  • The present paper describes the effect of dry mixed grinding on kaolinite-aluminum trihydroxide mixture with a planetary ball mill before sintering and its influence on mullite formation during sintering. The size reduction of the mixture is market in the early stage of grinding and the obtained fine particles agglomerate subsequently with an increase of grinding time. The crystal structure of the mixture is collapsed easily into an amorphous one by planetary ball milling, of which amount increases with an increase of grinding time. Only mullite phase except for anatase as an inherent impurity in kaolinite appeared in the sintered body of the mixtures with mixed grinding as relatively lower temperature 1523K, while corundum, cristobalite, and Al-Si spinel phases, besides mullite were formed in the sintered body of the mixture without mixed grinding. Therefore, the mixed grinding treatment is very effective to improve the homogeneous mixing and disp-ersion of the mixture of raw materials on a micro scale and to decrease the thermal decomposition tem-perature by crystal structure change of them so as to obatin direct preparation of mullite with high purity at relatively low temperature.

  • We heat treated pure sapphire samples at $1800^{\circ}C{\sim}100$ hours in BeO-${Al_2}{O_3}$ powder by varying BeO contents of $5{\sim}50\;wt%$ in order to quantify the BeO diffusion enhancement for corundum gem stones. We investigated the heat treated samples with visual evaluation, color coordination analysis, and surface roughness measurement. We confirmed that $Be^{2+}$ ions did not lead to orange color but to dark gray. The lightness in CIE Lab index decreased while surface roughness increased rapidly as BeO contents increased. We propose that BeO yellow color enhancement may be feasible only for $Fe^{3+}$ rich blue sapphires and sub-5% BeO content be appropriate to shorten post re- cutting process.

  • Clayey ores of the Jeonnam province mainly consist of pyrophyllite (monoclinic), kaolinite (1T), and minor amounts of quartz, muscovite, and feldspars. Mineralogical studies revealed that two kinds of clay minerals were mainly produced from the volcanic sediments with similar ages and compositions. Kaolinite deposits sometimes contain neither diaspore nor corundum, but alunites are often found in the upper portions of the kaolin ore bodies. On the other hand, corundum and diaspore are commoner in the pyrophyllite deposits than the kaolin deposits. As ages of rock formations are becoming younger, amounts of pyrophyllite and kaolinite are rather radically decreased, and finally disappeared. But muscovite, quartz, and plagioclase feldspars are inclined to be preserved because of weak alteration. Most of clay ore bodies contain purple tuff beds on the uppermost portion, and silicified beds, tuff, and lapillistone are found in an ascending order in the most of clay quarries. Chemical analyses show that higher contents of $Al_2O_3$ might not necessarily be due to the argillization, since some tuffs contain higher $Al_2O_3$ contents originated from feldspars. $SiO_2$ contents are fairly higher in the silicified beds than in those of adjacent formations, which might have been introduced from the ore bodies. And $K_2O$ contents are obviously lower than those of $Na_2O$ and CaO in the ores and their vicinities. Ignition losses of some of clays represent much higher contents than those of the ordinary ones because of the sporadic presence of alunite, diaspore and corundum which are accompanied with lots of $SO_4$ and $Al_2O_3$ contents. REE (rare earth element) abundances of most of volcanics and clay ores show rather higher LREE (light rare earth elements) contents, and represent small to moderately negative Eu anomalies. Though most of ores ususally show milky white color, fine-grained and well bedded formations which could be easily discernible in the most of outcrop. But more distinct characteristics are desirable where rather massive ore bodies exist. Purple tuffs and silicified beds above the ore bodies would be useful as marker horizons/key beds since they have rather obvious lithology, extension and mineralogy than those of other adjacent formations.

  • We removed the bluish of the natural ruby successfully by vacuum annealing, and measured the color evolution with annealing time and temperature. We varied the anneal temperature and time $800\~1500^{\circ}C$ and $3\~26$ hrs, respectively. The color evolution of rubies with annealing condition was recorded by a digital camera and a color coordination visible spectrometer. We determined the optimum bluish eliminating annealing condition was $1500^{\circ}C-3hr$, which conserving the natural inclusions. We suggest the bluish shrink with diffusion coefficient of $D=(5\times10^{-3}){\exp}(-200.000/RT)[cm^2/s]$. We propose the color of ruby may be determined as the identical red color if the color difference between two samples are less than 1.0, and the color difference nay be an auxiliary standard to evaluate the color of rubies.

