Distribution properties of seasonal airborne sea salt in the seashore (해안가의 계절별 비래염분량의 분포 특성)

  • When the concrete structures are in contact with seawater, concentration of chloride for estimating chloride diffusion coefficient can be defined as the chloride concentration of sea water. However, in case the concrete structures, constructed in the seashore, aren't directly in contact with seawater, it is difficult to establish the interface concentration of chloride. In addition, marine concrete structures are greatly affected by salt attack such as rebar corrosion, among the cause of salt attack, airborne sea salt is primary factor. Therefore, in this study, salt attack environment by airborne sea salt was investigated in terms of a seasonal distribution at 33 spots, 6 areas in the East, West, South coast for 1 year. Results indicated that in the South coast, the amount of the airborne sea salt is comparatively higher in summer. in the West coast. higher in winter. On the other hand, in the East coast, the amount of the airborne sea salt is rarely affected by a season.

  • The chloride ion penetrating into concrete is classified as the fixed chloride ion being bound in reacting to cement hydrate and the free chloride ion having a direct effect on rebar corrosion because being in solution inside porosity of concrete. Therefore, in order to study the diffusion properties of chloride ion, it is needed to evaluate binding chloride ion in concrete. In this study, we tried to give a fundamental information on diffusion of chloride ion in concrete with mineral admixtures through analysis of micro-structure transformations in concrete and effects on binding of chloride ion in cement paste when mixed with fly-ash, blast furnace slag, silica fume etc. which are used to improve durability and permeability of concrete

  • Airborne chlorides is moved to inland by sea wind and attach to the surface of concrete then penetrated into concrete. In addition, concrete structures are greatly affected by salt attack primarily due to airborne chlorides like it can be seen through the corrosion of rebar. Therefore, it is important to review the relationship among airborne, surface and penetrated chlorides. In this study, airborne, surface and penetrated chlorides were examined in terms of surface roughness of concrete. The results showed that penetrated and surface chlorides have close relationship with surface roughness of concrete.

  • Recently, physical properties of concrete containing ternary blended cement were actively researching to develop durability, mobility, and atc. as well as strength increase of concrete. In this study, durability of concrete such as the resistance against chloride ion penetration, rebar corrosion, freeze and thaw, and sulfate were researched for concrete containing ordinary portland cement(OPC) and ternary blended cement(TBC), respectively. For this purpose, concrete specimens containing OPC and TBC, respectively, were made for 37.5% of W/C, and then various durability experiments described above were carried out. As a result, it was observed from the test that concrete containing TBC showed excellent durability than concrete containing OPC.

  • Deicing agent affect concrete durability such as scaling, rebar corrosion strength of concrete. In this study, developed deicing agent satisfied with EL610 is evaluated to compare affects to concrete with no deicing agent and chloride-containing deicing agents. Deicing agents are applied to concrete surface during four months twice a week. Chloride content, chloride penetration depth and concrete strength are evaluated. After experiment, chloride content, chloride penetration depth of concrete are as follows. Chloride-containing deicing > Eco friendly deicer > No deicing agents. Concrete strength are also as follows. Chloride-containing deicing > Eco friendly deicer > No deicing agents. From experiment, developed deicing agent shows low chloride content in concrete and affect concrete strength little lower than chloride-containing deicing.

  • Fiber Reinforced Polymers are recognized as the alternative materials for solving the problem due to the excellent corrosion-resistant property, light-weight and higher strength than steel. Glass fiber is superior to other fibers from the economical point of view but the mechanical property is not. For this reason, researches to improve the mechanical property of glass fiber reinforced polymer rebar has been conducted and it emerged as a solution to make the bar as a hybrid type with carbon fibers. This paper presents results of experimental program to investigate the scattering effectiveness of carbon fibers in glass FRP bar.

Area index of airborne chlorides at the seashore in Korea (우리나라 해안의 비래염분에 대한 지역계수 산정)

  • Concrete structures in the seashore are greatly affected by salt attack primarily due to airborne chlorides like it can be seen through the corrosion of rebar. This study intends to investigate characteristics on the salinity of the airborne chlorides in terms of areas. Salinity measurement devices were installed at 27 areas along with seashore throughout the country. The area index for airborne chlorides were established according to the measurements. In Gochang and Taean area showed higher value of area index over 10. In addition, the Eastern coast showed higher index compared to the Western and Southern coast.

  • Precast concrete (PC) structure is one of the type of the structures which is made in a facility prior to installing it to a construction field. The contact surfaces between two PC structures should be treated for obtaining enough binding force by inducing prestressing force. However, in the many cases, the contact surface causes the crack and leakage of water. These cracks and water leakage can cause the corrosion of the rebar, and the corrosion of the rebar can severely reduce the long-term durability. In this study, the SMA wire connector is suggested to solve the problem with the contact surfaces between two PC structures. The pull-out resistance of the suggested SMA wire connector is evaluated by conducting the tests to find the effect of the number of wires, shape of connector part, and shape memory effect. As a result of this study, the empirical formula is suggested to estimate the pull-out resistance related with the effects of the shape of the connector, shape memory effect, and the adhesive force. The validity between the estimated pull-out resistance and the measured value is confirmed.

Evaluation of Half Cell Potential Measurement in Cracked Concrete Exposed to Salt Spraying Test (염해에 노출된 균열부 콘크리트의 반전위 평가)

  • Several techniques for steel corrosion detection are proposed and HCP (half cell potential) technique is widely adopted for field investigation. If concrete has cracks on surface, steel corrosion is rapidly accelerated due to additional intrusion of chloride and carbon dioxide ions. This study is for an evaluation of HCP in cracked concrete exposed chloride attack. For this work, RC (reinforced concrete) beams are prepared considering 3 w/c ratios (0.35, 0.55, and 0.70) and several cover depths (10~60 mm) and various crack widths of 0.0~1.0 mm are induced. For 35 days, SST (salt spraying test) is performed for corrosion acceleration, and HCP and corrosion length of rebar are evaluated. With increasing crack width, w/c ratios, and decreasing cover depth, HCP measurements increase. HCP evaluation technique is proposed considering the effects of w/c ratios, crack width, and cover depth. Furthermore anti-corrosive cover depths are obtained through Life365 program and the results are compared with those from this study. The results shows relatively big difference in cracked concrete, however provide similar anti-corrosive conditions in sound concrete.
