  • Fatigue tests were carried out by a rotary bending testing machine of cantilever type. M.E.F.(ferrite encapsulated islands of martensite) materials were made by a series of heat treatment from a low carbon steel(SM 20 C). The fatigue tests were conducted at stress levels of 302 MPa and with frequencies of 25Hz, 2.5 Hz and 0.5 Hz in 3% NaCl solution. The fatigue strength increased with frequency got higher. The microcracks and corrosion pits were generated at the boundary between the matrix and the 2nd phase. The cracks generated by the corrosion pits were coalesced with the pits around the notch and became the initial crack. The $N_i/N_f$ ratio increased as the frequency and stress level decreased. The interference phenomenon increased with stress level and frequency gots higher. The crack propagation rate was delayed as the stress level lowers and the frequency gets higher, however, the range of the stress intensity factor depended only on a stress level.

  • One of the useful technologies for light-weightening of components required in the automobile and machine industry is to use high strength materials. To improve material properties, the carbonizing treatment, nitrifying treatment, and shot-peening method are representatively applied. However, the shot-peening method is generally used to remove surface defect on steel and to improve the fatigue strength of the surface. Benefits of shot-peening are increasing resistance against fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, fretting, galling, erosion and closing of pores. In this paper, the effect of shot-peening on the corrosion of SUP-9 steel immersed in a 3.5% NaCl solution and corrosion characteristics from heat treatment during the shot peening process has been investigated. The immersion test was performed on four kinds of specimens. Corrosion potential, the polarization curve, residual stress etc. Were analyzed from the experimental results.

  • A study of new materials that are light-weight, high in strength has become vital to the machinery of auto industries. But then, there are a lot of problems with developing such materials that require expensive tools, and a great deal of time and effort. Therefore, the improvement of fatigue strength and fatigue life are mainly focused on by adopting residual stress. And Influence of corrosive condition for corrosion fatigue crack was investigated, after immersing in 3.5%NaCl, $10%HNO_3$+3.5%HF, $6%FeCl_3$. The immersion period was performed for 365days. The compressive residual stress was imposed on the surface according to each shot velocity based on shot peening, which is the method of improving fatigue life and strength. Fatigue life shows more improvement in the shot peened material than in the un peened material in corrosion conditions. The threshold stress intensity factor range was decreased in corrosion environments over ambient. Compressive residual stress of surface on the Shot-peen processed operate resistance force of fatigue crack propagation. The fatigue crack growth rate of the Shot-peened material was lower than that of the un peened material. Also m, fatigue crack growth exponent and number of cycle of the shot peened material was higher than that of the un peened material. That is concluded from effect of da/dN.

  • Fatigue tests were performed in various simulated body environments reflecting various factors (such as body fluids, artificial saliva) relevant within a living body. First, the fatigue limit under a simulated body environment (artificial saliva) was evaluated and the governing factors of implant fatigue strength were looked into by observing the fracture mode. The fatigue life of an implant decreased in the artificial saliva environment compared with that in the ringer environment. Furthermore, in the artificial saliva environment, the implant fracture mode was fatigue failure of fixture as opposed to the abutment screw mode in the ringer environment. In the fatigue test, corrosion products were observed on the implant in the simulated body environment. A larger amount of corrosion products were generated on the artificial saliva specimen than on the ringer specimen. It is thought that the stronger corrosion activity on the artificial saliva specimen as compared with that on the ringer specimen led to an overall decrease of fatigue life of the former specimen. In the case of the implant with a nitrided abutment screw eliminated hardened layer (TixN), a several times increase in fatigue life is achieved in comparison with tungsten carbide-coated implants.

  • A method for assessing fatigue vulnerability of steel bridge members considering corrosion and truck traffic variation with time is proposed to evaluate the reduction of fatigue strength in steel bridge members. A fatigue limit state function including corrosion and traffic variation effect is established. The interaction between the average corrosion depth and the fatigue strength reduction factor is applied to the limit state function as the reduction term of strength. Three types of truck traffic change is modeled for representing real traffic change trend. Monte-Carlo simulation method is used for reliability analysis which provides the data to obtain fatigue vulnerability curves. The estimation method proposed was verified by comparing with the results of reference study and applying to the steel bridges in service.

  • Many bulk carrier losses have been reported of late, and one of the possible causes of such casualties is thought to be the structural failure of aging hulls in rough weather. Clearly, in such cases, vessels that start out belong adequate somehow become marginal later in life. Fatigue and corrosion related potential problems may be the most important factors affecting such age related vessel damage. With respect to fatigue, extensive studies have been done worldwide both experimentally and theoretically, and the results have been applied to some extent. However, in the case of corrosion effects, additional research is still needed to better understand, clarify and address the various strength uncertainties and their effects on structural behavior. This paper develops a probabilistic corrosion rate estimation model for the longitudinal strength members of bulk carriers. The model is based on available statistical data for corrosion of existing bulk carriers. The corrosion data collected are documented for future use.

