Switching phenomenon of a three-waveguide optical coupler was analyzed by using the coupled mode theory, and the coupling-length of the device was calculated by means of the FDM. CPW traveling-wave electrodes were designed by the CMM and SOR simulation techniques so as to satisfy the conditions of phase-velocity and impedance matching. Traveling-wave modulators were fabricated on a z-cut LiNbO$_3$ substrate. Ti was in-diffused in LiNbO$_3$ to make waveguides and Au electrodes were built on the waveguides by the electroplating technique. Insertion loss and switching voltage of the optical modulator were about 4 ㏈ and 15.6V. Network analyzer was used to obtain S parameters and corresponding RF response. From the measurement, parameters of the traveling-wave electrodes were extracted as such Z$_{c}$=39.2 $\Omega$, Neff=2.48, and a0=0.0665/cm((GHz) (1/2)). The measured optical response R(w) was compared with the theoretically estimated and both responses were shown to agree well. The measurement results revealed that the ㏈ bandwidth turned out to be about 13 GHz.

The braking system is one of the most important components in vehicles and machines. It must exert a reliable braking force when they are brought to a halt. Generally, frictional heat is generated by converting kinetic energy into heat energy through friction. As the kinetic energy is converted into heat energy, high temperature heat is generated which affects the mechanical behavior of the braking system. Frictional heat affects the thermal expansion and friction coefficient of the brake system. If the temperature is not controlled, the brake performance will be decreased. Therefore, it is important to predict and control the heat generation of the brake. Various numerical analysis studies have been carried out to predict the frictional heat, but they assumed the existence of boundary conditions in the numerical analysis to simulate the frictional heat, because the simulation of frictional heat is difficult and time consuming. The results were based on the assumption that the frictional heat is different from the actual temperature distribution in a rotating brake system. Therefore, the reliability of the cooling effect or thermal stress using the results of these studies is insufficient. In order to overcome these limitations and establish a simulation procedure to predict the frictional heat, this study directly simulates the frictional heat generation by using a thermal-structure coupling element. In this study, we analyzed the thermo-mechanical behavior of a brake model, in order to investigate the thermal characteristics of brake systems by using the Finite Element method (FEM). This study suggests the necessity to directly simulate the frictional heating and it is hoped that it can provide the necessary information for simulations.

Climate change is impacting and will increasingly impact both the quantity and quality of the world's water resources in a variety of ways. In some areas warming climate results in increased rainfall, surface runoff, and groundwater recharge while in others there may be declines in all of these. Water quality is described by a number of variables. Some are directly impacted by climate change. Temperature is an obvious example. Notably, increased atmospheric concentrations of $CO_2$ triggering climate change increase the $CO_2$ dissolving into water. This has manifold consequences including decreased pH and increased alkalinity, with resultant increases in dissolved concentrations of the minerals in geologic materials contacted by such water. Climate change is also expected to increase the number and intensity of extreme climate events, with related hydrologic changes. A simple framework has been developed in New Zealand for assessing and predicting climate change impacts on water resources. Assessment is largely based on trend analysis of historic data using the non-parametric Mann-Kendall method. Trend analysis requires long-term, regular monitoring data for both climate and hydrologic variables. Data quality is of primary importance and data gaps must be avoided. Quantitative prediction of climate change impacts on the quantity of water resources can be accomplished by computer modelling. This requires the serial coupling of various models. For example, regional downscaling of results from a world-wide general circulation model (GCM) can be used to forecast temperatures and precipitation for various emissions scenarios in specific catchments. Mechanistic or artificial intelligence modelling can then be used with these inputs to simulate climate change impacts over time, such as changes in streamflow, groundwater-surface water interactions, and changes in groundwater levels. The Waimea Plains catchment in New Zealand was selected for a test application of these assessment and prediction methods. This catchment is predicted to undergo relatively minor impacts due to climate change. All available climate and hydrologic databases were obtained and analyzed. These included climate (temperature, precipitation, solar radiation and sunshine hours, evapotranspiration, humidity, and cloud cover) and hydrologic (streamflow and quality and groundwater levels and quality) records. Results varied but there were indications of atmospheric temperature increasing, rainfall decreasing, streamflow decreasing, and groundwater level decreasing trends. Artificial intelligence modelling was applied to predict water usage, rainfall recharge of groundwater, and upstream flow for two regionally downscaled climate change scenarios (A1B and A2). The AI methods used were multi-layer perceptron (MLP) with extended Kalman filtering (EKF), genetic programming (GP), and a dynamic neuro-fuzzy local modelling system (DNFLMS), respectively. These were then used as inputs to a mechanistic groundwater flow-surface water interaction model (MODFLOW). A DNFLMS was also used to simulate downstream flow and groundwater levels for comparison with MODFLOW outputs. MODFLOW and DNFLMS outputs were consistent. They indicated declines in streamflow on the order of 21 to 23% for MODFLOW and DNFLMS (A1B scenario), respectively, and 27% in both cases for the A2 scenario under severe drought conditions by 2058-2059, with little if any change in groundwater levels.

The SAR patterns of biological objects contacted with coaxial waveguide antennal has been investigated, in which the biological object was modeled by a homogeneous and four-layered lossy human body. We derived the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) algorithm and equation of MUR and generalized perfectly matched layer(GPML) ABCs in cylindrical coordination. The coupling between coaxial waveguide antenna and a biological object was analyzed by use of MUR and GPML ABCs in the FDTD method to obtain the absorbed power patterns in the media. The specific absorption rates (SAR) distribution which was corresponding to the temperature distribution was calculated in each region by use of the steady-state response in the FDTD method. The SAR patterns of the FDTD method using MUR absorbing boundary conditions(ABCs) was compared with those of the FDTD method using GPML ABCs. The comparison exhibits that the penetration depth of the SAR patterns using MUR ABCs is deeper than that of the SAR patterns using GPML ABCs because of loss in free space. However, the spread in the lateral directions of the SAR patterns using GPML ABCs is smaller than of the SAR patterns using MUR ABCs.

