An improved friction model was proposed with consideration of the effect of the sliding speed, the contact pressure and the temperature, and it was implemented into a user subroutine of a commercial FEM code, ABAQUS/Explicit. Then, a smooth tire was simulated for free rolling, driving, braking and cornering situations using the improved friction model and the Coulomb friction model, and the effect of the friction models on the slip, the frictional energy distribution and the cornering force and moment was analyzed. For the free rolling, the driving and the braking situations, the improved friction model and the Coulomb friction model resulted in similar profiles of the slip and the frictional energy distributions although the magnitudes were different. The slips obtained from the simulations were in a good correlation with experimental data. For the cornering situation, the Coulomb friction model with the coefficient of friction of 1 or 2 resulted in lower or higher cornering forces and moments than experimental data. In addition, in contrast to experimental data it did not result in a maximum cornering force and a decrease of the cornering moment for the increase of the speed. However, the improved friction model resulted in similar cornering forces and moments to experimental data, and it resulted in a maximum cornering force and a decrease of the cornering moment for the increase of the speed, showing a good correlation with experimental data.
In this research any abnormal motion of a vehicle is detected by utilizing the difference between the reference and actual yaw velocities as sell as the information on vehicle slip angle and slip angular velocity. This information is then used as a criterion for execution of the yaw moment control. A yaw moment control algorithm based on the brake control is proposed for improving the directional stability of the vehicle. The controller executes brake controls to provide each wheel with adequate brake pressures, which generate the needed yaw moment. It is shown that the proposed yaw moment control logic can provide excellent cornering capabilities even on low friction roads. This active control scheme can prevent a vehicle from behaving abnormally, and can assist normal drivers in coping with dangerous situations as well as experienced drivers.
Yaw moment control algorithm for improving stability of a vehicle in cornering is presented in this paper. A change of the yaw moment according to an increment in brake ship at each wheel is examined and reflected in the control algorithm. This control algorithm computes the target yaw velocity as the vehicle motion desired by the driver for directional stability control in cornering and it makes the actual yaw velocity follow the target one. The yaw moment control was achieved by brake slip control and simple brake slip control logic was introduced in this paper.

A new Fuzzy sliding mode controller is proposed to improve the cornering performance of the four wheel hybrid vehicles. The Fuzzy sliding mode control is applied for the control of rear motor and EHB (Electro-Hydraulic Brake) to improve the cornering performance. The modeling of the automobile is simplified that each of the two wheels is modeled as two degrees of freedom object and the friction coefficient between the wheel and the ground is assumed to be constant. The output of the Fuzzy sliding mode algorithm is the direct yaw moment for the rear wheels, which compensates for the slip angle. Through the simulations using ADAMS and MATLAB Simulink, the cornering performance of the proposed algorithm is compared to the conventional PID to show the superiority of the proposed algorithm. In the simulation experiments, the J-Turn and single lane change are used for each of the Fuzzy sliding mode algorithm and PID controller with the optimal gains which are tuned empirically.

The 4WS system is usually developed to improve the maneuverability at low speed and the straight line stability at high speed, but it is found to have the severe understeer characteristics at high speed. Therefore a 4WS vehicle requires to turn the steering wheel much more than a 2WS vehicle at high speeds even a driver goes through the same curved road. In this study, to enhance the cornering performance of the 4WS vehicle at high speed, a DYC 4WS system is proposed based on the nonlinear 4WS system and direct yaw moment control system. Especially the proposed DYC 4WS system is able to realize a zero side slip angle for vehicles and a cornering performance similar to the 2WS vehicle at high speed.

With the recent advancement of control method and battery technology, the electric vehicle have been researched to replace the conventional vehicle with electric vehicle with the view point of the environmental concerns and energy conservation. An electric vehicle which is equipped with the independent front steering system and in-wheel motors has advantage in terms of control. For example, the different torque which generated by left and right wheels directly can make yaw moment and the independent steering using outer wheel control is able to reduce the sideslip angle. Using of independent steering and driving system, the 4 wheel electric vehicle can improve a performance better than conventional vehicle. In this paper, we consider the method for improving the cornering performance of independent front steering system and in-wheel motor used electric vehicle with the compensated outer wheel angle and direct yaw moment control. Simulation results show that the method can improve the cornering performance of 4 wheel electric vehicle. We also apply the steering motor failure to steer the vehicle turned by the torque difference without steering. This paper describes an independent front steering and driving, consist of three parts; Vehicle Model, Control Algorithm for independent steering and driving and simulation. First, vehicle model is application of TruckSim software for independent front steering and 4 wheel driving. Second, control algorithm describes the reduced sideslip and direct yaw moment method in view of cornering performance. Last is simulation and verification.
This paper presents yaw moment control for modification of steering characteristic in rear-driven vehicle with front in-wheel motors (IWMs). The proposed control algorithm is designed to modify yaw rate response of the test vehicle. General approach for modification of steering characteristic is to define the desired yaw rate and track the yaw rate. This yaw rate tracking method can cause the chattering problem because of the IWM actuator response. Large overshoot and settling time in IWM torque response can amplify the oscillation in control input and yaw rate. To resolve these problems, open-loop IWM controller for cornering agility was designed to modify the understeer gradient of the vehicle. The proposed algorithm has been investigated via the computer simulations and the vehicle tests. The performance evaluation has been conducted on dry asphalt using E-segment test vehicle. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been compared to general yaw rate tracking algorithm in the vehicle tests. It has been shown that the proposed control law improved the cornering agility without chattering problem.
This paper describes development of 4 Wheel Drive (4WD) Electric Vehicle (EV) based driving control algorithm for severe driving situation such as icy road or disturbance. The proposed control algorithm consists three parts : a supervisory controller, an upper-level controller and optimal torque vectoring controller. The supervisory controller determines desired dynamics with cornering stiffness estimator using recursive least square. The upper-level controller determines longitudinal force and yaw moment using sliding mode control. The yaw moment, particularly, is calculated by integration of a side-slip angle and yaw rate for the performance and robustness benefits. The optimal torque vectoring controller determines the optimal torques each wheel using control allocation method. The numerical simulation studies have been conducted to evaluated the proposed driving control algorithm. It has been shown from simulation studies that vehicle maneuverability and lateral stability performance can be significantly improved by the proposed driving controller in severe driving situations.
The failure mode of steel road wheels in a vehicle is cracks from ventilation hole through to contact plane on steel wheel's disc plate. But a number of cracks of Cornering Fatigue Limit Test is on contact plane near to wheel nut mounting area, even though it's satisfied with specified cycles. So this paper searches out causes to improve durability and reliability of C.F.T by uni-axial bending moment test. The verified cause is a "fretting" on contact area of steel wheel. In result, this paper suggests a solution to prevent a fretting by inserting a damping shim, 0.7mm between steel wheel contact areas. Therefore this paper makes it possible to move crack position of C.F.T in steel wheel from contact plane to vehicle's failure mode.
Conventionally, 2WS is used for vehicle steering, which can only steering front wheel. In case of trying to high speed lane change or cornering through this kind of vehicle equipped 2WS, it may occur much of Yaw moment. On the other hand, 4WS makes decreasing of Yawing Moment, outstandingly, so it is possible to support vehicle movement stable. And conventional ABS and TCS can only possible to control the longitudinal movement of braking equipment and drive which can only available to control of longitudinal direction. There after new braking system ESP was developed, which controls both of longitudinal and lateral, with adding of the function of controlling Active Yaw Moment. On this paper, we show about not only designing of improved braking and steering system through establishing of the integrated control system design of 4WS and ESP but also designing of the system contribute to precautious for advanced vehicle stability problem.
