  • This paper presents one of the methods for design to reduce the noise and vibration of 200kW motor for electric propulsion ship. One of the important factors affecting vibration of the motor is the resonance. The natural frequency and natural mode of the 200kW motor is analyzed by using FEM tool and impact test equipment to avoid the resonance. Also, compare FEM result with impact test result to make a reliable FE model of 200kW motor. In order to find out the effect of the noise and vibration of the motor by electromagnetic excitation force, conduct electromagnetic-structure coupled analysis. These characteristics are much useful to design 200kW motor for electric propulsion ship.

  • An analytical method for the free vibration of a flexible rectangular plate in contact with water is developed by the Rayleigh.Ritz method. The plate clamped along the edges is partially contacted with water at both sides. It is assumed that the water bounded by rigid walls is incompressible and inviscid. The wet mode shape of the plate is assumed as a combination of the dry mode shapes of a clamped beam. The liquid motion is described by using the liquid displacement potential and determined by using the compatibility conditions along the liquid interface with the plate. Minimizing the Rayleigh quotient based on the energy conservation gives an eigenvalue problem. It is found that the theoretical results can predict excellently the fluid.coupled natural frequencies comparing with the finite element analysis result.

  • An analytical study is presented on the hydroelastic vibration of two rectangular identical plates coupled with a bounded fluid by using the finite Fourier series expansion method. It is observed that the two contrastive modes, the so called the out-of-phase and in-phase modes appear. The proposed analytical method is verified by observing a good agreement to three dimensional finite element analysis results. All natural frequency of the in-phase modes can be predicted well by the combination of the dry beam modes. The theoretical prediction for the out-of-phase mode can be improved by using the polynomial functions satisfying the plate boundary conditions and fluid volume conservation instead of using dry beam modes.

  • This study deals with the free vibration of a circular plate in contact with a fluid; submerged in fluid, beneath fluid or on fluid. An analytical method based on the finite Fourier-Bessel series expansion and Rayleigh-Ritz method is suggested. The proposed method is verified by the finite element analysis using commercial program with a good accuracy. The normalized natural frequencies are obtained in order to estimate the relative added mass effect of fluid on each vibration mode of the plate. Also, the location of plate coupled with fluid and the cases of free and bounded fluid surface are studied for the effect on the vibration characteristics.

  • The channel type structure which has large openings is frail with respect to torsional strength, and the horizontal-torsional motion is highly coupled, because of the large difference between the centroil and the shear center. Also, a discontinuous boundary phase is came from tansition section between the opened section and the closed section. To analyze the Bending- Torsional coupled mode parameters for the channel type structure, the Transfer Matrix Method was used. Comparing the result of F.D.M.T.M.M yields good results in relatively low frequency region.

  • The vibration of the hard disk drive (HDD) systems, which comprises flexible disks, flexible shafts, bearings, and base structures, are analyzed by a finite element method (FEM) to cope with complicated coupling effects between them. The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the uncoupled, axial and bending coupled vibrations are calculated. Modal testing of the HDD systems is performed to validate the finite element analysis (FEA) results. Good agreement was obtained between the computed and experimental results. Sizing design sensitivity analysis (DSA) of the system was performed with the thickness of base structure and bearing stiffness as design variables. The DSA results tell how can I increase or decrease eigenvalue of the system effectively.

  • The squeal propensity of an automotive disc brake system is studied in the theoretical and computational manner. The rotating disc is in contact with two stationary pads and the nonlinear friction is engaged on the contact surface. The friction-coupled equations of motion are derived in the finite element(FE) of the actual brake disc and pad. From the general definition of friction force, the rotation and in-plane mode effects can be included properly in the brake squeal model. The eigenvalue sensitivity analysis and the mode shape visualization at squeal frequencies are also conducted for the detailed investigation. It is found that the squeal propensity is strongly influenced by rotation effect and the in-plane mode can be involved in squeal generation.

  • If heave motion in the platform causes horizontal parametric vibration of a Compliant Vertical Access Riser (CVAR), the riser may become unstable. A combination of riser parameters lies in the unstable region aggravates vibrational damage to the riser. Change of axial tensile stress in the riser combined with its natural frequency and mode shape change results in mode coupling. In accordance with the state transition matrices of the riser in the coupled and uncoupled states, the stable and unstable regions were obtained by Floquet theory, and the vibration response under different conditions was obtained. The parametric excitation of the CVAR is shown to occur mainly in first-order unstable regions. Mode coupling may cause parametric excitation in the least stable regions. Damping reduces the extent of unstable regions to a certain extent.

  • Modal identification based on ambient vibration data has attracted extensive attention in the past few decades. Since the excitation for ambient vibration tests is mainly from the environmental effects such as wind and traffic loading and no artificial excitation is applied, the signal to noise (s/n) ratio of the data acquired plays an important role in mode identifiability. Under ambient vibration conditions, certain modes may not be identifiable due to a low s/n ratio. This paper presents a study on the mode identifiability of an instrumented cable-stayed bridge with the use of acceleration response data measured by a long-term structural health monitoring system. A recently developed fast Bayesian FFT method is utilized to perform output-only modal identification. In addition to identifying the most probable values (MPVs) of modal parameters, the associated posterior uncertainties can be obtained by this method. Likewise, the power spectral density of modal force can be identified, and thus it is possible to obtain the modal s/n ratio. This provides an efficient way to investigate the mode identifiability. Three groups of data are utilized in this study: the first one is 10 data sets including six collected under normal wind conditions and four collected during typhoons; the second one is three data sets with wind speeds of about 7.5 m/s; and the third one is some blind data. The first two groups of data are used to perform ambient modal identification and help to estimate a critical value of the s/n ratio above which the deficient mode is identifiable, while the third group of data is used to perform verification. A couple of fundamental modes are identified, including the ones in the vertical and transverse directions respectively and coupled in both directions. The uncertainty and s/n ratio of the deficient mode are investigated and discussed. A critical value of the modal s/n ratio is suggested to evaluate the mode identifiability of the deficient mode. The work presented in this paper could provide a base for the vibration-based condition assessment in future.
