  • To assess the source of oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and clam (Ruditapes phillippinarum), phytoplankton community structures in the water column and sediment, including the composition of phytoplankton in oyster and clam digestive organs were investigated bimonthly from December 2006 to June 2007 in the Taeahn coastal waters. During the sampling period, water temperature and salinity varied from 7 to 23$^{\circ}C$ and 34 to 35 PSU, respectively. Total phytoplankton abundances at St. O in the water column were higher than those at St. J, whereas total phytoplankton abundances at St. O in the sediment were lower. In addition, total phytoplankton abundances in the water column and sediment were observed to be relatively higher in February and April 2007. Among the diatoms, Paralia sulcata was always dominant, accounting for 41$\sim$87% of total phytoplankton, except St. J for February 2007 during the sampling period. The following phytoplankton compositions observed in the digestive organs of oyster and clam appeared: diatoms such as genus Paralia, Navicula, Melosira and Coscinodiscus, Silicoflagellate Dictyocha, dinoflagellates Prorocentrum and Dinophysis. Phytoplankton compositions observed in the digestive organs of oyster and clam corresponded relatively well with the species composition appeared in the water column and sediments of each season. A significant relationship was found between individual weight of oyster or clam and their digestive organs weight, while there was not a close correlation with total phytoplankton amount. We suggest that P. sulcata always dominated as one of important the food source of oyster and clam in the marine ranching ground of Taeahn coastal waters.

  • A total of 64 species belonging to 23 genera of diatom fossils are identified from the Core GC 98-06 in the southern Drake Passage, Antarctica. The diatom assemblages are dominated by Actinocyclus actinochilus, Coscinodiscus asteromphalus, Eucampia antarctica, Fragilariopsis kerguelensis, Thalassiosira lentiginosa, T. ritscheri and T. anguste-lineata, which are about 73% of the assemblage. Open water species are more abundant than sea ice species in the diatom assemblages of the core. Fragilariopsis. kerguelensis and Thalassiosira lentiginosa are valuable indicators of the habitats. Especially, F. kerguelensis represent the influence of waters from the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Sea ice taxa represents the influence of cold waters from Bransfield Strait Water and melt water from the sea-ice at during warm periods. The reworked diatoms such as Denticulopsis dimopha (Miocene) and D. hustedtii (Pliocene) are occurred with Quaternary species (Actinocyclus actinochilus, Fragilariopsis kerguelensis, Thalassiosira lentiginosa, and T. glacilis). The presence of reworked diatoms indicates the transportation of the older diatoms into the Drake passage from the circumference sediments, due to strong bottom current activity of Antarctic circumpolar deep water.

  • The food selectivity of tethered females of the copepod Calanus helgolandicus was examined by using the colorimetric approach. First, feeding behavior of the copepod did not show any differences between the red-color stained with neutral red and non-stained diets using the diatom Coscinodiscus curvatulus. Then, the copepods were fed a mixtures of two diets, the diatom C. curvatulus, stained with neutral red, and the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium sanguineum for $14\sim60$ minutes of feeding duration. The foregut colors of females were examined using a stereo-microscope and a video monitor. The foreguts of animals fed with a high density of diatoms in mixed diets showed a dark red color, whereas those fed with a high density of dinoflagellate in mixed diets were a dark yellow. The results suggest that this species of copepod may not selectively feed either one of the diets used for this study. Their feeding activity may be more likely related to the density of available prey in their environment. Therefore, this quick and easy colorimetric approach could provide very useful information, like the pre-screening procedure before designing and conducting the time-consuming and complex feeding experiments to understand the feeding ecology of copepods.