  • Verneuil method uses oxyhydrogen flame for its heat source. This method was used to grow corundum monocrystals. Parametersof this method are feeding rate, gas pressure, lowering rate and growth axis. These parameters were examined. Crystals's qualities and shapes are affected by these parameters. Crystals having good qualities and shape were grown under the conditions that feeding rate, 0.2∼0.5g/min, lowering rate, 10∼20mm/hr ; gas pressure, 3∼4psi ; growth axis was shifted 60 degrees from c axis.

  • We model dust around Herbig Ae/Be stars using a radiative transfer model for multiple isothermal circumstellar dust shells to reproduce the multiple broad peaks in their spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Using the opacity functions for various types of dust grains at different temperatures, we calculate the radiative transfer model SEDs for multiple dust shells. For eight sample stars, we compare the model results with the observed SEDs including the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) and AKARI data. We present model parameters for the best fit model SEDs that would be helpful to understand the overall structure of dust envelopes around Herbig Ae/Be stars. We find that at least four separate dust components are required to reproduce the observed SEDs. For all the sample stars, two innermost dust components (a hot component of 1000-1500 K and a warm component of 300-600 K) with amorphous silicate and carbon grains are needed. Crystalline dust grains (corundum, forsterite, olivine, and water ice) are needed for some objects. Some crystalline dust grains exist in cold regions as well as in hot inner shells.

  • Compositionally triphasic boehmite-silica-zirconia composite gels were prepared by a multiphasic sol-gel route. Phase-formation characteristics and densification behavior of the gel compacts were examined with and without $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeding. In the unseeded triphasic gels, both $\alpha$-Al2O3 and mullite crystallize simultaneously at 130$0^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, the $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeding selectively induces the formation of corundum phase ($\alpha$-Al2O3) at a significantly lower temperature (~110$0^{\circ}C$) and facilitates an epitaxial growth of $\alpha$-Al2O3 between 1100~130$0^{\circ}C$. The densification of alumina-mullite-zirconia composite (derived from the triphasic gels) was also enhanced by the $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeding, and this was attributed to the delayed crystallization of mullite in the $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeded gel.

  • The possibility of the sources for the manufacture of mullite-rich refractories from the modified domestic alunite was studied. The modifying method of alunite studied were performed by calcination, wet ballmilling, and washing with water. For synthesis of mullite-rich refractories, the modified alunite with the addition of alumina and Fe2O3 as mineralizer was fired at 1350$^{\circ}$-155$0^{\circ}C$, and the following results were obtained: 1) The suitable firing temperature range was 1450$^{\circ}$-150$0^{\circ}C$, and adequate amounts of Al2O3 and Fe2O3 were below 30% and 3~4%, respectively. 2) Thermal expansion coefficient proportional to heating temperature was about 5$\times$10-6~10$\times$10-6cm/cm.deg. 3) The mineralogical compositions of the sintered specimens were found as mainly mullite and corundum.

  • Dust species in the envelopes around AGB stars would have multiple components rather than a single component. Each dust species may have its own temperature and density structure. We use the radiative transfer code RADMC-3D developed by Dullemond et al. 2011 to model the multi-component dust envelopes around O-rich AGB stars. For reasonable combinations of physical and chemical parameters of the dust envelopes, we use multi-component dust species of silicate, corundum, and water ice. We find that the new model results can explain the observations of O-rich AGB stars better than conventional models.

  • A QM-ISP-4 Planetary Mill was employed to activate mechanically the mixtures of anatase and corundum at room temperature for different times. The milled powder mixtures were then sintered at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The XRD results showed that the milled powder mixtures were completely transformed into $Al_2TiO_5$ after sintering, except the mixtures milled for 5 and 10 hours. The SEM observations showed the typical morphology of rod-like $Al_2TiO_5$ vary in the range: widths from 0.6 to $1.2\;{\mu}m$, and lengths from 3.0 to $6.0\;{\mu}m$. The rod-like $Al_2TiO_5$ formation was attributed to the positive effects caused by the mechanical activation.
