The on-the-fly energy release per fission (OTFK) model is implemented in STREAM to continuously update the Kappa values during the depletion calculation. The explicit neutron and photon energy distribution, which has not been considered in previous STREAM versions, is incorporated into the existing on-the-fly model. The impacts of the modified OTFK model with explicit neutron and photon heating in STREAM on the power distribution, fuel temperature, and other core parameters during depletion with feedback calculations are studied using several problems from the VERA benchmark suit. Overall, the explicit heating calculation provides a better power map for the feedback calculations particularly when strong gamma emitters are present. Generally, the fuel temperature decreases when neutron and photon heating is employed because fission neutrons and gamma rays are transported away from their points of generation. This energy release model in STREAM indicates that gamma energy accounts for approximately 9.5%-10% of the total energy released, and approximately 2.4%-2.6% of the total energy released will be deposited in the coolant for the VERA 5, NuScale, and Yonggwang Unit 3 2D cores.

Several reactor physics commissioning experiments were conducted to obtain the neutronic parameters at the beginning of the G.A. Siwabessy Multi-purpose Reactor (RSG-GAS) operation. These parameters are essential for the reactor to safety operate. Leveraging the experimental data, this study evaluated the calculated core reactivity, control rod reactivity worth, integral control rod reactivity curve, and fuel reactivity. Calculations were carried out with Serpent 2 code using the latest neutron cross-section data ENDF/B-VIII.0. The criticality calculations were carried out for the RSG-GAS first core up to the third core configuration, which has been done experimentally during these commissioning periods. The excess reactivity for the second and third cores showed a difference of 510.97 pcm and 253.23 pcm to the experiment data. The calculated integral reactivity of the control rod has an error of less than 1.0% compared to the experimental data. The calculated fuel reactivity value is consistent with the measured data, with a maximum error of 2.12%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the RSG-GAS reactor core model is in good agreement to reproduce excess reactivity, control rod worth, and fuel element reactivity.
The sandwich structure, consisting of a core and a face sheet, is used for lightweight structural application. Generally, cellular structures like honeycomb, foam, and lattice structures are utilized for the core. Among these, lattice structures have several advantages over other types of structures. In other studies, curved lattice structures were reported to have higher mechanical properties than straight structures by converting shear stresses acting on the structure into compressive stresses. Moreover, the addition of vertical struts can have a positive effect on the mechanical properties of the lattice structure. For the purpose, two lattice structures with Circle Arch (CC) and Circular Arch with a vertical column (CC_C) were studied, which were fabricated by using selective laser sintering was conducted. The result showed that CC_C has dramatic performance improvements in specific strength, modulus, and strain energy density compared to CC, confirming that vertical struts played a significant role in the lattice core. Finite element analysis was employed to determine the cause of the stress behavior of CC and CC_C. This study is expected to help design structurally superior lattice cores and sandwich structures.

Test constructions were performed at 3 sites to investigate ways for maximizing performance of geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavements known to reduce reflection cracking and rutting. Problems during construction operation which can affect bonding shear strength of the geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavements were defined and the construction conditions were intentionally made during the test constructions. Both immediately and 1year after the test constructions, cores were obtained from positions with good and bad construction conditions and then bonding shear strength tests were performed to be compared each other. Rules to be kept at construction sites were suggested to improve performance of the geogrid-reinforced asphalt pavements.

The world's most extensive and active deltas, Louisiana's wetlands, are deteriorating rapidly due to multiple stressors such as the discharge of the Mississippi River, sea-level rise, and coastal retreat, the substantial but spatially and temporally variable impacts. However, the ecological and anthropogenic histories, the mode of environmental changes on a multi-millennial timescale have not been thoroughly documented. This study, a palynology-based multiproxy analysis, investigates hydrological, geological, geochemical, and anthropogenic impacts on southern Louisiana wetlands and a variety of external forcing agents influencing ecological succession. Sediment cores extracted from a small pond on a mangrove-dominate island near Port Fourchon, Louisiana, USA yielded a 4,000-year record. The site has been transformed from freshwater to saline water environments, to a mangrove dominant island over the late Holocene. The multivariate principal component analysis identified the relative strength of external drivers responsible for each ecological shift. The Mississippi River delta cycle (lobe switching) was the dominant driver of ecosystem changes during the late Holocene, while relative sea-level rise, tropical cyclones, climate, and anthropogenic effects have been the main drivers late in the site's history.

