The brains of adolescents experience rapid changes, which has been studied to prove relatedness between neuroanatomical properties and IQ. But, most previous studies infer the relatedness from purely cross-sectional data. This study not only measured the thickness of the cerebral cortex once, but traced its variability and the relatedness between IQ and this variability, which was presumed to be 75. Healthy adolescents (M=16yr. and 4month) were divided into 5-stage categories based on their intellectual ability and MRI scan was made twice every 6 months to measure the variablity of their cerebral cortex. As a result, a big difference in the variability of the cerebral cortex was shown based on their IQ. Three groups with an IQ of more than 120 showed a decrease in the thickness of the cerebral cortex in 11 brain regions, while two groups with an IQ lower than 120 showed an increase in the cerebral cortex thickness in 5 to 8 regions. It is presumed that the lower the IQ, the slower the maturation of the cerebral cortex.

The aim of this study was to investigate the thickness of angular cortex and bone density of mandible in normal person. Age changes and sex differences of those were comprised in this study. Material included 456 pantomographic views and 309 intraoral films taken by paralleling technic. 1. Conclusions from this study were as follows. The thickness of mandibular angular cortex increased with age in both sexes before 15 to 19-year-old group. And those were relatively constant in the age range from 20 to 49 years in male and in the age range from 20 to 39 years in female, but decreased after that age. 2. The thickness of mandibular angular cortex were larger in male than in female. And no significant differences between sexes were noted before 40 to 49-year-old group. 3. Changes of bone density with age were analogous to changes of thickness of mandibular angular cortex. Correlation coefficients between changes of bone density and age were arranged, and male group underwent comparatively low correlation while insignificant statistically in female gruop. And no significant differences between sexes were found in all age groups except 50 to 59-year-old group.
This study was performed to retrospectively pursue any correlation between renal cortex thickness (RCT), outer medulla thickness (OMT) on ultrasonography (US) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) with International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) stage. Medical records and US findings of the dogs diagnosed CKD were reviewed for comparing to those of the clinically healthy dogs from March. 2015 through June. 2016. To evaluate the correlation about normal and CKD patients, RCT and the OMT were measured on US images. RCT and OMT were adjusted by dividing body surface area for standardization (RCTS, OMTS). Also the ratio of RCT/OMT were calculated and these indices were evaluated to investigate any tendency between 5 groups (normal and 4 IRIS stages) using Jonckheere-Terpstra trend test (J-T test). The RCTS showed a declining tendency (p < 0.02) and the OMTS showed an inclining tendency from normal through each IRIS stage (p < 0.01). The RCT/OMT showed also declining tendency (p < 0.01). Although the gold standard for renal function including GFR is lack, it is thought that differentiation between normal and CKD patients could be possible on US measurement of renal cortex and outer medulla thickness, which could be an alternative index for kidney function in diagnostic imaging.
This study is to investigate neuro-anatomical correlation between neuropsychological results and cerebral cortex thickness of cognitive ability in the brain MRI targeting the patients with mild cognitive impairment. It was that 78 people who were diagnosed as first Parkinson's disease followed by neuropsychological screening battery(Parkinson's disease with mild cognitive impairment: 39 people; Parkinson's disease with normal cognition: 39 people) and 32 people of normal group were selected. Correlation between mild cognitive impairment and normal cognitive impairment and correlation between neuropsychological screening battery and cerebral cortex thickness in the brain MRI were performed by independent sample t-test or Pearson correlation coefficient and then level of significance of collected data was verified in p<0.05. As a result, cerebral cortex thickness of the Parkinson's disease with mild cognitive impairment in both side precuneas and right inferiortemporal lobe had statistically significant decrease. In addition, function of visuospatial ability, verbal and visual memory was reduced in neuropsychological screening battery for cognitive assessment. Especially, there was correlation between neuropsychological screening battery of verbal and visual memory anatomical left precuneus.