  • Monthly observations of phytoplankton and physico-chemical properties of sea water were made from October, 1977 to December, 1977 and from June, 1978 to August, 1978 at four stations in Cheonsu Bay. 141 taxa of phytoplankton(diatoms and dinoflagellates) representing 17 families, 40 genera have been identified in this study, and 11 taxa of the number are found to be new to Korea. Nitzschia longissima, Coscinodiscus occulus-iridis, Biddulphia sinensis, were the major species in the phytoplankton communities of the Bay. Leptocylindrus danicus, which was one of the dominant species in June, 1978, showed a distinct pattern of distribution;in June its abundance varied from 89.05% to 1.67% of total abundance along 4 stations. During summer months phytoplankton standing crops were ranged between 25,492 and 129,459 cells/l and the values of species diversity index (H) varied from 0.648 to 3.597. A brief taxonomic account is given.

  • Based on both field and laboratory experiments, seasonal changes in the species composition and abundance of phytoplankton in the gut contents of the jedo venus clam, Protothaca jedoensis, and its feeding selectivity were investigated. The phytoplankton in the gut contents comprised Bacillariophyceae (diatom), Chlorophyceae, Chrysophyceae, and Dinophyceae, of which the diatoms being the most predominant throughout the year. Although the number of species and the abundance of phytoplankton in the sea water were always more diverse and more abundant than in the gut contents, the relative number and abundance were generally similar in the seawater and in the gut contents. In the laboratory experiments, the relative abundances of Coscinodiscus marginatus and Thalassirosira eccentrica were much more higher in the gut contents than any other algal species, while Paralia sulcata, Skeletonema costatum, and Eucampia zodiacus were abundant in order of cell density in the ambient water. These results suggest that P. jedoensis may feed preferably on single algal cell or smaller chains of algal cells.

  • This study investigated the physio-chemical water quality and the standing crop of the phytoplankton of Dong-stream in Jeollanam-do from May 2010 to Feb 2011. The indicators and the dominant species of phytoplankton were also measured to investigate the water quality of estuary. Nutrients turned out to be eutrophic to hypertrophic in most sites with total nitrogen ranging 1.023~10.743 mg/L and total phosphorous ranging 0.0182~1.6848 mg/L. The site D6 had the highest BOD ranging 0.6~7.5 mg/L. Total of 205 taxa appeared within the research period, Bacillariophyceae being the highest number of taxa. The appeared species were taxa resistant to pollution including Navicula pupula, N. subminuscula, Nitzschia amphibia and N. palea. The downstream is thought to be greatly affected by the ocean water since marine and estuary phytoplankton such as Skeletonema costatum, Coscinodiscus radiatus, Bacteriastrum delicatulum and Eucampia biconcave appeared. Diatom appeared mainly as dominant species including Cymbella minuta, Melosira varians, Gomphonema parvulum, Stephanodiscus hantzschii. As for Stephanodiscus hantzschii, it dominates during fall and winter when the water temperature drops. Diatom showed 50% or higher dominant rate in all seasons at most sites. Most sites turned out to be eutrophic based on the standing crop of cells and chlorophyll a concentration. Total of 15 polluted water indicating taxa including Oscillatoria limosa appeared. From this result, the Dong-stream was considered to be in the eutrophication.

  • Wangdol-cho, located 23 km offshore of Hupo in southwest of East Sea, is underwater rock floor, called to Wangdol-Am or Wangdol-Jam and has three tops as Mat-Jam, Middle-Jam and Set-Jam. The composition, abundance, diversity and community structure were investigated in winter and summer in 2002 around Wangdol-cho. The temperature around the Northwest and Southeast part of Wangdol-cho was influenced by the North Korea Cold Current (NKCC) and East Korea Warm Current (EKWC), respectively. Nutrient and chlorophyll-a concentration were higher at the top of Wangdol-cho than other area. A total of 41 genera and 78 species of phytoplankton were identified. The average cell abundance of phytoplankton in winter and summer were $286{\times}10^3\;cells/m^3,\;432{\times}10^3\;cells/m^3$ respectively. The largest community was Bacillariophyta containing 52 taxa. The dominant species were Lauderia anulata and Coscinodiscus spp. which preferred cold water in winter. In contrast, warm water species such as Rhizosolenia stolterfothii and Ceratium spp. were dominant in summer. The average species diversity index of phytoplankton in winter was higher than that in summer. According to dominant species and standing crops, phytoplankton community resulted in a clear separation. One group was western area, which showed low density, and the other was eastern area, which showed the higher density. The abundance and species composition of phytoplankton. were affected by topological characteristics around Wangdol-cho.

