An efficient approach to structural static reanalysis with added support constraints

  • Structural reanalysis is frequently used to reduce the computational cost during the process of design or optimization. The supports can be regarded as the design variables in various types of structural optimization problems. The location, number, and type of supports may be varied in order to yield a more effective design. The paper is focused on structural static reanalysis problem with added supports where some node displacements along axes of the global coordinate system are specified. A new approach is proposed and exact solutions can be provided by the approach. Thus, it belongs to the direct reanalysis methods. The information from the initial analysis has been fully exploited. Numerical examples show that the exact results can be achieved and the computational time can be significantly reduced by the proposed method.

  • The computational environment in which engineers perform their designs has been rapidly evolved from coarse serial machines to massively parallel machines. Although the recent development of high-performance computers are available for a number of years, only limited successful applications of the new computational environments in computational structural engineering field has been reported due to its limited availability and large cost associated with high-performance computing. As a new computational model for high-performance engineering computing without cost and availability problems, parallel structural analysis models for large scale structures on a network of personal computers (PCs) are presented in this paper. In structural analysis solving routine for the linear system of equations is the most time consuming part. Thus, the focus is on the development of efficient preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) solvers on the proposed computational model. Two parallel PCG solvers, PPCG-I and PPCG-II, are developed and applied to analysis of large scale space truss structures.

Cost Analysis of the Structural Work of Green Frame

  • The adoption of Green Frame is expected to provide economic benefits, since construction costs are reduced by the in-situ production of precast concrete column and beam. The cost reduction can ultimately be realized by saving transportation costs and the overhead and profit of PC plants. The cost structure of Green Frame, which is built up using composite precast concrete members, is similar to that of a bearing-wall structure, but the difference in construction process has resulted in some cost differences for a few items. In particular, production and installation is the principal work involved in Green Frame made by precast concrete members, while form and concrete work is the principal work for a bearing-wall structure. As such, the rental time and fee for a tower crane should be compared through time analysis. To verify reliability, this study focused on developed residential projects to estimate the construction costs. Through this analysis, it was found that the costs of Green Frame were 1.57% lower than the costs of bearing-wall structure. The results of this study will help in the development of a management plan for the structural work of Green Frame.

Life-cycle-cost optimization for the wind load design of tall buildings equipped with TMDs

  • The paper presents a Life-Cycle Cost-based optimization framework for wind-excited tall buildings equipped with Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs). The objective is to minimize the Life-Cycle Cost that comprises initial costs of the structure, the control system and costs related to repair, maintenance and downtime over the building's lifetime. The integrated optimization of structural sections and mass ratio of the TMDs is carried out, leading to a set of Pareto optimal solutions. The main advantage of the proposed methodology is that, differently from the traditional optimal design approach, it allows to perform the unified design of both the structure and the control system in a Life Cycle Cost Analysis framework. The procedure quantifies wind-induced losses, related to structural and nonstructural damage, considering the stochastic nature of the loads (wind velocity and direction), the specificity of the structural modeling (e.g., non-shear-type vibration modes and torsional effects) and the presence of the TMDs. Both serviceability and ultimate limit states related to the structure and the TMDs' damage are adopted for the computation of repair costs. The application to a case study tall building allows to demonstrate the efficiency of the procedure for the integrated design of the structure and the control system.

Structural Assessment of the Optimal Section Shape of FRP Based Stiffeners (FRP 보강재의 최적 단면 형상 결정 및 평가에 관한 연구)

  • This paper deals with the structural assessment of metallic and non-metallic stiffened/monocoque plated marine structures under a lateral pressure load to identify appropriate combination of material and section configuration, especially at the preliminary marine structural design stage. A generic rectangular plated structure is exemplified from the metallic superstructure of a marine vessel and its structural topology is varied for the structural assessment. In total 13 different structural topologies are proposed and assessed using appropriate elastic solutions in conjunction with a set of stress and deflection limits obtained from practice. The geometry dimensions and weights of the structural topologies are calculated, and subsequently, the costs of the materials used in the structural topologies are reviewed to discuss the cost-effectiveness of the materials. Finally, conclusions are made with the aim of suggesting suitable structural topology for the marine structural member considered in this paper.

