  • Male mice of strain SM were given 128 rads of single whole-body gamma-irradiation of $^{60}Co$, 14 to 16 minutes following a subcutaneous injection of physiological saline or cortisone acetate (1mg/day, for 4 days preirradiation). The serum protein patterns and the level of the total serum proteins were determined at various time intervals after exposure. Total serum protein was determined by Biuret method and serum protein fractions and A/G ratio were determined by paper electrophoresis using Whatman No.1 filter paper and barbital buffer (pH 8.6, ionic strength 0.06). 1. Total body gamma-irradiation caused a rise in the level of the total serum protein at 1 day and in the level of the serum albumin-globulin ratio at 5 days in both cortisone acetate-treated and control groups. 2. Cortisone acetate delayed the total serum protein rise at 5, 10, and 20 days after exposure. 3. Cortisone acetate delayed the A/G ratio rise at 1, 5, and 10 days after exposure. 4. It may be inferred that cortisone greatly reduces the sensitivity of mice to gamma-irradiation on the blood protein, probided that cortisone is given before the exposure.

  • In order to compare the effects of epinephrine, cortisone or insulin on the hepatic storage of triglycerides, the fatty liver was induced in mice by the subcutaneous injection for 30 days of either epinephrine, cortisone or insulin. The morphological characteristics of fatty liver in relation to the inducing agents was observed with the following results. 1. The fatty liver induced by epinephrine or cortisone was characterized by the centrilobular accumulation of triglycerides although the degree of accumulation by epinephrine appeared to be much higher than that by cortisone. 2. The fatty liver produced by insulin, however, was characterized by the infiltration of small-sized lipid droplets scattering all over the hepatic lobules.

  • The levels of salivary cortisol and cortisone in Korean adults were measured for the first time using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The salivary cortisol and cortisone were separated within 10 min. The regression coefficients (r) of the calibration curves were greater than 0.999 for the two steroids. The limits of quantitation (LOQ) were 0.2 ng/ml for cortisol and 1 ng/ml for cortisone. The intra-day precisions of the assay were <3.9% and 8.6% for cortisol and cortisone respectively, and the inter-day precisions were <1.9% and 4.3% for cortisol and cortisone, respectively. The salivary cortisone concentrations were approximately 4-9 times higher than those of salivary cortisol during the daytime. Diurnal rhythms, during which the cortisol and cortisone concentrations were higher in the morning than in the afternoon, were also observed. The present assay may be useful for the diagnosis of several adrenal dysfunctions in clinical biochemistry.

  • The effect of topical application with 10, 20 and 30 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml cortisone and hydrocortisone to the fifth stadium larvae of the silkworm, B. mori on fat body glycogen, protein, total lipids, phospholipids, neutral lipids and haemolymph trehalose and protein has been studied. The fat body glycogen haemolymph trehalose significantly decreased in all the treated groups except in the 10 and 20 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml treated groups. The fat body protein increased significantly in all the cortisone and hydrocortisone treated groups except in the group treated with 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$ hydrocortisone. Whereas that of haemolymph protein significantly increased in all the groups treated with cortisone and hydrocortisone. The total lipids, phospho1ipids and neutral lipids of the fat body decreased significantly in all the groups treated with cortisone and hydrocortisone when compared with that of carrier control.

  • The authors have investigated the roles of cortisone and calcium on the depressive effects of local anesthetics on the acetylcholine-induced skeletal muscle contraction in frog. The results are as follows. 1. Tetracaine, cocaine, lidocaine and procaine decreased the acetylcholine-induced skeletal muscle contraction. 2. Cortisone increased the depressive effects of local anesthetics on the acetyl-choline-induced skeletal muscle contraction. 3. There was a tendency that in high calcium concentration, the depressive effects of cocaine and lidocaine on acetylcholine-induced skeletal muscle contraction were increased.

  • This study was conducted to abserve the effects of cortisone acetate, estrogenic hormone and tocopherol on the antibody tresponse to both pullorum suspects and negatives of The increase of antibody titer was shown in a few birds after the treatment of either cortisone acetate or estrogenic hormone. There wuas no change in antibody titer of chickens treated with tocopherol.

  • The purpose of this investigation was to observe the effect of the excessive administration of cortisone on the mast cells of submaxillary gland of albino rats. The eighteen albino rats weighing about 100gm were divided into five experimental groups (fifteen rats) and one normal group(three rats). Five experimental groups of three rats were treated intramuscularly with 25mg cortisone acetate every 2 hours for 2,4,6,8 and 10 hours. The results were as follows : 1. In the two and four hours-injected rats, the mast cells of the submaxillary gland were similar with those of normal group. 2. In the eight and ten hours-injected rats, the number of the mast cells was markedly decreased and metachromatic granules were tended to be decreased.