Large span spaces have been widely used for various purposes including sports events in other countries. Due to increasing demands on multi-purpose use of such spaces, recently built large span sport facilities such dome stadiums have been required to accommodate sport events as well as performing events. Also, retractable ceilings and/or walls were generally adopted in those spaces for providing various event conditions. It seems obvious that the openings between diffuse fields and free field may cause difficulties in the acoustic design of such spaces In the present work, the acoustic characteristics of non-diffuse field has been investigated using 1/10 acoustic scale models. It was found that RTs at low- and mid-frequencies decayed faster than those at high-frequencies as the percentage of opening area increased. The decay rate of RTs at high frequencies were not influenced by increasing the area of an opening. Also high dependence of EDT on the percentage of opening area was observed at all frequency range. D50 was not improved by increasing the area of an opening up to 12.5% and then sharply increased. The application of Schroeder integration to evaluate the reverberation charateristics of coupled spaces may not be proper, since non-exponential decay process with double or triple decays of those spaces can not be properly defined. EDT seems more appropriate to predict reverberation at the early acoustic design stage of acoustically coupled spaces.
In this study, the pull out resistance characteristics of an anchor bar to support a spillway installed in a slope are investigated by field tests. The injection materials were a cement mortar and cement milk. Unconfined compression strengths of those materials under several conditions were measured. As the result of compression test, the unconfined compression strengths of the cement mortar and the cement milk have positive proportional relation-ship with the water-cement ratio. They also have negative proportional relationship with increasing the curing time. In the same condition of water-cement ratio and curing time, the unconfined compression strength of cement milk is larger than that of cement mortar. In order to reduce the eccentricity in anchor bar during pull-out test in the field, the installation apparatus was improved by inserting a nut type of steel fixing coupling into the anchor bar. As the result of the pull-out test, the strength modification of cement milk was increased steeply at the early curing time. However, that of cement mortar was increased gradually with passing the curing time. Therefore, the cement milk has to use as the injection material for a prompt construction of anchor bar because the strength modification of cement milk is occurred at the early curing time.

Recently, the installation of photovoltaic(PV) systems has been increasing due to the worldwide interest in eco-friendly and abundant solar energy. On the other hand, a PV system has approximately 25% power loss while the energy generated from solar cells is transformed to the power coupling point through a power conversion system (DC/AC). If the output voltage of a string in the PV system is lower than the operating range of the inverter when a part of module in the string has a shadow due to weather conditions, the string is not synchronized and the whole efficiency of output power in a PV system may be reduced significantly. Therefore, to overcome this problem, this paper proposes a novel control method to compensate for the lower voltage by introducing a DC/DC voltage regulator for each string in a PV system, which adopts a concept for MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) control function using the P&O algorithm and adopts constant voltage control method used in an existing inverter. This paper also implements a 2kW DC/DC voltage regulator based on the proposed algorithm and performs a variety of scenario-based experiments. From the simulation result, it was confirmed that the operation efficiency in the proposed method is improved compared to the existing method.
In this study, we prepared a silver nanoparticle transferable adhesive composition with transparency and adhesive properties using UV-curable urethane acrylate containing silane groups. The urethane-based adhesive composition was applied between the Ag/PET film in which silver nanoparticles were patterned on PET and the PC film to be transferred. Immediately after UV-curing with UV, PET was removed to complete the manufacture of Ag/PC film. UV-curable urethane acrylate containing silane groups was synthesized using polycaprolactone diol (PCL), isophrone diisocyanate (IPDI), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES). The silane group of APTES can improve interfacial adhesion by reacting with the specially treated silver nanoparticle surface of the Ag/PET film. In addition, we improved the adhesion between silver nanoparticle and PC film by mixing UV-curable urethane acrylate containing a silane group and a functional acrylic diluent used as a diluent. We analyzed the synthesis process of urethane acrylate using FT-IR, and compared the adhesive properties, optical properties, and transfer properties according to the molar ratio of APTES and the acrylic diluent composition. As a result, the best transfer properties were confirmed in the adhesive composition prepared under the conditions of PUA2S1_0.5.

In this study, air density in a narrow test section is measured using a laser absorption spectroscopy system that detects oxygen absorption lines. An absorption line pair at 13156.28 and 13156.62 cm-1 are detected. A gas chamber with a height of 40 mm is used as a narrow test section. A triangular spiral-shaped laser path is applied in the gas chamber to amplify absorption strength by extending laser beam path length. A well-known logarithm amplifier and a secondary amplifier are used to electrically amplify absorption signal. An AC-coupling is applied after the logarithm amplifier for signal saturation prevention and noise suppression. Procedure of calculating spectral absorbance from output signal is introduced considering the logarithm amplifier circuit configuration. Air density is determined by fitting the theoretically calculated spectral absorbance to the measured spectral absorbance. Test conditions with room temperature and a pressure range of 10~100 kPa are made in a gas chamber using a Bourdon pressure gauge. It is confirmed that air density in a narrow test section can be measured within a 16 % error through absorption signal amplification using a triangular spiral-shaped beam path and a logarithm amplifier.
