  • Generally, there is no sorting algorithm much faster than O(nlogn). The quicksort has a best performance O(nlogn) in best and average-case, and $O(n^2)$ in worst-case. This paper suggests virtual radix counting bucket sort such that counting the frequency of numbers in each radix digit, and moves the arbitrary number to proper virtual bucket in the array, and divides the array into radix digit numbers virtually. Also, this algorithm moves the data to proper location within an array for using the minimum auxiliary memory. This algorithm performs k-times such that the number of k digits in given data and the time complexity is O(n). Therefore, this algorithm has a O(kn) time complexity.

  • In this paper, an ARS-EKF based motion counting algorithm for repetitive exercises such as calisthenics is proposed using a smartwatch. Raw sensor signals from accelerometers and gyroscopes are widely used for conventional smartwatch counting algorithms based on pattern recognition. However, generated features from raw data are not intuitive to reflect the movement of motions. The proposed motion counter algorithm is composed of navigation based feature generation and counting with error correction. The candidate features for each activity are velocity and attitude calculated through an ARS-EKF algorithm. In order to select those features which reveal the characteristics of each motion, an exercise frame from the initial sensor frame is introduced. Counting processes are basically based on the zero crossing method, and misdetected counts are eliminated via simple classification algorithms considering the frequency of the counted motions. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm efficiently and accurately counts the number of exercises.

  • The electrode wear in micro-EDM significantly deteriorates the machining accuracy. In this regard, electrode wear needs to be compensated in-process to improve the product quality. Therefore, there are substantial amount of research about electrode wear. In this study a control method for micro-EDM using discharge pulse counting is proposed. The method is based on the assumption that the removed workpiece volume is proportional to the number of discharge pulses, which is verified from experimental results analyzing geometrically machined volume according to various number of discharges. Especially, the method has an advantage that electrode wear does not need to be concerned. The proposed method is implemented to an actual micro-EDM system using high speed data acquisition board, simple counting algorithm with 3 axis motion system. As a result, it is demonstrated that the volume of hole machined by EDM drilling can be accurately estimated using the number of discharge pulses. In EDM milling process a micro groove without depth variation caused by electrode wear could be machined using the developed control method. Consequently, it is shown that machining accuracy in drilling and milling processes can be improved by using process control based on the number of discharge pulses.

  • A camera is mounted vertically downwards viewing the people heads from the top. This configuration is successful in people counting technique especially when only a few isolated people pass through a counting region in a non-crowded situation. Thus, this paper describes object counting which detects and count moving people using mixture of gaussian and motion vector. This method is intended to estimates the number of people in outdoor environment. This method use single gaussian background modeling which is more robust an noise and has adaptiveness. The experimental results that is based on mixture of gaussian and motion vector is also helpful to design intelligent surveillance.

  • A single molecule detection system, which consists of confocal fluorescence microscope and single photon counter, has been used to observe the dye concentration dependence of photon counting rate. With increasing concentration, a saturation effect of counting is observed and demonstrated on the basis of the dead time of photon detector. The equations presented here show the relations between the counting rate and some parameters such as probe volume, quantum efficiency of detector, and fluorescence photon number entered onto detector. The signal-to-noise ratio is also discussed briefly.

  • This paper proposes a low-cost method for counting people based on blob detection and blob tracking. Here background subtraction is used to detected blob and then the blob is classified with its width and height to specify that the blob is a person. In this system we first define the area of entry and exit point in the video frame. The counting of people starts when midpoint of the people blob crosses the defined point. Finally, total number of people entry and exit from the place is displayed. Experiment result of this proposed system has high accuracy in real-time performance.

  • In this paper, we propose a new three-dimensional (3D) photon-counting integral imaging reconstruction method using a merging reconstruction process and maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). The conventional 3D photon-counting reconstruction method extracts photons from elemental images using a Poisson random process and estimates the scene using statistical methods such as MLE. However, it can reduce the photon levels because of an average overlapping calculation. Thus, it may not visualize 3D objects in severely low light environments. In addition, it may not generate high-quality reconstructed 3D images when the number of elemental images is insufficient. To solve these problems, we propose a new 3D photon-counting merging reconstruction method using MLE. It can visualize 3D objects without photon-level loss through a proposed overlapping calculation during the reconstruction process. We confirmed the image quality of our proposed method by performing optical experiments.

  • Particle number portable emission measurement system (PN-PEMS) is an instrument for measuring number concentration of automobile exhaust. The principle of some pre-existing commercial PN-PEMS is to charge particles and display the number of particles by measuring current. However, this method has some problems for measuring exhaust. In this study, to solve these issues, we have developed a single particle counting PN-PEMS based condensation particle counter (CPC). The PN-PEMS based CPC does not affect driving conditions and it is convenient for mobile because the instrument is small and light in structure. We evaluated counting efficiency of PN-PEMS based CPC by using electrostatic method (electrometer and Faraday cup).

  • Precise counting of cell number stands in important position within clinical and research laboratories. Conventional methods such as hemocytometer, migration/invasion assay, or automated cell counters have limited in analytical time, cost, and accuracy., which needs an alternative way with time-efficient in-situ approach to broaden the application avenue. Here, we present simple coding-based cell counting method using image analysis tool, freely available image software (ImageJ). Firstly, we encapsulated RFP-expressing bacteria in a droplet using microfluidic device and automatically performed fluorescence image-based analysis for the quantification of cell numbers. Also, time-lapse images were captured for tracking the change of cell numbers in a droplet containing different concentrations of antibiotics. This study confirms that our approach is approximately 15 times faster and provides more accurate number of cells in a droplet than the external analysis program method. We envision that it can be used to the development of high-throughput image-based cell counting analysis.