  • In case of $K_{Imax}$ < $K_{Iscc}$, the corrosion fatigue of high strength steel in 0.1N $H_{2}$S $O_{4}$ solution and 3.5% salt water is as follows. 1. The fatigue life shortens in order of 3.5% salt water and 0.1N $H_{2}$S $o_{4}$ solution. 2. The fatigue crack growth rate in air is obtained as the following equation. (dc/dN)$_{atr}$=7.23*10$^{-6}$ (.DELTA. K)$^{2.23}$ 3. The corrosion fatigue crack growth rate in environment is divided into three regions, that is, First Region, Second Region and Third Region from the small cyclic stress intensity. 4. The formation rate of the active surface on metal is slower than the mechano-chemical reaction rate in First Region. The crack growth rate depends on time and the cyclic stress intensity and is expressed as the following equation. (dc/dN)$_{I}$=C(/DELTA. K)$^{\delta}$ 5. The formation rate of the active surface is faster than the mechano-chemical reaction rate in Second Region and the synergistic effect by stress and corrosion becomes slow. In case the fatigue load is large, we have the critical crack growth rate which is not related to the cyclic stress intensity. 6. The corrosion crack growth rate by the mechano-chemical reaction is the same in $H_{2}$S $O_{4}$ solution and salt water, so Hydrogen accelerates the crack growth. 7. The environment has no effect on the corrosion fatigue crack growth rate in Third Region. 8. In First Region and Second Region, dimple is observed on the fatigue fracture surface in 0.1N $H_{2}$S $O_{4}$ solution. 9. The striation is observed in any environment as in air in Third Region and its interval approximately coincide with the crack growth rate.ate.e.e.

  • This paper dealt with the effect of the ratios N2 to H2 gas on the corrosion fatigue failure behavior of ion-nitrided SM45C steel specimens. The specimens were water cooled after ion-nitriding at 500.deg. C for 3hrs in 5 Torr, 0.8N$_{2}$ and 0.5N$_{2}$ atmospheres. As the nitrogen concentration increases, the higher compressive residual stresses developed in the surface layer and the depth of nitrided layer increased, which in turn gave rise to increases in fatigue strength and corrosion fatigue life. In the region less than 1.5 * 10$^{5}$ cycles, fatigue failure initiated at the brittle nitrided case, whereas in the region higher than 1.5 * 10$^{5}$ cycles crack initiated from the non-metallic inclusions in the subsurface. The initiation of corrosion fatigue failure was mainly attributed to pitting of case hardened surface layer.

  • Corrosion characteristics on the 12Cr alloy steel of turbine blade was electro-chemically investigated in 3.5wt% NaCI and 12.7wt% Na2S04 solution, respectively. Electro-chemical polarization test, Huey test and Oxalic acid etching test were previously conducted to estimate corrosion susceptibility of the material. And, using the horizontal corrosion fatigue tester, corrosion fatigue characteristics of 12Cr alloy steel in distilled water, 3.5wt% NaCI solution, and 12.7wt%(1M) Na2S04 solution were also fracture-mechanically estimated and compared their results. Parameter considered was room temperature, 60'C and 90'C. Corrosion fatigue crack length was measured by DC potential difference method.Obtained results are as follows,1) 12Cr alloy steel showed high corrosion rate in 3.5wt% NaCI solution and Na2S04 solution at high tempratue.2) Intergranular corrosion sensitivity of 12 Cr alloy was smaller than austenitic stainless steel.3) Corrosion fatigue crack growth rate in 3.5wt% NaCI and 12.7wt%(IM) Na2S04 solution is entirely higher than in the distilled water, and also increased with the temperature increase.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of acid fog on the rust formation behavior of weathering steel (SMA50) which is used in uncoated bridges. Weathering steel didn't form the passive film under the environment of acid fog(pH5,6), whereas the environment of distilled water formed the protective oxide film. Therefore, the construction of weathering steel under the environment extremely exposed to SOx and NOx which are the main compositions of acid fog is not adequate. Fatigue limits of weathering steel under acid fog environment are remarkably decreased as compared with environment of distilled water. The corrosive constituents in acid fog has piled up the corrosion products on specimen surface and generated the corrosion pits. Because of the high stress concentration arising at this corrosion pit, relatively low fatigue limits were obtained for acid fog specimens.
