A Linearly Polarized Long-Cavity Yb:YAG Laser with a Variable-Reflectivity Output Coupler (반사도 가변형 출력경을 갖는 긴 공진기형 선편광 Yb:YAG 레이저의 출력 특성 연구)

  • We propose a linearly polarized long-cavity Yb:YAG laser with a variable-reflectivity output coupler and investigate its output characteristics. The variable output coupler consists of a polarized beam splitter and a quarter-wave plate. The linearly polarized laser has a long cavity length of about 3.7 m. The slope efficiency of the proposed laser is 19%, and the beam quality ($M^2$) is about 1.2.

A Study on a Compact Coupler between an Optical Fiber and a Grating-assisted Graphene-embedded Silicon Waveguide for a Wavelength-selective Photodetector

  • We proposed an integrated wavelength-selective photodetector based on a grating-assisted contradirectional coupler and a graphene absorption layer for a coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) communication system. The center wavelength of the absorption spectrum of the proposed device can be tuned simply by changing the period of the grating, and the proposed device structure is suitable to forming a cascaded structure. Therefore, an array of the proposed device of different grating periods can be used for simultaneous wavelength demultiplexing and signal detection in a CWDM communication system. Our theoretical study showed that the designed device with a grating length of $500{\mu}m$ could have an absorption of 95.1%, an insertion loss of 0.2 dB, and a 3 dB bandwidth of 7.5 nm, resulting in a -14 dB crosstalk to adjacent CWDM channels. We believe that the proposed device array can provide a compact and economic solution to receiver implementation in the CWDM system by combining functions of wavelength demultiplexing and signal detection.

A Study on the Structural Standard of the Tube and Coupler Scaffold (단관비계의 구조규격에 관한 연구)

  • This study is conducted to establish the structural standard of tube and coupler scaffold which is suitable for our present stuation through the comparison analysis for domestic and foreign standards as well as measurement of field survey. The results of this study are as follows : 1) The load is classified by three categories, light-duty(equal and lower than 150kg/m$^2$), medium-duty(150-250 kg/m$^2$), heavy-duty(250-350kg/m$^2$), and the equivalent horizontal length of side posts is each, 1.5-1.8m, 1.2-1.5m, equal and lower than 1.2m, and the equivalent horizontal length between front and rear posts is each 1.2-1.5m, 0.9-1.2m, equal and lower thatn 0.9m, in accordance with the load classification. 2) The height between upper and lower runner is equal and lower than 1.5m, and the brace across the width of scaffold should be installed within 15m in horizontal direction at 45 degree angle. 3) The entire scaffold should be securely tied to the wall of permanent structure with uslng anchor and bolt at intervals not to exceed 6m in case of non-connection and 4.5m in case of connection in both horizontal and vertical direction. 4) The post should be installed on the sound foundation tied to lumber footing with using base plate, and standard platform plank should be produced in the factory and widely used in the construction field.

CPW Directional Couplers with Enhanced Directivity Via Center-Elimination of Backed Conductor (Backed Conductor의 Center-Elimination을 통한 향상된 방향성을 갖는 CPW 방향성 결합기의 설계)

  • In this paper, we demonstrate that the directivity of the CPW(Coplanar Waveguide) directional coupler with finite-extent backed conductor is enhanced by eliminating center region of backed conductor appropriately. If the backed conductor is removed at center region of couplers, the couplers have two backed conductors. If effective odd mode dielectric constant is decreased at center region, the electrical length for odd mode is changed and phase velocity is same at the directional couplers. Hence, directivity is improved. The eliminated length is solved by an odd and even mode analysis. The designed moderate CPW directional coupler with the proposed compensation structure has excellent directivity and matching characteristic at center frequency in simulation and measurement.

  • This paper proposes a wavelength sensor based on the optical directional coupler. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) is used in analysis of the field intensity of tile light propagating thorough the structure. The device with tile width of 0.4 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and the thickness of 0.4 $\mu\textrm{m}$, which corresponding with the coupling length of 40$\mu\textrm{m}$, would provide tile linear relationship between the coupling efficiency against the wavelength. The device can sense the wavelength in a range between 1.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 1.6$\mu\textrm{m}$, with continuous resolution. The wide wavelength could be also done be paralleling th light to a number of wavelength-sensing modules with particularly required bands. Therefore, it could be employed as the wavelength sensing for most optical communications, optoelectronics, laser applications and etc.

  • Optical fiber sensor is a subject which has been attracted considerable attention in recent years. Detection of sound pressure with optical fibers positioned in the arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is presented in this paper. A fiber length of the order of 150m is wounded is made by hollow cylinder type. To increase the sound signal 3${\times}3$ directional coupler is used. Fiber optic hydrophone is the underwater tank with 2kHz sound source. Finally, it is shown that the fiber optic hydeophone can stably detec 2kHz sound.

  • Y-branch directional coupler optica1 switches with two different coupling lengths are fabricated on z-cut LiNbO3 and tested at r = 1.3 rm. The normal mode and coupled mode theories are utilized to calculate device coupling length and switching voltage. Simulation of the beam propagation method (BPM) is also performed to confirm the device coupling lengths. For dc operation, experimental results are in good agreement with the modee theories expectation.

  • We have fabricated the diffractive optical head(DOH) for optical pick up, which one adaptable to a optical recoding information storage. DOH consists of a focusing grating coupler(FGC) and a solid immersion Jens(SIL). FGC is device that the light converge into a focus by surface lattice. FGC have been studied as a potential application of pick up head for the information storage. In this study, FGC was designed and fabricated to make focus near to possible diffraction limit. We also fabricated recording head combined with SIL. The focus was measured in the range of $1.1{\mu}m$ as near to possible diffraction limit in the FGC having a focusing length of $600{\mu}m$ and a lattice area of 500 * $500{\mu}m$.

  • In this paper, we investigated the optical coupling characteristics for $K^{+}$ ion-exchanged diffused channel waveguide by using coupled-mode equations. In this case, the optical-power-dividing was observed at the waveguide-type optical coupler with 3[$\mu\textrm{m}$] line-width and, 6[$\mu\textrm{m}$] separation between channel waveguides in which interaction lengths were 1 and 3[mm], respectively, On the basis of that we deformed simulation for $Ag^{+}$ ion-exchanged diffused channel waveguide. As a result of simulation, the optical-power-dividing was shown at the waveguide-type optical coupler wish 3[$\mu\textrm{m}$] line-width, 6[$\mu\textrm{m}$] separation between channel waveguides and 0.11[mm] interaction length.

  • This study presents parametric studies for design of a tilting mechanism to be used in 180km/h tilting train. The tilling mechanism is composed of 4 links, a lilting bolster old an electro-mechanical actuator. The movements of the tiling center, CG of the train body, coupler center and tilting actuator along variation of upper and lower span length have been verified by the kinematic analysis. Moreover, the inclination angle and the stroke of the tilting actuator according to the variation of the tilting angle from +8 degrees to -8 degrees have been investigated. From this study, the relation between the movements of the CG of the train body, coupler center and tilting actuator and the height of the tilting center could be evaluated.
