  • The photoisomerization of the crosslinked and uncrosslinked polymer-pair with azo linkages was studied by the photoinduced birefringence. The amount of photoinduced birefringence of crosslinked polymer system was much smaller than that of uncrosslinked polymer system, even when varying pumping laser power, so the photoisomerization of an azo chromophores could be controlled by crosslinking process. • A coupled model system for Wind Resource Assessment (WRA) was studied. Using a mesoscale meteorological model, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, global-scale data were downscaled to the inner nested grid scale (typically a few kilometers), and then through the coupling Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) mode, FLUENT. High-resolution results (50 m in the horizontal direction; 10 m in the vertical direction below 150 m) of the wind speed distribution data and ultimately refined wind farm information, were obtained. The refined WRF/FLUENT system was then applied to assess the wind resource over complex terrain in the northern Poyang Lake region. The results showed that the approach is viable for the assessment of wind energy.

  • In this paper we introduce the Plasma Physics of Active Galactic Nuclei project, which is an ongoing experiment with Korean VLBI Network (KVN) and KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) to study multi-frequency polarimetric properties on parsec scales of active galaxies. The goal of the project is to improve our understanding of fundamental jet physics, especially evolution of the relativistic outflow coupled with the large-scale magnetic field. We selected six radio-loud AGN as our targets. So far we (i) detected resolved emissions regions at 86 and 129 GHz on VLBI scales, (ii) constructed 2D spectral index maps of the outflows, and (iii) found polarizations at 22 and 43 GHz for a few targets. Here we present spectral index distributions of 3C 120 between 22 and 43 GHz and a linear polarization map of BL Lac at 43 GHz obtained with KVN.

  • In this paper we review recent work in our laboratory on nanocomposite CoSm-based films including CoSm with Cr underlayer (CoSm//Cr), exchange-coupled magnetic films consisting of CoSm and FeCo layers (CoSm/FeCo), and CoSm multilayers with nonmagnetic spacing layers of SmO (CoSm/SmO). The emphasis is on detailed investigations of microstructure and magnetic properties for CoSm//Cr films, exchange-spring effects for CoSm/FeCo films, and interlayer effects for (CoSm/ SmO) multilayers.

  • The presence of hydrogen absorbed by zirconium-based cladding materials during reactor operation can trigger degradation mechanisms and endanger the rod integrity. Ensuring the durability of the rods in extended time-frames like dry storage requires anticipating hydrogen behavior using numerical modeling. In this context, the present paper describes a hydrogen post-processing tool for Falcon - HYPE, a PSI's in-house tool able to calculate hydrogen uptake, transport, thermochemistry, reorientation of hydrides and hydrogen-related failure criteria. The tool extracts all necessary data from a Falcon output file; therefore, it can be considered loosely coupled to Falcon. HYPE has been successfully validated against experimental data and applied to reactor operation and interim storage scenarios to present its capabilities.

  • Ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) heating system is an important auxiliary heating method in the experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). In EAST, several megawatts of power are transmitted with coaxial transmission lines and coupled to the plasma. For the long pulse and high power operation of the ICRF waves heating system, it is very important to effectively control the power and initial phase of the ICRF signals. In this paper, a power and phase feedback control system is described based on field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices, which can realize complicated algorithms with the advantages of fast running and high reliability. The transmitted power and antenna phase are measured by a power and phase detector and digitized. The power and phase feedback control algorithms is designed to achieve the target power and antenna phase. The power feedback control system was tested on a dummy load and during plasma experiments. Test results confirm that the feedback control system can precisely control ICRF power and antenna phase and is robust during plasma variations.

  • plasma group velocities of neon with oxygen admixture (ug) are obtained by intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) camera images at fixed gate width time of 5 ns. The propagation velocities outside interelectrode region are in the order of 104 m/s.The plasma ambipolar diffusion velocities are calculated to be in the order of 102 m/s. Plasma jet is generated by all fixed sinusoidal power supply, total gas flow and repetition frequency at 3 kV, 800 sccm and 40 kHz, respectively. The amount of oxygen admixture is varied from 0 to 2.75 %. By employing one dimensional convective wave packet model, the electron temperatures in non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma jet are estimated to be in a range from 1.65 to 1.95 eV.

The propagation velocities in upstream and downstream region are in the order of 104-105 m/s. The plasma ambipolar diffusion velocities are calculated to be in the order of 101-102 m/s. Plasma jet is generated by sinusoidal power supply in varying voltages from 1 to 4 kV at repetition frequency of 40 kHz.
