In a mobile environment, communication takes place via SMS text messages. Vocabularies used in SMS texts can be expected to use vocabularies of different classes from those used in general Korean literary style sentence. For example, in the case of a typical literary style, the sentence is correctly initiated or terminated and the sentence is well constructed, while SMS text corpus often replaces the component with an omission and a brief representation. To analyze these vocabulary usage characteristics, the existing colloquial style corpus and the literary style corpus are used. The experiment compares and analyzes the vocabulary use characteristics of the colloquial corpus SMS text corpus and the Naver Sentiment Movie Corpus, and the written Korean written corpus. For the comparison and analysis of vocabulary for each corpus, the part of speech tag adjective (VA) was used as a standard, and a distinctive collexeme analysis method was used to measure collostructural strength. As a result, it was confirmed that adjectives related to emotional expression such as'good-','sorry-', and'joy-' were preferred in the SMS text corpus, while adjectives related to evaluation expressions were preferred in the Naver Sentiment Movie Corpus. The word embedding was used to automatically construct a sentiment lexicon based on the extracted adjectives with high collostructural strength, and a total of 343,603 sentiment representations were automatically built.
The aim of this paper is to study the morphemization of {Geuraegajigo} based on a spontaneous speech corpus. For this purpose, the distributions, the semantic functions, and the intonational phrase pattterns of the connective {Geuraegajigo} have been analyzed based on the corpus. The results are as follow; at first, coalescence that comes with a morphemization process was found, resulting in many variations. Secondly, there are three functions of it: [Direct/Indirect interrelationship], [Enumerate conjunction], and [Discourse marker]. And this semantic/functional diversity has many similarities with conjunctive adverbs. Lastly, intonational phrase patterns of {Geuraegajigo} accord with those of conjunctive adverbs. Especially, the discourse strategic IP pattern is connected with the short variation type. In conclusion, {Geuraegajigo} has finished turning into a conjunctive adverb through morphemization.
Machine translation refers to software that translates a source language into a target language, and has been actively researching Neural Machine Translation through rule-based and statistical-based machine translation. One of the important factors in the Neural Machine Translation is to extract high quality parallel corpus, which has not been easy to find high quality parallel corpus of Korean language pairs. Recently, the AI HUB of the National Information Society Agency(NIA) unveiled a high-quality 1.6 million sentences Korean-English parallel corpus. This paper attempts to verify the quality of each data through performance comparison with the data published by AI Hub and OpenSubtitles, the most popular Korean-English parallel corpus. As test data, objectivity was secured by using test set published by IWSLT, official test set for Korean-English machine translation. Experimental results show better performance than the existing papers tested with the same test set, and this shows the importance of high quality data.
Disambiguation of homographs is an important job in Korean semantic processing and has been researched for long time. Recently, machine learning approaches have demonstrated good results in accuracy and speed. Other knowledge-based approaches are being researched for untrained words. This paper proposes a hybrid method based on the machine learning approach that uses a lexical semantic network. The use of a hybrid approach creates an additional corpus from subcategorization information and trains this additional corpus. A homograph tagging phase uses the hypernym of the homograph and an additional corpus. Experimentation with the Sejong Corpus and UWordMap demonstrates the hybrid method is to be effective with an increase in accuracy from 96.51% to 96.52%.
This study is based on the Korean-Chinese parallel corpus, utilizing the Korean connective morpheme '-myenseo' and contrasting with the Chinese expression. Korean learners often struggle with the use of Korean Connective Morpheme especially when there is a lexical gap between their mother language. '-myenseo' is of the most use Korean Connective Morpheme, it usually contrast to the Chinese coordinating conjunction. But according to the corpus, the contrastive Chinese expression to '-myenseo' is more than coordinating conjunction. So through this study, can help the Chinese Korean language learners learn easier while studying '-myenseo', because the variety Chinese expression are found from the parallel corpus that related to '-myenseo'. In this study, firstly discussed the semantic features and syntactic characteristics of '-myenseo'. The significant semantic features of '-myenseo' are 'simultaneous' and 'conflict'. So in this chapter the study use examples of usage to analyse the specific usage of '-myenseo'. And then this study analyse syntactic characteristics of '-myenseo' through the subject constraint, predicate constraints, temporal constraints, mood constraints, negatives constraints. then summarize them into a table. And the most important part of this study is Chapter 4. In this chapter, it contrasted the Korean connective morpheme '-myenseo' to the Chinese expression by analysing the Korean-Chinese parallel corpus. As a result of the analysis, the frequency of the Chinese expression that contrasted to '-myenseo' is summarized into
. It can see from the table that the most common Chinese expression comparative to '-myenseo' is non-marker patterns. That means the connection of sentence in Korean can use connective morpheme what is a clarifying linguistic marker, but in Chinese it often connect the sentence by their intrinsic logical relationships. So the conclusion of this chapter is that '-myenseo' can be comparative to Chinese conjunction, expression, non-marker patterns and liberal translation patterns, which are more than Chinese conjunction that discovered before. In the last Chapter, as the conclusion part of this study, it summarized and suggest the limitations and the future research direction.