This study attempts to investigate the developmental alterations of rat cerebral cortex, and the effects of EGEE on the developmental cerebral cortex in the prenatal, postnatal and adults were examined by morphological methods and H-E staining was used for the histological changes. In the case of injection of EGEE, at 14 day of fetal phase, parietal cortex was thickest $(95{\pm}12.7\;{\mu}m)$ but, it was thinner than in the control group $(102{\pm}14.0\;{\mu}m)$ and, occipital cortex $(57{\pm}10.5\;{\mu}m)$ compared with other cortexes was the thinnest in fetal phase. In the suckling phase, each cortex grew thick quickly but, after weanning phase, the growth of the cortex slowed and the thickness of cortex was similar to that of cortex in the adult phase. At 105 day after birth, the parietal cortex was thickest $(934{\pm}21.6\;{\mu}m)$ but, decreased compared with control group $(1113{\pm}19.0\;{\mu}m)$. When EGEE was injected in intraperitoneal of rat, the number of neuroblasts per unit area was largest $(207.7{\pm}11.4/10^{-2}\;mm$ at the mantle layer of parietal cortex at 14 day of fetal phase but, decreased compared with control group $(224.2{\pm}13.8/10^{-2}\;mm$ , and the size was largest $(7.5{\pm}1.3\;{\mu}m)$ at the ependymal cell layer of occipital cortex at 3 day after birth but, decreased compared with control group $(9.0{\pm}1.2\;{\mu}m)$. Simillar to control group, the number of granular cells and pyramidal cells were largest at the II and III layer of parietal cortex, but decreased during developmental phase. The size was largest at the IV and V layer of occipital cortex but it was decreased compared with control group. When EGEE was injected in intraperitoneal of rat, the cerebral cortex from fetal phase to 3 day after birth has differentiated into the 3 layers; ependymal, mantle and marginal layer, but empty cisternaes or vacoules in the cerebral cortexes and the condensed phases of neuroblasts were appeared. From 5 day after birth, it has differentiated into the 4 layers; molecular, external granular, mixed layer of internal granular, external and internal pyramidal cells and multiformal layer but, empty cisternaes or vacoules in the granular and pyramidal cell layers were appeared and the number per unit area of neuron was decreased. In the cerebral cortex of the weaning and adult phases, division of cell layers was not clear and empty cisternae was formed in the cortex with the cells in external granular and pyramidal cell layers, was magnified or condensed around blood vessels of neurons.
Previous studies, including our own, indicate that distinct morphological changes in rodent adrenal cortex could be induced by exposure of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC). In the present study, we conducted histological analyses of adrenocortical substructure using a nonylphenol-treated F1 rat model. The adrenal weight of NP-5000 group was significantly declined in female rats (p<0.001), while the adrenal weights of NP-treated groups were not significantly changed in male rats. The thickness of zona glomerulosa layers of female rats in NP-5000 group was significantly declined (p<0.001) but zona fasciculata layers were not changed. The zona reticularis layers of NP-treated group were significantly thinner than those of control group (NP-50, p<0.05; NP-5000, p<0.01). In male adrenal glands, there was no significant change of zona glomerulosa layers in NP-treated groups while the thickness of zona fasciculata in NP-5000 group was significantly decreased (p<0.01). Like female rats, the thickness of zona reticularis in NP-treated groups was significantly decreased (NP-50, p<0.001; NP-5000, p<0.05). Present study demonstrated that the adrenal histology could be altered by low-dose NP exposure in F1 rats, and the effect might be sexually dimorphic. Further study will be helpful for understanding possible adrenal pathophysiology induced by EDC exposure, and EDC-related sexually dimorphic phenomena in rodent adrenals.
The effects of Acanthopanacis cortex water extract on allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in Sprague-Dawley male rats treated with 2.5% 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) on the dorsal skin were evaluated. The concentration of TBARS in plasma and liver was increased in ACD rats and was significantly decreased in Acanthopanacis cortex fed group (ACFG) compared to CG (control group). Serum Ig E level was significantly increased in CG compared to normal group, while that of ACFG was significantly decreased. The epidermal thickness of CG was significantly increased compared to that of normal group, while that of ACFG was significantly decreased compared to that of CG These results indicated that the Acanthopanacis cortex water extract administration improved lipid preoxidation, antioxidative activity, serum Ig E level and epidermal thickness in rats with ACD.
