  • Mn/In$_2O_3$ systems with a variety of Mn mol${\%}$ were prepared to investigate the effect of Mn-addition on the catalytic activity of Mn/In$_2O_3$ in the oxidative coupling of methane. The oxidative coupling of methane was examined on pure In$_2O_3$ and Mn/In$_2O_3$ catalysts by cofeeding gaseous methane and oxygen under atmospheric pressure between 650 and 830 $^{\circ}C$. Although pure In$_2O_3$ showed no C$_2$ selectivity, both the C$_2$ yield and the C$_2$ selectivity were increased by Mn-doping. The 5.1 mol${\%}$ Mn-doped In$_2O_3$ catalyst showed the best C$_2$ yield of 2.6${\%}$ with a selectivity of 19.1${\%}$. The electrical conductivities of pure and Mn-doped In$_2O_3$ systems were measured in the temperature range of 25 to 100 $^{\circ}C$ at PO$_2$'S of 1 ${\times}$ 10$^{-7}$ to 1 ${\times}$ 10 $^{-1}$ atm. The electrical conductivities were decreased with increasing Mn mol${\%}$ and PO$_2$, indicating the specimens to be n-type semiconductors. Electrons serve as the carriers and manganese can act as an electron acceptor in the specimens. Manganese ions doped in In$_2O_3$ inhibit the ionization of neutral interstitial indium or the transfer of lattice indium to interstitial sites and increase the formation of oxygen vacancy, giving rise to the increase of the concentration of active oxygen ion on the surface. It is suggested that the active oxygen species adsorbed on oxygen vacancies are responsible for the activation of methane.

  • Without a definitive resolution of stoichiometry of cardiac Na$^{+}$-Ca$^{2+}$exchange (NCX), we cannot proceed to any quantitative analysis of exchange function as well as cardiac excitation-contraction coupling. The stoichiometry of cardiac NCX, however, is presently in doubt because reversal potentials determined by various groups range between those expected for a 3-to-1 and a 4-to-1 flux coupling. For a new perspective on this problem, we have used ion-selective microelectrodes to quantify directly exchanger-mediated fluxes of $Ca^{2+}$and Na$^{+}$in giant membrane patches. $Ca^{2+}$- and Na$^{+}$-selective microelectrodes, fabricated from quartz capillaries, are placed inside of the patch pipettes to detect extracellular ion transients associated with exchange activity. Ion changes are monitored at various distances from the membrane, and the absolute ion fluxes through NCX are determined via simulations of ion diffusion and compared with standard ion fluxes (Ca$^{2+}$ fluxes mediated by $Ca^{2+}$ ionophore, and Na$^{+}$ fluxes through gramicidin channels and Na$^{+}$/K$^{+}$pumps). Both guinea pig myocytes and NCX1-expressing BHK cells were employed, and for both systems the calculated stoichiometries for inward and outward exchange currents range between 3.2- and 3.4-to-1. The coupling ratios do not change significantly when currents are varied by changing cytoplasmic [Ca$^{2+}$] or by adding cytoplasmic Na$^{+}$. The exchanger reversal potentials, measured in both systems under several ionic conditions, range from 3.1- to 3.3-to-1. Taken together, a clear discrepancy from a NCX stoichiometry of 3-to-1 was obtained. Further definitive experiments are required to acquire a fixed number, and the present working hypothesis is that NCX current has an extra current via ‘conduction mode’.ent via ‘conduction mode’.

  • The glutamate decarboxylase gene (gadB) from Lactobacillus plantarum WCFS1 was cloned and expressed as an N-terminal hexa-histidine-tagged fusion protein in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) as the host strain. Purified glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) was immobilized onto porous silica beads by covalent coupling. The pH dependence of activity and stability of the immobilized GAD was significantly altered, when compared to those of the free enzyme. Immobilized GAD was stable in the range of pH 3.5 to 6.0. The resulting packed-bed reactor produced 41.7 g of γ-aminobutyric acid/l·h at 45℃.

  • This paper deals with a new approach to the modelling of neural interactions in the cerebellar cortex to construct a general purpose electronic simulation model. Since physiological data show that cerebellar neural activity changes in an approximately pulse manner in response to pulse stimulation, the differences in timing between excitation and inhibition of cerebellar cells will be treated as pure time delays and the transfer functions of the cells will be presented by pure gains. The parameters to be discussed in this paper are the coupling coefficients between a cell and its several inputs, the magnitude of a coupling coefficient which is presented as a measure of how much influnce a particular has on its target cell. And also this paper has been proposed that the cerrbellum engaged in improving the overall performance of the motor control system, i.e., the cerebellum is a compensator.

  • Nickel nanoparticle-poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone)/$TiO_2-ZrO_2$ composite (Ni-PVP/$TiO_2-ZrO_2$) was prepared by in situ polymerization method. The physical and chemical properties of Ni-PVP/$TiO_2-ZrO_2$ were investigated by XRD, FT-IR, BET, TGA, SEM and TEM techniques. The catalytic performance of this novel heterogeneous catalyst was determined for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction between aryl halides and phenylboronic acid in the presence of methanol-water mixture as solvent. The effects of reaction temperature, the amount of catalyst, amount of support, solvent, and amount of metal for the synthesis of Ni-PVP/$TiO_2-ZrO_2$, were investigated as well as recyclability of the heterogeneous composite. The catalyst used for this synthetically useful transformation showed considerable level of reusability besides very good activity.

