Fingerprint recognition using a joint transform correlator (JTC) is the most well-known technology among optical fingerprint recognition methods. The JTC method optically compares the reference fingerprint image with the sample fingerprint image then examines match or non-match by acquiring a correlation peak. In contrast to the JTC method, this paper presents a new method to examine fingerprint recognition by producing a computer generated hologram (CGH) of those two fingerprint images and directly comparing them. As a result, we present some parameters to show that fingerprint recognition capability of the CGH direct comparison method is superior to that of the JTC method.

In this paper, the optimum coding method is proposed by using open library in order to improve the performance of a software correlator developed for Korea-Japan Joint VLBI Correlator(KJJVC). The correlation system for VLBI observing system is generally implemented with hardware using ASIC or FPGA because the computational quantity is increased geometrically according to the participated observatory number. However, the software correlation system is recently constructed at a massive server such as a cluster using software according to the development of computing power. Since VLBI correlator implemented with hardware is able to conduct data processing with real-time or quasi real-time compared with mostly observational time, software correlation has to perform optimal data processing in coding work so as to have the same performance as that of the hardware. Therefore, in this paper, the experimental comparison was conducted by open-source based fftw library released in FFT processing stage, which is the most important part of the correlator system for performing optimum coding work in software development phase, such as general method using fftw library or methods using SSE(Streaming SIMD Extensions), shared memory, or OpenMP, and method using merged techniques listed above. Through the experimental results, the proposed optimum coding method for improving the performance of developed software correlator using fftw library, shared memory and OpenMP is effectively confirmed by reducing correlation time compared with conventional method.
When developing a new GPS receiver module, the essential problems are evaluation of reliable algorithms, software debugging, and performance comparison between algorithms to find optimal solution. Most GPS receiver modules nowadays use a correlator to track signals from satellites and an MCU (Micro Controller Unit) to control operations of the entire module. The problem of software evaluation from MCU is very difficult, due to limitation of MCU resources and low ability of interfacing with user. Normally, user has to expense special tool kit for a limiting access to MCU but it is also hard to use. This article introduces an implementation of a GPS receiver test bed using correlator GP2021 interfacing with ISA (Industry Standard Architecture) PC bus. This way can give user complete control and visibility into the operation of the receiver, then user can easily debug program and test algorithms. For this article, the least square method is implemented to test the hardware and software performance.

This paper describes the development of the observational data transmission algorithm for high-speed network in radio astronomy. For the preprocessing of VLBI data observed by radio telescope, data transmission algorithm uses the VDIF specification, VDIFCP, and UDP protocol by transferring VLBI data stored in a massive storage server with one-to-one correspondence between the server and the RVDB of Daejeon correlator. A transmission method is proposed, which reads the recorded data in Mark5B VSI format and trnasmits 2048 Mbps VLBI data by software through UDP packet transmission, while RVDB system is waiting for the transmitting data from the server. In order to check the effectiveness of the proposed method, the data transmission between the massive storage server and RVDB is conducted and the transmitted data is correlated by Daejeon correlator for the accurate comparison concerning the data before and after. The transmitted data is shown to be completely the same as the original data without any data transmission loss. Henceforth, the developed data transmission algorithm in this research is expected to be applied effectively as e-VLBI for KaVA network.

This paper presents a synchronization method to determine the exact demodulation time using the MFM Flag of the 18000-3 PJM mode, along with the hardware structure to implement the proposed method. The proposed system detects an incipient peak using ITS(Initial Time Selector) and a correlator and achieves the final synchronization via identifying the peak position from the comparison of the outputs of two followed additional correlators. The peak detection algorithm and the choice of the templates of the correlators are described. Simulation results show that the proposed system performs successfully in noisy environment.

The applications of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers are becoming wider in various commercial and military systems including even small weapon systems such as artillery shells. The precision-guided munitions such as Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) of United States can be used for pinpoint strike by acquiring and tracking GNSS signals in high mobility situation. In this paper, a small GNSS receiver with embedded interference suppression capability working under high dynamic stress is developed which is applicable to the various weapon systems and can be used in other several harsh environments. It applies a kind of matched filter and multiple correlator schemes for fast signal acquisition and tracking of even weak signals and frequency domain signal processing method to eliminate the narrowband interference. To evaluate the performance of the developed GNSS receiver, the test scenario of high mobility and interference environment with the GNSS simulator and signal generator is devised. Then, the signal acquisition time, navigation accuracy, sensitivity, and interference suppression performances under high dynamic operation are evaluated. And the comparison test with the commercial GNSS receiver which has high sensitivity is made under the same test condition.

The effects of reflected wave of the sea on pseudolite ranging accuracy are analysed in this paper, when a pseudolite navigation system is used for wide area outdoor applications such as aircraft and vessels positioning. Methods for minimizing the influence of sea surface reflection wave were proposed. The methods include the appropriate correlator in pseudolite navigation system through the correlation performance comparison analysis in receiver design, the use of the technology of multiple antennas, and locating the transmitting station antenna on an appropriate position. From the results of experiments, the method of locating the antenna position shows the most reliable performance against the effect of surface reflection wave. The analysis results of the ranging accuracy improvement are addressed, when the multipath caused by sea surface reflection exists.
In this paper, we propose a new re-quantization method after FFT processing to prevent the distortion of correlation result of VCS (VLBI Correlation Subsystem). The re-quantization is used to rearrange the data bit so as to reduce the data rate processed as 16-bit of FFT result of VCS. Having done this procedure, we found that the distorted spectrum of correlation result occurred in the delay tracking experiments by the re-quantization method introduced for initial design of VCS. In order to solve this, two kinds of re-quantization method, that is, the comparison and selection-type, are proposed. The first is to re-quantize the FFT result as a valid-bit by comparing with the input data after determining the adequate threshold. The second is manually to select the valid-bit of FFT result after finding the valid-field of data according to the bit-distribution of input data. We confirmed that the second is more effective compared with the first through the experimental result, and it will be implemented without so much modification of applied method in the condition of the limited resource of FPGA. The re-quantization is, however, carried out with 4-bit in the proposed second method for FFT result, and then the distortion of correlation result is also appeared. To fix this problem, the bit for re-quantization is extended to 8-bit. The proposed 8-bit selection-type is effectively verified so that the distortion of correlation result disappeared by applying to VCS in consequence of the simulation and correlation experiments.
