This paper discusses the chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement in marine concrete structures focusing on the variability in the progress of deterioration. Through tests and analyses of reinforced concrete slabs taken out from existing open-pile structures that have been in service for 30 to 40 years, the following topics were particularly discussed: variation in chloride ion profiles of concrete, variation in corrosion properties of reinforcement embedded in concrete, and influence of the reinforcement corrosion on the load-carrying capacity of the concrete slabs. As a result, their variability was found to be very large even in one reinforced concrete slab with almost the same conditions. It was also discussed how to determine the calculation parameters for prediction of decreasing in load-carrying capacity of concrete members with chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement.

In this study, in order to comprehend performance of corrosion inhibitor, the experiment study was conducted about corrosion characteristic of 3 steps(0.0, norm 1/2, norm) compared to organic corrosion inhibitor standard use of liquid and molar 3 steps(0.0, 0.3, 0.6%) of Chloride by added amount of inorganic corrosion inhibitor by the corrosion inhibitor types about 2.4kg/㎥, 4.8kg/㎥ based on Chloride ion content 1.2kg/㎥ for service life prediction of concrete structure by using Poteniostat.
In the present study, effects of an addition of Sn on the microstructure and corrosion behavior were investigated in Mg-4%Zn-(0-3)%Sn casting alloys. With an increase in the Sn content, the ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ dendritic cell size was reduced, whereas the total amount of precipitates increased due to the formation of the $Mg_2Sn$ phase. It was found in immersion and electrochemical corrosion tests that the addition of Sn has a detrimental effect on the corrosion resistance of the Mg-4%Zn alloy. Microstructural examinations of the corrosion product and the corroded surface indicated that an accelerated micro-galvanic effect by the $Mg_2Sn-phase$ particles and a less protective corrosion product on the surface were responsible for the increased corrosion rate at a higher Sn content.
Both electrogalvanized and hot-dip galvanized steel sheets have been finally produced via organic-inorganic surface coating process on the zinc surface to enhance corrosion resistance and afford additional functional properties. Recently, POSCO has been developed a variety of chromate-free coated steels that are widely used in household, construction and automotive applications. New organic-inorganic hybrid coating solutions as chromate alternatives are comprised of surface modified silicate with silane coupling agent and inorganic corrosion inhibitors as an aqueous formulation. In this paper we have prepared new type of hybrid coatings and evaluated quality performances such as corrosion resistance, spot weldability, thermal tolerance, and paint adhesion property etc. The electrogalvanized steels with these coating solutions exhibit good anti-corrosion property compared to those of chromate coated steels. Detailed components composition of coating solutions and experimental results suggest that strong binding between organic-inorganic hybrid coating layer and zinc surface plays a key role in the advanced quality performances.
The corrosion resistance of reinforcing bar was studied to endure the marine environment during shipment. The red rust on the surface did not damage the adherence in the concrete structures, especially in highly alkaline environment, but made the consumer doubt of the quality. The passivation process by alkalization of the quenching water in the tempcore process failed to endure the long shipping period. The ceramic coating by sol-gel process improved the corrosion resistance without damaging the mechanical properties and adherence between concrete and reinfiorcing bar. Optimal concentration of the coating solution and coating temperature were tested. No additional energy was necessary for the coating process by spraying during cooling process, resulting simplified process and low cost. Salt spray test, cyclic corrosion test and atmospheric test were employed to confirm the resistance. The corrosion rates were presented by rating number and polarization resistance. The coating layer was examined by FIB, XRD and SEM etc.

Hard coatings playa continuously increasing role in the field of tribology as well as for decorative applications. In both areas they are often also exposed to corrosive media. While especially hard nitride coatings show a high corrosion resistance for themselves, hard $coating_strate systems may suffer from a severe corrosion attack due to the defects in the coating structure (pores, pinholes) resulting from the PVD-typical film morphology. While a huge number of investigations cover the tribological properties, only limited studies deal with the corrosion behavjour of coating substrate systems and attempts are made to improve their corrosion resistance. The present paper shortly describes the corrosion mechanisms and repots characteristic examples of the system behaviour. Special emphasis is laid on recent investigations to improve the corrosion resistance by alloying, interlayers or multilayered coating structures.es.

The utilization of aluminum scrap is a subject of great importance in terms of reducing energy consumption and environmental protection. However, aluminum scrap contains impurities, which can degrade the properties of aluminum alloy, especially corrosion resistance. This study examines the effect of scrap charge rate of aluminum alloys about microstructures and corrosion characteristics. According to the metallographic examinations, Mg2Si tended to become coarser and its uniformity was decreased by increasing aluminum scrap charge rate. The immersion test exhibited corrosion progressed through the eutectic areas due to micro-galvanic interactions. Electrochemical measurements revealed that excess aluminum scrap could reduce the intergranular corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys. Results showed that the scrap charge rate is important factor in the design of corrosion resistance of aluminum die casting alloys.

Coated bars are protecting reinforcing bars from corrosion and enhancing durabilities of reinforced concrete structures are tested to evaluate corrosion protection properties. Tests are performed based on the relevant standards of ACI and ASTM, such as chemical resistance, salt water spray, salt crack test and chloride permeability test with the main variable of the coating thickness. Three type materials are tested by Polyethylene, epoxy and bare bar. Test results show good chemical protection property and chloride permeability. Polyethylene coated bar is good coating material than any other materials.

The object of this work is to develop an assessment system for pipeline integrity The system consists of four module applications for internal algorithm; the effect of corrosion in pipeline, crack, stress corrosion crack (SCC) and fatigue modules. Presently, the module of the external corrosion has been developed and the internal algorithm for the effect of corrosion in pipeline and the database of the system are described in this paper, The database of the system is separated to mainly four parts; geometry of pipeline, material properties, boundary conditions and general Properties. Each components of the system are designed by user-friendly concept. This system may give a guideline for maintenance and modifications for the pipeline at the industrial sight. Furthermore, a procedure to evaluate an inspection interval is also provided.

This paper reports results of a study conducted to assess the effect of degree of corrosion of reinforcing steel bar on their mechanical properties. Reinforcing steel bars, 13mm in diameter, that were corroded by electrically accelerated corrosion method in concrete specimens were removed and tested in tension. Results indicated that the level of reinforcement corrosion influenced yield point, the tensile strength and elongation of steel bars.
