HectoMAP is a dense redshift survey of red galaxies covering a 53 square degree strip of the northern sky, and Horizon Run 4 is one of the densest and largest cosmological simulations based on the standard Lambda cold dark matter model. We use HectoMAP and Horizon Run 4 to compare the physical properties of observed large-scale structures with simulated ones in the redshift range 0.22
Shock waves have been observed in the outskirts of galaxy clusters. They are commonly interpreted as being driven by mergers of sub-clumps, so are called "merger shocks". We here report a study of the properties of merger shocks in merging galaxy clusters with cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. As a representative case, we describe the case where sub-clusters with mass ratio ~ 2 go through an almost head-on, binary-like merger. Because of the turbulent nature of hierarchical clustering, shock surfaces are not uniform, but composed of parts with different Mach numbers. As merger shocks expand from the core to the outskirts, the average Mach number, < $M_s$ >, increases. The shocks propagating along the merger axis could be observed as X-ray shocks and/or radio relics. The kinetic energy through the shocks peaks at ~ 1 Gyr after shock launching, or at ~ 1 - 2 Mpc from the core. The most energetic shocks are found to have the kinetic-energy weighted Mach number, < $M_s$ > $_{\phi}{\simeq}2-3$, and the CR-energy weighted Mach number, < $M_s$ > $_{CR}{\simeq}3-4$. We then discuss the observational implications of our results.
Reionisation in the early Universe is likely driven by dwarf galaxies. Using cosmological RHD simulations, we study star formation and the escape of Lyman continuum (LyC) photons from mini-haloes with Mhalo<108Msun. We find that feedback reduces star formation very efficiently in mini-haloes, resulting in the stellar mass consistent with the empirical stellar mass-to-halo mass relation derived in the local Universe. Because star formation is stochastic and dominated by a few gas clumps, the escape fraction in mini-haloes is generally determined by photo-ionization, rather than supernova explosions. We find that the photon number-weighted mean escape fraction in mini-haloes is higher (20-40%) than that in atomic-cooling haloes. Despite their high escape fractions, LyC photons from mini-haloes are of minor importance for reionization due to inefficient star formation. We confirm previous claims that stars in atomic-cooling haloes with masses $10^8M_{sun}$$10^{11}M_{sun}$ are likely to be the most important source of reionization.
We analyze the halo and galaxy catalogs from the Millennium simulations at redshifts z=0, 0.5, 1 to determine the alignment profiles of cluster galaxies in terms of the matter density correlation coefficient and discuss a cosmological implication our result has for breaking parameter degeneracies. For each selected cluster, we measure the alignment between the major axes of the pseudo inertia tensors from all satellites within cluster's virial radius and from only those satellites within some smaller radius. Then we average the measured values over the similar-mass sample to determine the cluster galaxy alignment profile as a function of top-hat scale difference at each redshift. It is shown that the alignment profile of cluster galaxies is well approximated by a power-law of the nonlinear density correlation coefficient that is independent of the power spectrum normalization and bias factor. The alignment profile of cluster galaxies is found to have higher amplitude and lower power-law index when averaged over the larger-mass sample and to have rather weak redshift-dependence. This result is consistent with the picture that the satellite galaxies retain the memory of the external tidal fields right after merging and infalling into the clusters but they gradually lose the initial alignment tendency as the cluster's relaxation proceeds. Demonstrating that the nonlinear density correlation coefficient varies sensitively with the density parameter and neutrino mass fraction, we discuss a potential power of the cluster galaxy alignment profile as an independent probe of cosmology.
Spin distribution of dark matter halos in a cosmological N-body simulation is well fitted by a log-normal distribution, but the origin of the log-normal like shape is still unknown. To understand the evolution of spin and the origin of spin distribution, we have studied the change of the angular momentum of simulated halos through their merging histories. First, we traced merging histories of the dark matter halos and measured the probability distribution of the angular momentum changes from a series of simulations. We were able to fit the angular momentum changes with the Gaussian distribution in spaces of M, spin, ${\Delta}M$. Using the simulated merging trees and the distribution of angular momentum changes during the merging events, we can recover the spin distribution of halos over the various mass scales.

