  • Recently, reinforced concrete structures exposed to severe enviroment are increased in metropolitan area. The acid rain and CO2 penetrated towad rebar, thus rebar corrosion occurred. The corrosion of rebar in concrete is, as in most corrosion processes, an electrochemical nature. The corrosion may severely affect on durability and service life of such a concrete structures. This study was performed for the purpose of acquiring data about corrosion condition and considering a countermeasure to prevent rebar from corroding due to carbonation of concrete. An accelerated car bonation testing procedure was applied to measure the evolution of carbonation and rebar corrosion with time for various water-binder ratios and cement types.

  • An approach to achieving the ambitious goal of cost effectively extending the safe operation life of energy pipeline to 100 years is the application of health monitoring and life prediction tools that are able to provide both long-term remnant pipeline life prediction and in-situ pipeline condition monitoring. A critical step is the enhancement of technological capabilities that are required for understanding and quantifying the effects of key factors influencing buried steel pipeline corrosion and environmentally assisted materials degradation, and the development of condition monitoring technologies that are able to provide in-situ monitoring and site-specific warning of pipeline damage. This paper provides an overview of our current research aimed at developing new sensors and electrochemical cells for monitoring, categorising and quantifying the level and nature of external pipeline and coating damages under the combined effects of various inter-related variables and processes such as localised corrosion, coating cracking and disbondment, cathodic shielding, transit loss of cathodic protection.

  • In this study, the influence of compressive residual stress and corrosive condition for corrosion fatigue crack was investigated, after immersing in 3.5%NaCl, $10%HNO_3+3%HF,\;6%FeCl_3$. The immersion period was performed for 90days. The fatigue characterization of a spring steel with processed shot peening were performed by considering the several corrosion environments in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. By using the methods mentioned above, the following conclusions have been drawn: The fatigue life shows more improvement in the shot peened material than that in the un peened material. And the fatigue life shows improvement in ambient than in corrosion conditions. Threshold stress intensity factor range of the shot peened materials has higher than of the un peened materials. And the threshold stress intensity factor range was decreased in corrosion environments over ambient.

  • One of the main deteriorating factors that affect the service life of concrete structures is the corrosion of reinforcement. The chlorides penetrate the concrete, destroy the passive layer surrounding the steel, and help initiate the steel corrosion. A Corrosion Prediction System(CPS) has been developed to assist the engineer in analyzing the service life of existing sea-shore structures and future concrete repairs by calculate the chloride diffusion in concrete. The CPS calculates mixing design, physical properties or recent chloride profiles. The CPS can be used to evaluate changes in concrete cover, chloride loads, and environmental conditions in different structural designs.

  • Several methods have been developed to predict the rupture time of the boiler tubes in thermal power plant. However, existing life prediction methods give very conservative value at operating stress of power plant and rupture strain cannot be well estimated. Therefore, in this study, rupture time and strain prediction method accounting for creep, corrosion and heat transfer is newly proposed and compared with the current research results. The creep damage evolves by continuous cavity nucleation and constrained cavity growth. The corrosion damage evolves by steam side and fire side corrosion. The results showed good correlation between the theoretically predicted rupture time and the current research results. And rupture strain may be well estimated by using the proposed method.

  • With nano-$SiO_2$ and sulphate acid, a kind of colloid electrolyte is synthesized by sol-gel method. It is placed outside the reference electrode as a layer of gel electrolyte so as to decrease the leaching of $Cu^{2+}$ and increase the life of the reference electrode. The performance of the gel electrode in simulating soil solution is measured as follows: the potential of the electrodes ranging from 60 mV to 80 mV (vs. SCE) with potential variation no more than $\pm10mV$, enough resistance to polarization. The $Cu^{2+}$ effusion rate of the reference electrode without gel electrolyte is 3 times that with colloid electrolyte, which means that gel electrolyte can extend the life of the reference electrode significantly.

  • In order to solve the life prediction problem of damaged coating steel bar in magnesium cement concrete, this study tries to establish the marginal distribution function by using the corrosion current density as a single degradation factor. Representing the degree of steel corrosion, the corrosion current density were tested in electrochemical workstation. Then based on the Copula function, the joint distribution function of the damaged coating was established. Therefore, it is indicated that the corrosion current density of the bare steel and coated steel bar can be used as the boundary element to establish the marginal distribution function. By using the Frank-Copula function of Copula Archimedean function family, the joint distribution function of the damaged coating steel bar was successfully established. Finally, the life of the damaged coating steel bar has been lost in 7320d. As a new method for the corrosion of steel bar under the multi-dimensional factors, the two-dimensional Copula function has certain practical significance by putting forward some new ideas.

  • A lifetime prediction of holddown spring screw in nuclear fuel assembly was performed using fracture mechanics approach. The spring screw was designed such that it was capable of sustaining the loads imposed by the initial tensile preload and operational loads. In order to investigate the cause of failure and to predict the stress corrosion cracking life of the screw, a stress analysis of the top nozzle spring assembly was done using finite element analysis. The elastic-plastic finite element analysis showed that the local stresses at the critical regions of head-shank fillet and thread root significantly exceeded than the yield strength of the screw material, resulting in local plastic deformation. Normalized stress intensity factors for PWSCC life prediction was proposed. Primary water stress corrosion cracking life of the Inconel 600 screw was predicted by using integration of the Scott model and resulted in 1.78 years, which was fairly close to the actual service life of the holddown spring screw.

  • Corrosion highly affects the lifetime and performance of machinery metallic components. The effects of shot peening on the fatigue life of Al 7075-T6 under corrosive environment are investigated in this paper. Experimental results show that the fatigue limit of shot peened specimen increases about 52%. That means the fatigue life of metallic components is highly extended by shot peening. The corrosion greatly reduces the fatigue strength depending on the corrosive condition from one week up to one year. In case of shot peened specimen, the corrosion does not reduce the fatigue strength and fatigue life up to six months. It means that the shot peening has superior effectiveness to reduce the influence of corrosion to the metallic materials.

  • Nowadays the open-type lead-acid battery for vehicle use is being replaced with the sealed-type because it needs no maintenance and has a longer cycle life. Thus researches on this battery are being conducted very actively by many advanced battery companies. There is, however, a serious problem with the maintenance free(MF) battery that its cathode electrode has a limited cycle life due to a corrosion of grid. In this study, it was aimed to improve a corrosion resistance of the cathode grid which is commonly made of Pb-Ca alloy for a mechanical strength. For this purpose, various amounts of alloying elements such as Sn, Ag and Ba were added singly or together to the Pb-Ca alloys and investigated their corrosion behaviors. Batteries fabricated by using these alloys as cathode grids were subjected to life cycle test and their corrosion layers appeared at the interface between the grids and the active materials were carefully observed in order to clarify effects of alloying elements.