Purpose: The study was performed to compare patients with anatomical variations in facial asymmetry with patients in the normal range using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to take the preoperative condition into consideration in the case of a sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO). Methods: The study was conducted on 46 adult patients composed of 2 subdivided groups, an asymmetry group (n=26) and a symmetry group (n=20). The asymmetry group was divided between patients with hemimandibular hyperplasia (HH, n=8) and hemimandibular elongation (HE, n=18). Using cross-sectional computed tomography images, the thickness of cancelleous bone in the buccal area of the mandible, thickness of buccal cortex in the buccal aspect of the mandible, thickness of cancellous bone in the inferior aspect of the mandible, thickness of buccal cortex in the inferior aspect of the mandible, and cross-sectional surface area of the mandible were measured. Results: In the asymmetry group, the cross-sectional area of the mandible including the inferior alveolar nerve positioned on the affected side was significantly different from the symmetry group. Thickness of cancelleous bone in the buccal aspect of the mandible, thickness of cancelleous bone in the inferior aspect of the mandible, and cross-sectional surface area of the mandible in the affected site of hemimandibular hyperplasia was significantly smaller than in the symmetry group. Conclusion: The inferior alveolar nerve runs lower and in a more buccal direction and shows a smaller cross-sectional surface of the mandible in the hemimandibular hyperplasia patients with asymmetry.

Objectives In this study, the authors evaluated the correlation between levels of serum lipid, homocysteine, and folate with volumes of hippocampus, amygdala, corpus callosum, and in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) or Alzheimer's disease (AD) type. Methods The study recruited patients who visited the dementia clinic of Haeundae Paik Hospital in Korea between March 2010 and June 2014. Among those, patients who had taken the neurocognitive test, brain magnetic resonance imaing, tests for serum lipid, homocysteine, folate, and apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotyping and diagnosed with aMCI or AD were included for analysis. Bilateral hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, amygdala and corpus callosum were selected for region of interest (ROI). The cross-sectional relationships between serum lipid, homocysteine, folate and ROI were assessed by partial correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis. Results In patients with aMCI, old age (> 80) and APOE ${\varepsilon}4$ carrier were associated with AD [odds ration (OR) : 12.80 ; 95% confidence interval (CI) : 2.25-72.98 and OR : 4.48 ; 95% CI : 1.58-12.67, respectively]. In patients with aMCI or AD, volumes and thickness of ROI were inversely correlated with levels of serum lipid and homocysteine. In multiple linear regression analyses, higher total cholesterol level was related to lower left, right hippocampus volume and left amygdala volume ; higher low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was related to lower right entorhinal cortex thickness ; higher homocysteine level was related to lower corpus callosum volume. Conclusions Higher serum lipid and homocysteine levels are associated with decreased volume of hippocampus, amygdala, corpus callosum and entorhinal cortex thickness in patients with aMCI or AD. These findings suggest that serum lipid and homocysteine levels are associated with AD as a modifiable risk factor.

The purpose of this study was comparision of conventional tomography with reformatted computed tomography for dental implant in locating the mandibular canal. Five dogs were used and after conventional tomographs and reformatted computed tomographs were taken, four dentist traced all films. Mandibles were sectioned with 2mm slice thickness and the sections were then radiographed(contact radiography). Each radiographic image was traced and linear measurements were made from mandibular canal to alveolar crest, buccal cortex, lingual cortex, and inferior border. Following results were acquired : 1. Reformatted computed tomographs were exacter than conventional tomography by alveolar crest to canal length of -0.6mm difference between real values and radiographs. 2. The average measurements of buccal cortex to mandibular canal width and lingual cortex to mandibular canal width of conventional tomographs were exacter than reformatted computed tomographs, but standard deviations were higher than reformatted computed tomographs. 3. Standard deviations of reformatted computed tomographs were lower than conventional tomographs at all comparing sites 4. At reformatted computed tomography 62.5% of the measurements performed were within. : filmm of the true value, and at conventional tomography 24.1% were. 5. Mandibular canal invisibiity was 0.8% at reformatted computed tomography and 9.2% at conventional tomography. Reformatted computed tomography has been shown to be more useful radiographic technique for assessment of the mandibular canal than conventional tomography.