In the latest trend of machine translation research, the model is pretrained through a large mono lingual corpus and then finetuned with a parallel corpus. Although many studies tend to increase the amount of data used in the pretraining stage, it is hard to say that the amount of data must be increased to improve machine translation performance. In this study, through an experiment based on the mBART model using parallel corpus filtering, we propose that high quality data can yield better machine translation performance, even utilizing smaller amount of data. We propose that it is important to consider the quality of data rather than the amount of data, and it can be used as a guideline for building a training corpus.
The corpus callosum is the largest part of the brain, which is related to many neurological diseases. Snake model or active contour model is widely used in medical image processing field, especially image segmentation they look into the nearby edge, localizing them accurately. In this paper, corpus callosum segmentation using the snake model, is proposed. We tested a snake model on brain MRI. Then we compared the result with an active shape approach and found that snake model had better segmentation accuracy also faster than active shape approach.
The paper investigates the acoustic characteristics of English fricatives in the TIMIT corpus, with a special focus on the role of voicing in rendering fricatives in American English. The TIMIT database includes 630 talkers and 2,342 different sentences, and comprises more than five hours of speech. Acoustic analyses are conducted in the domain of spectral and temporal properties by treating gender, voicing, and place of articulation as independent factors. The results of the acoustic analyses revealed that acoustic signals interact in a complex way to signal the gender, place, and voicing of fricatives. Classification experiments using a multiclass support vector machine (SVM) revealed that 78.7% of fricatives are correctly classified. The majority of errors stem from the misclassification of /θ/ as [f] and /ʒ/ as [z]. The average accuracy of gender classification is 78.7%. Most errors result from the classification of female speakers as male speakers. The paper contributes to the understanding of the effects of voicing and gender on fricatives in a large-scale speech corpus.
this paper describes a baseline for an implementation of a corpus-based Korean TTS system. The conventional TTS systems using small-sized speech still generate machine-like synthetic speech. To overcome this problem we introduce the corpus-based TTS system which enables to generate natural synthetic speech without prosodic modifications. The corpus should be composed of a natural prosody of source speech and multiple instances of synthesis units. To make a phone level synthesis unit, we train a speech recognizer with the target speech, and then perform an automatic phoneme segmentation. We also detect the fine pitch period using Laryngo graph signals, which is used for prosodic feature extraction. For break strength allocation, 4 levels of break indices are decided as pause length and also attached to phones to reflect prosodic variations in phrase boundaries. To predict the break strength on texts, we utilize the statistical information of POS (Part-of-Speech) sequences. The best triphone sequences are selected by Viterbi search considering the minimization of accumulative Euclidean distance of concatenating distortion. To get high quality synthesis speech applicable to commercial purpose, we introduce a domain specific database. By adding domain specific database to general domain database, we can greatly improve the quality of synthetic speech on specific domain. From the subjective evaluation, the new Korean corpus-based TTS system shows better naturalness than the conventional demisyllable-based one.
The purpose of this paper is to provide corpus-based quantitative analyses of HEART and HEAD in order to examine their actual usage status and to consider some cognitive linguistic aspects associated with their use. The two corpora COCA and COHA are used for analysis in this study. The analysis of COCA corpus reveals that the total frequency of HEAD is much higher than that of HEART, and that the figurative use of HEART (60%) is two times higher than its literal use (32%); by contrast, the figurative use of HEAD (41%) is a bit higher than its literal use (38%). Among all four genres, both lexemes occur most frequently in fictions and then in magazines. Over the past two centuries, the use of HEART has been steadily decreasing; by contrast, that the use of HEAD has been steadily increasing. It is assumed that the decreasing use of HEART has partially to do with the decrease in its figurative use and that the increasing use of HEAD is attributable to its diverse meanings, the increase of its lexical use, and the partial increase in its figurative use. The analysis of the collocation of verbs and adjectives preceding HEART and HEAD, as well the modifying and predicating forms of HEART and HEAD also provides some relevant information of the usage of the two lexemes. This paper showcases that the quantitative information helps understanding not only of the actual usage of the two lexemes but also of the cognitive forces working behind it.