  • A quantitative phytoplankton study in Korean waters was commenced in 1964 as a part of the primary production studies of Koreans seas, and it was continued with the cruises for Cooperative Studies of the Kuroshio(C.S.K) in 1965-1968. Phytoplankton samples were taken by dipping about 500ml of sea water from the surface, and then fixed by ading neutralized formlin. This report deals with the results obtained during 1965-1966. I examined a total of 298 samples of surface phytoplankton collected in the wate neighboring Korea in the above-mentioned period, and detected 147 species of diatoms and 22 species of dinoflagellates. Among them 123 species of diatoms and 18 species of dinoflagellates occured in the Japan Sea region, 133 species of diatoms and 11 species of dinoflagellates occured in the Korea Strait region, and 49 species of diatom and 8 species of dinoflagellates occured in the Yellow Sea region. And thd phytoplankton standing crops are dept in a fair abundance in the Japan Sea area all the year round, and are poor in the Yellow Sea area. The seas surrounding Korea are divided into seven regions by the planktological characteristics; northern and southern parts of the Japan Sea, eastern, western and southern parts of the Korea Strait, southern and northern parts of the Yellow Sea. The representative of the phytoplankton community in each sea region is generalized as follows; northern part of the Japan Sea is dominant with Chaetoceros group, southern part of the Japan Sea is dominant with Chaetoceros group and Skeletonema costaum, eastern part of the Korea Strait is dominant with Chaetoceros group and Pleurosigma sp., southern part of the Korea Strait is dominant with Chaetoceros group and Rizosolenia group, western part of the Korea Strait is most poor in phytoplankton, southern part of the Yellow Sea is dominant with Pleurosigma sp. and Coscinodiscus group, and northern part of the Yellow Sea is dominant with Pleurosigma sp. and Eucampia zoodiacus. Chaetoceros curvisetus, Leptocylindrus danicus, Pleurosigma normanii, Thalassionema nitzschioides, Thalassiothrix flauenfeldii appeared all the year round in the neighboring sea of Korea. There were 24 species (18 species of diatoms and 6 species of dinoflagellates) of the pecuriar phytoplankton in the Japan Sea, 27 species (25 species of diatoms and 2 species of dinoflagellates) of that in the Korea, and 7 species (5 species of diatoms and 2 species of dinoflagellates) of that in the Yellow Sea, respectively.

  • For investigating the activities of algicidal bacteria, the variations of algicidal bacterial population and chlorophyll-a were checked weekly in Chindong Bay, Korea from May to July, 1998. For identifying their killing characteristics, three strains were selected from the isolated algicidal bacteria. The density of algicidal bacteria kept changing in the range of $6.0\times10^1$ to $6.4\times10^5$ cell $\ell^{-1}$. The density flux of algicidal bacteria coincided with that of chlorophyll-a by a week of lag time. Three algicidal bacteria isolated from field strains, H519S5-4, H605S5-15 and H605S5-22, were investigated in nine microalgal species, Heterosigma akashiwo, Chattonella sp. (Raphidlphyceae), Gymnodinium catenatum, Gyrodinium impudicum, Cochlodinium polyklikoides (Dinophyceae), Chaetoceros sp., Coscinodiscus granii, Ditylum brightwellii, Thalassiosira rotula (Bacillariophyceae). Strain H605S5-22 showed a wide algicidal activities over nine microlgae, strain H605S5-15 over H. akashiwo, G. catenatum, T. rotula, Chattonella sp. and strain H519S5-4 over H. akashiwo, Chattonella sp., Chaetoceros sp., G. catenatum. The activities of the three strains were detected by the secretion of algicidal substances. Therefore, it is suggested that the activities of algicidal bacteria have a significant influence over the population dynamics of phytoplankton and get involved with the sharp decrease in red tides in the coastal area.