Modularization in a high-rise building is different from a small building, as it is exposed to more lateral forces like wind and earthquakes. The integrity, robustness, and overall stability of the modules and their performance is based on the joining techniques and strong structural systems. High lateral stiff construction structures like concrete shear walls and frames, braced steel frames, and steel moment frames are used for the stability of high-rise modular buildings. Similarly, high-rise stick-built buildings have concrete cores and perimeter frames for lateral load strength and stiffness. Methods for general steel-concrete connections are available in many works of literature. However, there are few modular-related papers describing this connection system in modular buildings. This paper aims to review the various research and practice adopted for steel-to-concrete connections in construction and compare the methods between stick-built buildings and modular buildings. The literature review shows that the practice of steel module-to-concrete core connection in high-rise modular buildings is like outrigger beams-to-concrete core connection in stick-built framed buildings. This paper concludes that further studies are needed in developing proper guidelines for a steel module-to-concrete core connection system in high-rise modular buildings.

Granitic regolith profile in Goseong, southern Korea, reveals various types of corestones from unweathered round fresh rocks to decomposed rock cores with unweathered spheroidal rock-layers on outer surface, deep weathering profile with 10m in depth, and red saprolite usually cited as related to high temperature climatic environment. In respect of this optical features such as the depth and the color of the profile, Goseong granitic profile may be regarded as products of paleoclimate with more high temperature and humidity than the present. But it is revealed that halloysite is a predominant clay mineral in upper part as well as lower part by XRD analysis. Halloysite is dominant mineral in hydrothermal alteration milieu. The leaching rate of chemical components is up to 97%, very high compared to common granite profiles with 60~70% in Korean peninsula. So, it is assumed that granitic red regolith in Goseong is a product of hydrothermal alteration, not meteoric weathering.
This article addresses the quasi-static analysis of time-dependent honeycomb sandwich plates with various geometrical properties based on the bending analysis of elastic honeycomb sandwich plates employing a time function with three unknown coefficients. The novel point of the developed method is that the responses of viscoelastic honeycomb sandwich plates under static transversal loads are clearly formulated in the space and time domains with very low computational costs. The mechanical properties of the sandwich plates are supposed to be elastic for the faces and viscoelastic honeycomb cells for the core. The Boltzmann superposition integral with the constant bulk modulus is used for modeling the viscoelastic material. The shear effect is expressed using the first-order shear deformation theory. The displacement field is predicted by the product of a determinate geometrical function and an indeterminate time function. The simple HP cloud mesh-free method is utilized for discretizing the equations in the space domain. Two coefficients of the time function are extracted by answering the equilibrium equation at two asymptotic times. And the last coefficient is easily determined by solving the first-order linear equation. Numerical results are presented to consider the effects of geometrical properties on the displacement history of viscoelastic honeycomb sandwich plates.
This research aims to simulate and investigate the efficiency of strengthening damaged concrete columns using concrete jacketing. The numerical program included unjacketed reference column made of ordinary RC concrete had a cross-sectional dimension of (100×100) mm and 560 mm long reinforced concrete. These cores were damaged by loading them with approximately 60% of their actual ultimate load capacities as a service load. Then, column specimens were strengthened by applying two types of self-compacting concrete SCC jacketing, which were 25 and 30 mm thick, on all four sides. Exposed to external loads at different directions vertically and horizontally simulate to the seismic load. The 3D Finite Element (FE) simulation is used to predict of three structural criteria that were selected and evaluated (deflection, stress, cracks). The results show that the failure of the strengthening columns is interesting and corresponds to the characteristics of the cracks formed in the concrete section, which was documented numerically using 3D Finite Element (FE). A significant improvement of deflection has been noted at the values at the top SECTION of columns compared to the reference sample reaching an average of up to 36.6% when using a 25 mm thick SCC-3500 jacket.
Korea is rapidly entering into an aging society, and an increasing socioeconomic burden related to prostate cancer is inevitable. Therefore, the need for early detection and accurate diagnosis of prostate cancer is becoming increasingly critical. Ideally, a biopsy should accurately detect cancers using a minimum number of cores. However, as prostate cancer is often indistinguishable on imaging, image-guided targeted biopsies alone are insufficient for diagnosis. After decades of trial and error, the diagnosis of prostate cancer relies heavily on systematic biopsy, which is characterized by random and repetitive core acquisition throughout the gland. This review will provide an overview of the historical aspects of prostate cancer diagnosis. Moreover, the review will also address the general considerations involved in prostate biopsy, and discuss the periprocedural management of the patients.
