find the source of the infection and its route of transmission. Methods : We peformed case investigations on these two related HUS cases, and obtained interviews and rectal swabs form the family members and other close contacts. Additionally, we peformed rectal swabs on the cattle raised by the household of the index patient. Results : We found a 20 month old index patient and a 6 year-old cousin had developed HUS, where there had been a 2 day history of contact with the index, and bacteriological examinations for these two patients revealed, indistinguishably, the same E. coli O171. The grandmother of the index patient was found to be asymptomatic, but E. coli O26 was isolated. We also found a probable case in the mother of the cousin. She reported a history of contact with the index, and developed bloody diarrhea of 3 days duration. The test results for the cattle revealed E. coli O26 in one cow, and E. coli O26 and O55 in another. E. coli O26, which was isolated in both cows and the grandmother of the index, were indistinguishably the same. Conclusions : We found that the E. coli O26 in the grandmother had originated from the cows, and that the E. coli O171 found in the index patient had been transmitted to the cousin through person-to-person contact.

  • Noun phrase coordination is an extremely productive phenomenon. Based on an observation that conjuncts tend to denote semantically related concepts, we collect four hundred thousand pairs of conjuncts from the British National Corpus, in an attempt to build an is-a hierarchy of English noun concepts. The modifiedness patterns of the two words in these pairs point to three distinct semantic relations: sibling, cousin, and ancestor-or-ancestor' sibling. The process of finding them and how these pairs are used to motivate groups of quasi-synonyms and then to locate the hypernyms are discussed.

  • Hereditary pancreatitis (HP) appears as an autosomal dominant trait. If the patient has (1) more than 2 affected relatives in different generations and (2) no known etiological factors such as alcohol or gallstones, or has R122H or N29I mutation in the cationic trypsinogen (CT) gene, the diagnosis of HP can be applied. Risk of pancreatic cancer is estimated to be 53-fold higher than in a general population after the age of 50 years. We report a kindredof HP, involving three of its family together; two siblings (14 years old, 13 years old) and cousin (26 years old). The patient had complicating chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic stone, and was treated with amodified Puestow-Gillesby procedure. Her sisters showed chronic pancreatitis. Her cousin underwent a drainage procedure of the pancreatic duct for chronic pancreatitis during the high school period. All the three members showed the R122H mutation of the CT gene.

  • The nature of the exotic stellar corpses which reincarnate by consuming their companion is reviewed. Apart from sucking life from their partners, they are actually eating the doomed companions away by their deadly and powerful particle/radiation beams. Such situation resembles that a female "black widow" spider that eats its mate after mating. These celestial zombies are called - Millisecond pulsars (MSPs). In this review article, I will focus on the effort of Fermi Asian Network (FAN) in exploring these intricating objects over the last five years. Two special classes of MSPs are particularly striking. Since Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has started surveying the gamma-ray sky, the population of "black widows" has been boosted. Another dramatic class is so-called "redbacks" (Australian cousin of "black widows") which has just emerged in the last few years. These MSPs provide us with a long-sought missing link in understanding the transition between accretion-powered and rotation-powered systems. The strategy of hunting MSPs through mulitwavelength observations of the unidentified Fermi objects is also reviewed.

  • In this paper, the ring A will mean a commutative Noetherian ring with non-zero multiplicative identity, it is understood that the ring homomorphisms respect identity elements and M will denote an A-module. Throughout this paper A and B will denote rings, $f : A \to B$ a ring homomorphism. C(A) (resp. C(B)) presents the category of all A-modules (resp. B-modules) and A-homomorphisms (resp. B-homorphisms) between them. The following ideas will be used without further explanation. B can be regarded as an A-module by means of f and $M\otimesB$ can be regarded as a B-module in the natural way. Furthermore the restriction of scalars provides a functor from C(B) to C(A).

  • Occurrence of breast cancer is related to genetic as well as cultural, environmental and life-style factors. Variations in diversity of these factors among different ethnic groups and geographical areas emphasize the immense need for studies in all racial-ethnic populations. The incidence of breast cancer in Pakistan is highest in Asians after Jews in Israel and 2.5 times higher than that in neighboring countries like Iran and India, accounting for 34.6% of female cancers. The Pakistani population is deficient in information regarding breast cancer etiology and epidemiology, but efforts done so far had suggested consanguinity as a major risk factor for frequent mutations leading to breast cancer and has also shed light on genetic origins in different ethnic groups within Pakistan. World-wide research efforts on different ethnicities have enhanced our understanding of genetic predisposition to breast cancer but despite these discoveries, 75% of the familial risk of breast cancer remains unexplained, highlighting the fact that the majority of breast cancer susceptibility genes remain unidentified. For this purpose Pakistani population provides a strong genetic pool to elucidate the genetic etiology of breast cancer because of cousin marriages. In this review, we describe the known breast cancer predisposition factors found in the local Pakistani population and the epidemiological research work done to emphasize the importance of exploring factors/variants contributing to breast cance, in order to prevent, cure and decrease its incidence in our country.
