The corrosion behavior of a ferritic/martensitic steel T91 exposed to an aqueous solution containing chloride and sulfate ions is investigated depending on the stimulated all-volatile treatment (AVT) and under oxygenated treatment (OT) conditions. The corrosion of T91 steel under OT condition is severe, while the corrosion under AVT condition is not. The co-existence of chloride and sulfate ions has antagonistic effect on the corrosion of T91 steel in both AVT and OT conditions. Unlike to corrosion resistance in the aqueous solution, OT pretreatment provides T91 steel lower oxidation-resistance than VAT pretreatment. From scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the lower corrosion resistance in the aqueous solution by VAT conditions possibly is due to the formation of pits. In addition, the lower oxidation resistance of T91 steel pretreated by OT conditions is explained as follows: the cracks formed during the immersion under OT conditions accelerated peeling-off rate of the oxide film.
In this study, corrosion fatigue characteristics of CF8M and CF8A steel were investigated on the simulated PWR condition(Temp.:$316^{\circ}C$, Pres.: 15:MPa). To make the simulated PWR condition. the special test machine consisted of INSTRON, Autoclave, LOOP and Measurement system was developed. As ${\Delta}K$ is ranged from 11 to $20MPa{\sqrt{m}}$, Crack growth rate of PWR condition is faster than air condition. Above $20MPa{\sqrt{m}}$, the crack growth rate of PWR and air condition is similar. Corrosion fatigue characteristics regardless of the ferrite contents($10{\sim}25wt.%$) is not different. After the test, the fracture surface of specimens was examined. It was difficult to verify the fracture modes such as striation, intergranular crack and cleavage and so on. As the ferrite content of CF8M is increased, the more particles covered fracture surface were peeled.

An electrochemical evaluation on the corrosion resistance for heavy anticorrosive paint was carried out for 5 kinds of heavy anticorrosive paints such as High solid epoxy(HE), Solvent epoxy(SE), Tar epoxy(TE), Phenol epoxy(PE), and Ceramic epoxy(CE) as parameters of DFT(Dry Film Thickness, 25${\mu}m$50${\mu}m$, solution condition(Flow of Nonflow). Corrosion current density of HE(DFT 50${\mu}m$ in case of flow condition was larger than that of nonflow condition. However, their values of the other anticorrosive paints were decreased compared to the nonflow condition. The values of AC impedance were increased with increasing of DFT regardless of kinds of anticorrosive paints. And the polarization resistance of cyclic voltammogram showed a good tendency to correspond with well the values of AC impedance measurement. HE and CE had a relatively good corrosion resistance than other heavy anticorrosive paint.
Steel is generally not corrosion resistant to water with formation of non protective rusts on its surface. Rusts are composed of iron oxides such as $Fe_3O_4$, $\alpha-$, $\beta-$, $\gamma-$and ${\delta}-FeOOH$. However, steel, particularly weathering steel containing small amounts of Cu, Ni and Cr etc., shows good corrosion resistance against rural, industrial or marine environment. Its corrosion rate is exceedingly small as compared with that of carbon steel. According to the exposure test results undertaken in outdoor environments, the atmospheric corrosion rate for weathering steel is only 1 mm for a century. Atmospheric corrosion for steels proceeds under alternate dry and wet conditions. Dry condition is encountered on steel surface on fine or cloudy days, and wet condition is on rainy or snowy days. The reason why weathering steel shows superior atmospheric corrosion resistance is due to formation of corrosion protective rusts on its surface under very thin water layer. The protective rusts are usually composed of two layer rusts; the upper layer is ${\gamma}-FeOOH$ termed as lepidocrocite, and inner layer is nano-particle ${\alpha}-FeOOH$ termed as goethite. This paper is aimed at elucidating the atmospheric corrosion mechanism for steel in comparison with corrosion in bulky water environment by use of empirical data. The summary is as follows: 1. No corrosion protective rusts are formed on steel in bulky water. 2. Atmospheric corrosion for steel is the corrosion under wetting and drying conditions. Corrosion and passivation occur alternately on steel surface. Steel, particularly weathering steel with small amounts of alloying elements such as Cu, Ni and Cr etc. enhances forming corrosion protective rusts by passivation.

Crevice corrosion tests were conducted to examine the corrosion properties of HYBRID (HYdrazine Base Reductive metal Ion Decontamination) which was developed to decontaminate the PWR primary coolant system. To compare the corrosion properties of HYBRID with commonly existing decontamination agents, oxalic acid (OA) and citric oxalic acid (CITROX) were also examined. Type 304 Stainless Steel (304 SS) and Alloy 600 which are major components of the primary coolant system in Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) were evaluated. Crevice corrosion tests were conducted under very aggressive conditions to confirm quickly the corrosion properties of primary coolant system structure components which have high corrosion resistance. Pitting and IGA were occurred in crevice surface under OA and CITROX conditions. But localized corrosion was not observed under HYBRID condition. Very low corrosion rate of less than $1.3{\times}10^{-3}{\mu}m/h$ was observed under HYBRID condition for both materials. On the other hand, under OA condition, Alloy 600 indicated comparatively uniform corrosion rate of $4.0{\times}10^{-2}{\mu}m/h$ but 304 SS indicated rapid accelerated corrosion in lower case than pH 2.0. In case of HYBRID condition, general corrosion and crevice corrosion were scarcely occurred. Therefore, material integrity of HYBRID in decontamination of primary coolant system in pressurized water reactor (PWR) reactor was conformed.

