Recently, technology growth and globalization of the market bring the age of knowledge based economy. These competitive environment require that the firms should cooperate among industry, academia, and institute. Cooperation between firms and universities for research and development is one of the most important business strategy in improving their business competences. This paper studied the factors of the firm involvement in the cooperation between firms and universities for technology development. To analyze the involvement factors, the data of 'R&D activity survey' of Ministry of Science and Technology(MOST) were used. Based on results of the analysis, 6 factors such as firm size, the years of firms, ratio of the researchers, the ratio of collaborative investments, the ratio of new product development, and the number of property right were significant. As the technology cooperation get flourished, the results of this research is expected to play a meaningful role as an basic data for developing the cooperation between industry and academia policy for technology development.
In this paper, we consider a cooperation between firms and universities based on KOITA's and KIET's research results which is a research organ about the obstacle factors of the cooperation between firms and universities. Also, we consider the motivation of a cooperation with a technology innovation based on STEPI's research results. From the basis on the results, we will suggest a new cooperation strategy between firms and universities. We will propose a new development cooperation model(strategy) which is included the infra(hardware), that is implemented for the company's support, and the networking between cooperation components and expert management man-power.
A aim of this study is to show that trust formed among actors in clusters effects on the innovation for firms. This paper finds that trust is not enough formed. firms feel trust in relationship between firms and universities and between firms and research institutes. However, trust not to be formed in relationship between firm and public agencies and between firms and other firms. By mean of the finding, the various network types which can facilitate trust must be made by policy support.

The number of collaboration professors has significantly increased since the last decade, along with rapid technological developments and the necessity of entrepreneurial universities. Despite the expansion of collaboration professor recruitment, few empirical studies have examined the contribution of collaboration professors to university-industry collaboration. In particular, we do not have sufficient knowledge about the role of collaboration professors in the start-ups of undergraduate students, which is one of major duties of these professors. Following previous studies, this study constructs panel data of 203 universities explaining the proportions of collaboration professors, activities of undergraduate students, support of universities for students preparing new firms, and attributes of universities from 2017 to 2019. The results indicate that the percentage of collaboration professors is not statistically related with the start-ups of undergraduate students, whereas that of full-time professors working at organizations specializing in start-ups is positively and significantly associated with the number of new firms of undergraduate students. In addition, the percentage of students who had attended the start-up camps and the availability of financial support from universities for students who attempt to create new firms positively influence the start-ups of undergraduate students.

Researchers analyzed various factors influencing the performance of technology-based firms. On the other hand, there have been few studies on the relationship between the innovation intermediaries and the performance of technology-based firms in Korea. This study identified the firms' capabilities, institutional and environmental factors in the light of the literature. A total of 2,313 technology-based firms in Techno-parks, business incubator of public institutes and universities were surveyed. Of these, 110 respondents were used for empirical analysis. OLS techniques were applied to analyze the data. Technology diffusion policy can be defined as the role of government in linking knowledge production with usage. It has an importance due to the fact that linking knowledge between the producing agent and using agent does not automatically occur. If knowledge produced by an R&D agent is not used by somebody else, the knowledge may deteriorate to a social loss since knowledge production consumes a considerable degree of social resources. Explicit technology diffusion policies are not found in Korea. There we, however, a number of implicit policies to promote technology diffusion, mainly by promoting cooperation among universities, industries and research institutes. Government R&D programs have provided incentives for cooperative research projects, and many government sponsored institutes have been assigned the role of technology assistance for small and medium sized firms. Nevertheless, diffusion policies remain weak in comparison to other innovation and technology policies. This is reflected in the relatively small scale of government support for technology diffusion programs. In addition, there is no systematic approach between the different ministries for enhancing diffusion across technologies, institutions, sectors and regions. A comprehensive evaluation of government diffusion programs, which is necessary for improving policy and program design, is lacking. Enhancing the diffusion of technology in Korea will require the strengthening of policies at different levels, including; 1) increasing the orientation of science and technology policies towards diffusion; 2) increasing the scale of existing diffusion programs; 3) developing new diffusion programs, in particular sector-specific or manpower training programs; 4) developing policies to encourage a culture of cooperation that can facilitate technology diffusion; and 5) carrying out substantial policy research to develop diffusion policies.

This study attempts to explore the activities and performance of industry-academic cooperation with the perspective of the firm that has not been systematically addressed in the previous research. To do this, a survey of university family companies across the country was conducted to draw factors that influence the competencies of firms and universities on the performance of industry-academic cooperation and to compare differences by region. The main results of the study are as follows. First, it was found that the knowledge and technologies that universities retain and the active participation of companies in the activities of university-academic cooperation were the most important contributors to the corporate achievements in industry-academic cooperation. Second, when divided into the Seoul metropolitan area and non-capital area, it was found that there was a difference in the capabilities and performance of industry-academic cooperation between the two regions. Third, it was found that there were significant differences in the capabilities and performance of industry-academic cooperation in five areas. These findings suggest that industry-academic cooperation projects specialized for each region is necessary to enhance the effectiveness of industry-academic cooperation.

In this paper, we analyze features of radical innovative businesses using their patents. Although patents have been used to evaluate outcomes of businesses from the 1980s, it is challenging to use patents for radical innovations. We examined the possibility of taking advantage of patents for an indicator that represents a radical innovation in pharmaceutical industry. To this end, we collected FDA approval data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and patent data of 18 pharmaceutical companies. For analysis, we utilized the network centrality analysis and Wilcoxon signed ranked test, which is a non-parametric statistical hypothesis test used to compare two related samples. We observed that a radical innovative company typically cooperates with other research groups, such as universities and companies, and acts as a hub for connectivity in pharmaceuticals. Also, we found that there are differences in centrality between radical firms and non-radical firms. Thus, we expect that the results of this study will help in developing strategies for research and development of pharmaceutical companies and identifying factors affecting radical innovation in the future.