  • In this study, the genetic algorithm based optimal structural design method is proposed. The objective functions are to minimize the cost and $CO_2$ emissions, simultaneously. The cost and $CO_2$ emissions are calculated based on the cross-sectional dimensions, length, material strength, and reinforcement ratio of beam and column members. Thus, the cost and $CO_2$ emissions are evaluated by using the amounts of concrete and reinforcement used to construct a building. In this study, the cost and $CO_2$ emissions calculated at the phases of material transportation, construction, and building operation are excluded. The constraint conditions on the strength of beam and column members and the inter-story drift ratio are considered. The linear static analysis by using OpenSees is automatically conducted in the proposed method. The genetic algorithm is employed to solve the formulated problem. The proposed method is validated by applying it to the 4-story reinforced concrete moment frame example.

  • This study is intended to propose a systematic procedure for the development of the conditional assessment based on the safety of structures and the cost effective performance criteria for designing and upgrading of bridge structures. As a result, a set of cost function models for a life cycle cost analysis of bridge structures is proposed and thus the expected total life cycle costs (ETLCC) including initial (design, testing and construction) costs and direct/indirect damage costs considering repair and replacement costs, human losses and property damage costs, road user costs, and indirect regional economic losses costs. Also, the optimum safety indices are presented based on the expected total cost minimization function using only three parameters of the failure cost to the initial cost (${\tau}$), the extent of increased initial cost by improvement of safety (${\nu}$) and the order of an initial cost function (n). Through the enough numerical invetigations, we can positively conclude that the proposed optimum design procedure for bridge structures based on the ETLCC will lead to more rational, economical and safer design.

Optimum design of steel frame structures considering construction cost and seismic damage

  • Minimizing construction cost and reducing seismic damage are two conflicting objectives in the design of any new structure. In the present work, we try to develop a framework in order to solve the optimum performance-based design problem considering the construction cost and the seismic damage of steel moment-frame structures. The Park-Ang damage index is selected as the seismic damage measure because it is one of the most realistic measures of structural damage. The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is employed as the optimization algorithm to search the Pareto optimal solutions. To improve the time efficiency of the proposed framework, three simplifying strategies are adopted: first, simplified nonlinear modeling investigating minimum level of structural modeling sophistication; second, fitness approximation decreasing the number of fitness function evaluations; third, wavelet decomposition of earthquake record decreasing the number of acceleration points involved in time-history loading. The constraints of the optimization problem are considered in accordance with Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) recommended seismic design specifications. The results from numerical application of the proposed framework demonstrate the efficiency of the framework in solving the present multi-objective optimization problem.

  • The Korea railroad industry has experienced the operating deficit annually since 1980. And the ridership has been reduced since 1990. Therefore, a structural reform of the Korea railroad industry conducted at 2003. Basic principles of their structural reform are no differences among the Korea and advanced counties. But different outcomes depending on each country situation appears. These cost functions appear the existence of all economic of scale. And when increase the average transport distance annually, the average cost reduce annually. The results of structural reform by comparing before and after, the average cost was lower than previously. The Structural reform and the operation of the KTX, the two effects at the same time, the synergy effect has occurred. Because of the synergy effect, the performance is estimated to be larger. Due to the effective operation of structural reform that could reduce costs.

  • Recently Life Cycle Cost Analysis for civil infrastructures such as pavements, bridges, and dams has been emphasized However, so far, there are few systems available for life cycle cost analysis of bridges at design stage. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to develop a user-friendly life-cycle cost analysis system for LCC-effective optimal design decision making at design stage. The program is based on the proposed LCC model, formulation, analysis modules and systematic procedure that suit Korean construction conditions. It is expected that the developed system can be effectively utilized for more LCC-effective design of bridges. It is applied to an actual bridge design project in order to demonstrate its effectiveness and applicability.