We present evidence of the bar driven secular evolution on disks from z~0.8 to z~0.01. Using $3.6{\mu}m$ images of nearby galaxies from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G) and images from the Cosmological Evolution Survey (COSMOS), we find that barred galaxies show a light deficit in the disk surrounding the bar within the bar radius. We quantify this light deficit and find that galaxies with a stronger bar (longer, higher Bar/T) show a more pronounced light deficit. We examine snapshots from N-body simulations and confirm that as a barred galaxy evolves, the bar becomes longer and the light deficit becomes more pronounced. Theoretical studies have predicted that bars evolve by capturing nearby disk stars and employing them to make the bar more elongated and stronger. Therefore the light deficit in the disk is likely produced by bars, and thus bars play a major role in shaping their host galaxies, redistributing not only the gaseous but also the stellar mass within galaxies, with important consequences to their subsequent evolution.
We have studied how the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF) affects the propagation of super-GZK iron nuclei that originate from extragalactic sources within the local GZK sphere. Toward this end, we set up hypothetical sources of ultra-high-energy cosmic-rays (UHECRs), virtual observers, and the magnetized cosmic web in a model universe constructed from cosmological structure formation simulations. We then arranged a set of reference objects at high density region to represent astronomical objects formed in the large scale structure (LSS). With our model IGMF, the paths of UHE iron nuclei are deflected on average by about 70 degrees, which might indicate a nearly isotropic distribution of arrival directions. However, the separation angle between the arrival directions and the nearest reference object on the LSS is only ~6 degrees, which is twice the mean distance to the nearest neighbors among the reference objects. This means that the positional correlation of observed UHE iron events with their true sources would be erased by the IGMF, but the correlation with the LSS itself is to be sustained. We discuss implications of our findings for correlations studies of real UHECR events.
We present a statistical analysis on the spin-orbit alignment of dark matter halo pairs in cosmological simulations. The alignment is defined as the angular concurrence between the halo spin vector (${\vec{S}}$) and the orbital angular momentum vector (${\vec{L}}$) of the major companion. We identify interacting halo pairs with the mass ratios from 1:1 to 1:3, with the halo masses of 10.8 < $Log(M_{halo}/M_{sun}$) < 13.0, and with the separations smaller than a sum of their virial radii ($R_{12}<R_{1,vir}+R_{2,vir}$). Based on the total energy ($E_{12}$), the pairs are classified into flybys ($E_{12}$ > 0) and mergers ($E_{12}{\leq}0$). By measuring the angle (${\theta}_{SL}$) between ${\vec{S}}$ and ${\vec{L}}$, we confirm a strong spin-orbit alignment signal such that the halo spin is preferentially aligned with the orbital angular momentum of the major companion. We find that the signal of the spin-orbit alignment for the flyby is weaker than that for the merger. We also find an unexpected excess signal of the spin-orbit alignment at $cos{\theta}_{SL}{\sim}0.25$. Both the strength of the spin-orbit alignment and the degree of the excess depend only on the environment. We conclude that the halo spin is determined by the accretion in a preferred direction set by the ambient environment.
We constrain cosmological parameters by combining three different power spectra measured from galaxy clustering, galaxy-galaxy lensing, and cosmic shear using the Deep Lens Survey (DLS). Two lens bins (centered at z~0.27 and 0.54) and two source bins (centered at z~0.64, and 1.1) containing more than one million galaxies are selected to measure the power spectra. We re-calibrate the initial photo-z estimation of the lens bins by matching with SHELS and PRIMUS and confirm its fidelity by measuring a cross-correlation between the bins. We also check the reliability of the lensing signals through the null tests, lens-source flipping and cross shear measurement. Residual systematic errors from photometric redshift and shear calibration uncertainties are marginalized over in the nested sampling during our parameter constraint process. For the flat LCDM model, we determine S_8=sigma_8(Omega_m/0.3)^0.5=0.832+-0.028, which is in great agreement with the Planck data. We also verify that the two independent constraints from the cosmic shear and the galaxy clustering+galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements are consistent with each other. To address baryonic feedback effects on small scales, we marginalize over a baryonic feedback parameter, which we are able to constrain with the DLS data alone and more tightly when combined with Planck data. The constrained value hints at the possibility that the AGN feedback in the current OWLS simulations might not be strong enough.