  • Gene encoding cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase), from thermotolerant Paenibacillus sp. T16 isolated from hot spring area in northern Thailand, was cloned and expressed in E. coli (JM109). The nucleotide sequences of both wild type and transformed CGTases consisted of 2139 bp open reading frame, 713 deduced amino acids residues with difference of 4 amino acid residues. The recombinant cells required 24 h culture time and a neutral pH for culture medium to produce compatible amount of CGTase compared to 72 h culture time and pH 10 for wild type. The recombinant and wild-type CGTases were purified by starch adsorption and phenyl sepharose column chromatography and characterized in parallel. Both enzymes showed molecular weight of 77 kDa and similar optimum pHs and temperatures with recombinant enzyme showing broader range. There were some significant difference in pH, temperature stability and kinetic parameters. The presence of high starch concentration resulted in higher thermostability in recombinant enzyme than the wild type. The recombinant enzyme was more stable at higher temperature and lower pH, with lower $K_m$ for coupling reaction using cellobiose and cyclodextrins as substrates.

  • In the operation of large capacity hydro generators, it's a very important thing that to minimize several kind of electrical trouble and accident. In order to overcome these problems, the on-line and off-line partial discharge (PD) measuring method has become an important one. Nowadays, epoxy mica coupler(EMC) has been the most widely used sensors for on-line PD detection in rotating machines. This time, we have made a ceramic coupling sensor using $SrTiO_{3}$, because at present, most of sensors has high cost and difficult procedure to making. This paper deals with the electrical characteristics of a ceramic coupling sensor, which has been made to continuously measure PD activity during the operation condition for 13kV class hydro generator. And we have performed the evaluation of sensor life and reliability based on the characteristic testing. The experimental results confirm that the sensor has satisfied at electrical required performance and output characteristic for simulated input signal.

  • The piezoelectric ceramics for AE sensor piezoelectric devices are desirable to possess higher resonance vibrations. The compositions of $0.9Pb(Zr_xTi_{1-x})O_3-0.1Pb(Mn_{1/3}Nb_{1/3}Sb_{1/3})O_3$ (PZT-PMNS) in this work are selected for obtaining especially large electromechanical coupling factor, high mechanical quality factor and high Curie temperature. This ceramic has higher piezoelectric activity and higher electromechanical coupling factor, but the ceramic has lower Curie temperature. The piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics of PZT-PMNS ternary system are investigated as functions of $Ti^{2+}$, $Zi^{2+}$ mol rate. As the results, MPB(morphotropic phase boundary) in this piezoelectric ceramic is x=0.522. Resonance vibrations of PZT ceramics are investigated as ball-bearing drop test. For the use of AE sensor that driving with pre-amplifier, filter circuit after packed this ceramic and an elastic body.

  • This study was conducted to find a catalyst system which has high conversion and selectivity for the oxidative coupling of methane to produce ethane and ethylene. Various catalysts were tested in a fixed bed reactor ar $750^{\circ}C$, 1 atm, and the feed ratio($CH_4/O_2$) of 2/1. Under the reaction condition, 10wt%$PbSO_4/MgO$ catalyst showed the highest catalytic activity : methane conversion, $C_2$ selectivity and yield were 50, 40 and 20%, respectively. Catalysts containing sulfate compounds, 10wt%$PbSO_4/MgO$, 10wt%$MgSO_4/MgO$ and $Na_2SO_4/MgO$ revealed a moderate methane conversions such as 38, 50 and 50%, respectively and low $C_2$ selectivities such as 18, 5 and 9%, respectively. Catalysts containing carbonate compounds, 10wt%$PbCO_3/MgO$, 10wt%$Li_2CO_3/MgO$ and $NaCO_3/MgO$, also showed a moderate methane conversions such as 64, 44 and 51%, respectively and low $C_2$ selectivities such as 5, 6 and 2%, respectively. With the existence of chlorine and mercury, $C_2$ selectivity was decreased.

  • The enzymatic properties of NADH:quinone oxidoreductase were examined in Triton X-100 extracts of Bacillus cereus membranes by using the artificial electron acceptors ubiquinone-1 and menadione. Membranes were prepared from B. cereus KCTC 3674 grown aerobically on a complex medium and oxidized with NADH exclusively, whereas deamino-NADH was determined to be poorly oxidized. The NADH oxidase activity was lost completely by solubilization of the membranes with Triton X-100. However, by using the artificial electron acceptors ubiquinone-1 and menadione, NADH oxidation could be observed. The activities of NADH:ubiquinone-1 and NADH:menadione oxidoreductase were enhanced approximately 8-fold and 4-fold, respectively, from the Triton X-100 extracted membranes. The maximum activity of FAD-dependent NADH:ubiquinone-1 oxidoreductase was obtained at about pH 6.0 in the presence of 0.1M NaCl, while the maximum activity of FAD-dependent NADH:menadione oxidoreductase was obtained at about pH 8.0 in the presence of 0.1M NaCl. The activities of the NADH:ubiquinone-1 and NADH:menadione oxidoreductase were very resistant to such respiratory chain inhibitors as rotenone, capsaicin, and $AgNO_3$, whereas these activities were sensitive to 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide (HQNO). Based on these results, we suggest that the aerobic respiratory chain-linked NADH oxidase system of B. cereus KCTC 3674 possesses an HQNO-sensitive NADH:quinone oxidoreductase that lacks an energy coupling site containing FAD as a cofactor.
