  • The pressure fluctuation on the surface of a submerged body has been recognized as a dominant noise source. There have been many studies concerning the flow induced noise on a flat plate. However, the noise over an axisymmetric body has not been well reported. This paper addresses the way in which we have investigated the mechanism of noise generation due to an axisymmetric body. The associated experiments and signal processing methods are introduced. A 3-dimensional axisymmetric body whose length and diameter were 2 m and 10.4 cm, was prepared as a test specimen. The wall pressure on the surface of the body was measured in a large scale low noise wind tunnel at KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery and Metals). To measure the wall pressure, we used two microphone arrays which were tangential and normal to the flow. Based on the measured signal, frequency-wavenumber spectrum which explains the structure of turbulence noise, was estimated. Tangential to the flow, there exists convective ridge at a relatively higher wavenumber region; this can cause spatial aliasing. To circumvent this problem, the cross spectrum was interpolated. The interpolation has been performed by unwrapping the phase and smoothing the cross spectrum. The phase unwrapping was done based on the Corcos model; the phase of cross spectrum decreases linearly with the distance between microphones. Aforementioned signal processings are possible by employing the experimental results that the estimated wavenumber spectrum quite resembles the Corcos model. We try to modify the Corcos model which is applicable to the flat plate, by altering the magnitude of cross spectrum to fit the experimental data more accurately. We proposed that this wavenumber spectrum model is suitable for the 3-dimensional axisymmetric body. Normal to the flow, there exists a little correlation between signals of different microphones. The circumferential wavenumber spectrum contains uniform power along the wavenumbers.

  • This paper presents the analytical method for predicting turbulence- induced noise in the multilayered cylinder composed of an outer hose, an inner fluid and an internal core. It is assumed that an infinite axisymmetric cylinder is located horizontally in water with free stream velocity and the turbulent boundary layer (TBL) surrounding the outer hose is fully developed and homogeneous. The transfer function at the core surface due to the propagation of the pressure fluctuation within the TBL is formulated using the linearized Navier-Stockes equation for solid and fluid. In the estimation of the energy spectrum of wall pressure fluctuation, the empirical formula proposed by Strawderman based on the Corcos model is used. A general algorithm for the calculation of the pressure level at the surface of a core, that is, turbulence- induced noise, is presented. Through the detailed numerical simulation, it is found that the major noise mechanism is the propagation of the bulge wave along hose.

  • The noise itself that affects the sensor array is defined as the noise which happens in the place where the system is installed and the circumference noise which comes from the ocean. The array structure for detecting acoustic signal in the underwater effected turbulent layer flow noise. In this paper to design the conformal array spectral density function was introduced and several cases of flow induced noise which affect transfer function were simulated. Modified Corcos wall pressure model was used as turbulent boundary layer flow noise. The effect of noise has been reduced as integrated sum of transfer function has been reduced by decreasing elastomer thickness and density when kx is in low wave number area. Also the characteristics of transfer function by Corcos wall pressure displayed the product of frequency density function. This simulation results can be applied to the conformal array design in unmmaned underwater vehicle in the near future.

  • Recent developments in the prediction of the contribution of windnoise to the interior SPL have opened a realm of new possibilities in terms of i) how the convective and acoustic sources terms can be identified, ii) how the interaction between the source terms and the side glass can be described and finally iii) how the transfer path from the sources to the interior of the vehicle can be modelled. This work discusses in details these three aspects of wind noise simulation and recommends appropriate methods to deliver required results at the right time based on i) simulation and experimental data availability, ii) design stage at which a decision must be made and iii) time available to deliver these results. Several simulation methods are used to represent the physical phenomena involved such as CFD, FEM, BEM, FE/SEA Coupled and SEA. Furthermore, a 1D and 2D wavenumber transformation is used to extract key parameters such as the convective and the acoustic component of the turbulent flow from CFD and/or experimental data whenever available. This work focuses on the validation of the wind noise source characterization method and the vibro-acoustic models on which the wind noise sources are applied.

  • Underwater acoustic sensor array can detect acoustic signal in underwater and the sensor array can be mounted in each left, right or front side of the UUV(Unmanned Underwater Vehicle). The sensor array could be conformal array and effected turbulent boundary layer flow noise. Therefore, in this paper numerical simulations were performed to know the how the outer flow noise affect the hydrophone which embedded in the elastomer. Corcos wall pressure model was used as turbulent boundary layer flow noise and this model was applied to the frequency density function. Characteristics of transfer function according the kx wave number were simulated and design parameters were thickness of elastomer, density, and modulus of elasticity. Based on the simulation results when increasing the thickness of elastomer noise reduction was increased. This results can be applied to the design of conformal array of UUV.

  • It is essential to analyze structural vibrations due to turbulent wall pressure fluctuations over a body surface which moves through a fluid, because the vibrations can be a severe source of noise affecting to passengers in airplanes and SONAR performance. Generally, this kind of problems have been solved for very simplified models, e.g. plates, which can be applied to the wavenumber domain analysis. In this paper, a finite element modeling of the walt pressure fluctuations is investigated, which can be applied to those over arbitrary smooth surfaces. It is found that the modeled wall pressure fluctuation at nodes becomes uncorrelated at higher frequencies and at lower flow speeds, and the response is over-estimated due to the aliased power. Then the frequency range available for uncorrelated loading model and two power correction schemes are presented.