For a better understanding of the correlation between a corrosion and a microstructure, it is necessary to study a phase transformation with an annealing condition for Zr-Nb alloy. Zr-5wt.%Nb alloy with different phase characteristics was prepared with various annealing conditions. A microstructural study and corrosion test were performed to investigate the effect of a phase such as the phase type, fraction, and size on corrosion. The corrosion behavior of the Zr-5Nb alloy was very sensitive to the annealing condition, which affected the formation of the ${\beta}$-phases (${\beta}$-Nb or ${\beta}$. The corrosion rate of the Zr-5Nb alloy annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ with the formation of the ${\beta}$-Nb phase was lower than that of the Zr-5Nb alloy annealed from 600 to $800^{\circ}C$ with the formation of the ${\beta}$-Zr phase. The highest corrosion rate was observed for the ${\beta}$-quenched Zr-5Nb alloy. After a consideration of the corrosion rate and micro structure of the Zr-5Nb alloy, the corrosion resistance of that alloy was improved due to the formation of a small sized ${\beta}$-Nb phase which could be controlled by the annealing condition.
This paper presents the effect of external corrosion, material properties, operation condition and design thickness in pipeline on failure prediction using a failure probability model. The predicted failure assessment for the simulated corrosion defects discovered in corroded pipeline is compared with that determined by ANSI/ASME B31G code and a modified B31G method. The effects of environmental, operational, and random design variables such as defect depth, pipe diameter, defect length, fluid pressure, corrosion rate, material yield stress and pipe thickness on the failure probability are systematically studied using a failure probability model for the corrosion pipeline.
Corrosion of reinforcing steel bars is a major concern for ocean engineers when reinforced concrete structures are exposed to marine environments. Evaluating the degree of corrosion and corrosion-induced defects is extremely necessary to pursue a proper retrofit or rehabilitation plan for reinforced concrete structures. A promising inspection should be carried out for the evaluation, otherwise the retrofit or rehabilitation process would be useless. Nowadays, ultrasonic guided wave-based inspection techniques become quite promising for the inspection, mainly because of their long-range propagation capability and their sensitivity to different types of defects or conditions. Evaluating haw the guided waves response to the different types of defects or conditions is quite challenging and important. This study shows how surface conditions of reinforcing bars and a corrosion-induced defect, separation, affect guided wave propagation in reinforced concrete. Experiments and associated signal analysis show the sensitivity of guided waves to the surface conditions, as well as the amounts of separation at the interface between. concrete and steel bar.
The interaction between wear and corrosion can significantly increase total material losses in water chemistry environment. The corrosive wear tests of a PWR steam generator tube material (Alloy 690) against the anti vibration bar material (409 SS) were performed at room temperature. The tests were performed in alkaline water chemistry conditions. NaOH solution was selected for test condition to investigate the corrosive wear effect of steam generator tube material in alkaline pH condition without other factors. The flow induced vibration can caused tube damage and the corrosion can be occurred by water chemistry. The test results showed that, in the alkaline solution at pH 13.9, the corrosion current density was increased about ten times than that in the distilled water. And wear rate at pH 13.9 was increased about ten times from that at neutral condition. However, the wear rate was decreased with time. The decrease would be attributed to the change in roughness of specimen or sub-layer of the worn surface with time. From microstructure observation, severe abrasive shape and several wear debris were found. From those results, it could infer that the oxide film on Alloy 690 changed to easily breakable one in the alkaline water, and then abrasion with corrosion became the main wear mechanism.
The corrosion behavior of metal covered with mortar under a wet-dry cyclic condition were investigated to apply for the measurement of corrosion rates of reinforcing steel in concrete structure. The carbon steel in mortar having t=3 mm cover thickness was exposed to the alternate condition of 6 h immersion in chloride containing solution and 18 h drying at $25^{\circ}C$ and 50%RH. The electrochemical phenomena of a carbon steel and mortar interface was explained by an equivalent circuit consisting of a solution resistance, a charge transfer resistance and a CPE(Constant Phase Element). The corrosion rates were monitored continuously during exposure using an AC impedance technique. Simultaneously, the current distribution over the working electrode during impedance measurement was analyzed from the phase shift, $\theta$, in an intermediate frequency. The result showed that corrosion rate monitoring using an AC impedance method is suitable under the given exposure conditions even during the drying period when the metal is covered with the wetted mortar.
