  • Linear permanent magnet synchronous motors utilize high-energy product permanent magnet to produce high thrust, velocity and acceleration. Such motors are finding applications requiring high positioning accuracy and speed response, for example, machine tools, in the absence of mechanical gears and ball screw systems. A disadvantage of the linear motors is high power loss in comparison with rotary motors. For the application of the linear motors to machine tools, it is required to use water coolers and to improve the thermal behavior through insulation and structure optimization or control strategies. This paper presents the function of the secondary part of the linear synchronous motor as to the thermal behavior and the improving method. The result shows cooling pipe combined with an insulation layer is a suitable design for improving of the thermal behavior.

  • A condensation heat transfer model is essential to accurately predict the performance of the passive containment cooling system (PCCS) during an accident in an advanced light water reactor. However, most of existing models tend to predict condensation heat transfer very well for a specific range of thermal-hydraulic conditions. In this study, a new correlation for condensation heat transfer coefficient (HTC) is presented using machine learning technique. To secure sufficient training data, a large number of pseudo data were produced by using ten existing condensation models. Then, a neural network model was developed, consisting of a fully connected layer and a convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm, DenseNet. Based on the hold-out cross-validation, the neural network was trained and validated against the pseudo data. Thereafter, it was evaluated using the experimental data, which were not used for training. The machine learning model predicted better results than the existing models. It was also confirmed through a parametric study that the machine learning model presents continuous and physical HTCs for various thermal-hydraulic conditions. By reflecting the effects of individual variables obtained from the parametric analysis, a new correlation was proposed. It yielded better results for almost all experimental conditions than the ten existing models.

  • Conventional direct current (DC) rotating machines are usually used for crane and press machine using high torque in metal and steel industries, because of a constant output power along variable rotating speed. A general DC motor with permanent field magnets could not increase a magnetic flux density at a gap between armature coils and field magnets. However, a superconducting DC motor has field magnets composed with high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils and it could increase the magnetic flux density at the gap to over 10 times than those of a general DC motor by control the excitation current into HTS coils. The superconducting DC motor could be operated with extremely high torque and constant output power at a low rotational speed. In this paper, a 500 W superconducting DC rotating machine was conceptually designed with a LN2 (Liquid Nitrogen) cooling method and the operation characteristics results of HTS field magnets were presented. The two no-insulation HTS magnets for a 500 W superconducting DC rotating machine were fabricated. The excitation current for the HTS magnets could be controlled from 0 to 40 A. This test results will be available to design large-sized HTS magnets for a number of hundred kW class superconducting DC rotating machine under LN2 cooling system.

  • The role of current lead in high-temperature superconducting synchronous machine (HTSSM) is to function as a power supply by connecting the power supply unit at room temperature with the HTS field coils at cryogenic temperature. Such physical and electrical connection causes conduction and Joule-heating losses, which are major thermal losses of HTSSM rotors. To ensure definite stability and economic feasibility of HTS field coils, quickly and smoothly cooling down the current lead is a key design technology. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a novel concept of a cooling anchor to enhance the cooling performance of a metal current lead. The technical concept of this technology is the simultaneously chilling and supporting the current lead. First, the structure of the current lead and cooling anchor were conceptually designed for field coils for a 1.5 MW-class HTSSM. Then, the effect of this installation on the thermal characteristics of HTS coils was investigated by 3D finite element analysis.

  • Cooling characteristics for the three type spindles with high frequency motor are studied. For the analysis, three dimensional models are built considering heat transfer characteristics such as natural and forced convection coefficients. Unsteady-state temperature distributions and thermal deformations according to the cooling conditions are analyzed by using the finite element method.

  • Solar energy has been experiencing renewed interest because of the recent economical crisis in Korea. Absorption cooling is one of the promising solar energy utilization technologies. In this study the dynamic performance of a solar driven absorption cooling machine(SDACM) was numerically investigated. The simulated machine is a commercially available water/LiBr single effect absorption chillers driven by hot water from solar collectors. The present study has been directed to investigate the dynamic behavior of a solar cooling system including an absorption chiller, solar collector, a hot water storage tank, fan coil units, and the air-conditioned space. The operation of the system was simulated for 9 hours in varying operation conditions. The variation of temperature and concentration in the system components, and that of heat transfer rates in the system were obtained. It was also found that the room temperature was maintained near the desired value by controlling the mass flow rate of hot water.

  • This study is to evaluate the tool life of portable beveler which have various cooling system. It was compared with 3 different bevelers which has each other cooling system. Beveler A has no cooling system, beveler B has the cooling system for only inside of body, and beveler C has the cooling system for both the cutter and inside of body. The temperature of beveler A cutter surface had been continuously increasing as processing, but the rising tendency of temperature of beveler B cutter surface has slightly changed. In case of beveler C, the temperature is maintained. The tool life of beveler C is about 105m which is around 400% of beveler A(25m), and around 130% of beveler B(80m).

  • Basic design of a solar driven absorption cooling machine(SDACM) with a cooling capacity of 5 USRT was carried out. The SDACM is a single effect cycle driven by low temperature hot water from solar collectors. The SDACM design data were calculated by the steady state simulation program which was developed in this study The variation of COP and cooling capacity of the SDACM were investigated at different off-design conditions. Both the cooling capacity and the system COP were improved with decreasing cooling water temperature. If hot water temperature was increased, the cooling capacity was improved but the system COP was found to be decreased. The decrease of the system COP were basically caused by increased thermal loads in the system components.

  • The continuous casting is primarily a heat-extraction process in which the heat transfer at various cooling zones profoundly influences quality of products. So development of numerical model is necessarily needed for more specific and clear investigations upon heat transfer mechanism at mold and secondary cooling zones. In this study, heat transfer coefficients which show the characteristic of heat transfer mechanism in mold are calculated for more exact analysis with temperature measured in bloom mold using optimal algorithm, and finally the validity of cooling conditions at secondary cooling zone actually used at field fur 30 Ton bloom type continuous casting of 0.187%C is investigated. From the results of solidification analysis, the characteristic of bloom mold shows a similar tendency with that of previous studies, and optimized cooling conditions for 0.187%C are presented.

  • In this study, during the injection molding process, a device was manufactured and evaluated that calculates a cooling time by measuring a vibration signal generated from a mold using an acceleration. The last two parts, one of which has a large magnitude change in the measured vibration signal of a mold, were divided into a cooling start section (paking end section) and a mold opening section, and the time difference at the relevant points was calculated as the cooling time. The cooling time was monitored on a 5-inch light guide plate mold by applying the method. The manufactured device was attached to a fixed base of mold to measure the cooling time, and data was obtained remotely using Bluetooth technology. Then, the measured cooling time was compared with the cooling time set in the injection molding machine to evaluate the accuracy. As a result of the experiment, the cooling times measured by the devices were 15.675±0.024 sec, 20.637±0.014 sec and 25.623±0.079 sec of each conditions. Also, the measurement results were shown with errors of 0.655±0.044 sec, 0.637±0.014 sec, and 0.662±0.013 sec, respectively.
