Thermal Performance of the Microencapsulated PCM

  • Microencapsulated pcm (MPCM) particles are mixed with distilled water and utilized to evaluate its characteristics and performance as a thermal storage medium transporting heat. For the present study, tetradecane ($C_14$$H_30$, $T_m$=5.5$^{\circ}C$) is capsulated in the core, coated with the melamine for their surface. The size of particles is well-controlled under 10$\mu$m in the process of in-situ polymerization with melamine-formaldehyde resin. For the experiment, the concentractions of slurries are prepared for 20 wt%, 30 wt%, and 40 wt%. The results are compared with those of water and 100% tetradecane oil. The pure water and tetradecane start solidifying within 20 minutes after introducing cooling water into the thermal storage tank whose flow rates are varied by 125 cc/min, 250 cc/min, and 500 cc/min. However, MPCM slurries are required relatively longer period of time for their phase change than pure phase change materials. That is, the entrained MPCM particles restrict their heat transfer in terms of natural convection and conduction to them.

  • The investigation of microscopic precision in high speed endmilling is necessary for machinability evaluation, and the environmentally conscious machining technology have more important position in recent machining process. The microscopic precision of workpiece is influenced by machining environments variation as cutting fluid type and lubricant method. In this study, the cutting forces according to variation of cooling and lubrication are investigated by specially designed tool dynamometer. And the surface roughness, micro hardness and residual stress are evaluated according to machining environment. The characteristics of damaged layer in environmentally conscious machining and conventional machining using cutting fluid are compared experimentally.

  • In order to investigate the electrical properties of X-ray tube oils for insulating and cooling, the breakdown characteristics in temperature range of $20\sim100[^{\circ}C]$, that of AC breakdown in 0.5~2.5[mm] of gap length, we are made researches. The classification for the physical properties of oil for X-ray tube by FTIR and H-NMR experiments was confirmed to type of mineral oils. As for the dependance of breakdown characteristics due to electrode gap length, breakdown voltage was found nearly uniform by impurity effect according to the increase of gap. As a result the characteristics for AC breakdown, the dielectric strength was increased to $90[^{\circ}C]$ but decreased over $90[^{\circ}C]$ in the temperature range.

  • V-belt pulleys play a key role in driving cooling pump, oil pump, air-conditioner and so on by using an engine power. Precision deep drawing is one of the main processes for manufacturing the pulleys. Operation variables of the deep drawing equipment, called the setup parameter, must be re-determined whenever the specifications of pulley to be produced are changed. The defect rates during a setup of equipment and the working hours needed for the setup are almost dependent on workers' know-how. This study designs the program for easily determining setup conditions in pulley manufacturing process.

  • In this study, the specimens of SCM 22 H steel were quenched in oil and water baths at various agitation conditions in order to investigate the effects of quenchants and agitation conditions on the quench-hardening. A multi-channel temperature measurement apparatus was employed to obtain the cooling curves at several predetermined positions of specimens. Microstructural observation and hardness test were also carried out. Computer simulation of heat treating process was carried out using the modified finite difference method. Prediction of thermal history and hardness distribution by 2-dimensional computer analysis was in good agreement with the experimental results. It was found that the quantitative design of heat treating process can be made by the computer aided heat-treating analysis.

  • The demand of Gas Insulated Transformer(GIT) using $SF_6$ gas as insulating and cooling medium is being increased dramatically in the underground substation of urban area because it has the advantages of non-flammable and non-explosive, etc. This paper describes the structural features and advantages of the gas insulated transformer compare to an oil immersed transformer, and presents a brief overview of the consideration and technology which apply to $SF_6$ gas insulated transformer.

  • The electrical breakdown characteristics of the synthetic fluids No.2 of KS class VII used for insulating and cooling the materials for the ignition coil are studied. Also, Benzotriazole(BTA) as the streaming electrification suppressant additive is added to the oil, and the change of electrical properties due to different BTA concentration is investigated. To investigate the electrical characteristics, the breakdown strength of each specimen by an experiment for AC breakdown are analyzed. The breakdown strength of specimen by adding BTA is higher than virgin specimen in low e region, but lower than that in high region because of melting BTA. It is considered that the effective content of BTA as charge suppressant additive is about 10[ppm] from the results of AC breakdown.

  • In this research, GTA overlay welding system is developed for inside of straight pipes in various diameter. It can be applied to oil, ship building and plant industry, especially pipes connected to pressure vessels, for the purpose of cost reduction by cladding inside of pipes with corrosion and heat resistant alloys such as stainless steel or Inconel. Developed system consists of GTA power source, torch, wire feeding system, automatic arc length adjusting device, CCD camera and cooling unit. Two types of pipe inside overlay welding system are developed. One is for maximum 3m pipe length with 3 inch ~ 12 inch pipe outer diameter. Another type can be applied to maximum 12m pipe length with 7 ~ 24 inch OD. Developed system successfully produced inside cladded pipe and the results are shown through cross sectional images of the pipes.

  • The Alternative energy has lately attracted considerable attention due to the high oil price and environment problem. In this study, field test of facility for using the geothermal energy source from water-purifying device was constructed and monitoring devices are installed to estimate the efficiency of this system. Initial installation cost can be saved efficiently by connecting a heat pump system into the existing pumping well in site of water-purifying in Cheongju. One set of monitoring results during summer was presented and analyzed.

Optimization of Heat Exchanger Network in the Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage Process Integration

  • The Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) process is an enhanced method to extract oil from bitumen which involves surface and central process facilities. This paper describes the Central Process Facilities (CPF) of SAGD and proposes several retrofit plans to the Heat Exchanger Network (HEN). In this approach, the process integration scheme is applied to estimate the energy saving in HENs, and various cases are modeled in favor of a commercial simulator. Throughout this work, a minimum approach temperature of 10℃ is assumed. The results reveal that, due to the HEN optimization using process integration, the heating and cooling duties can be reduced to 29.68MW and 1.886MW, respectively. Compared with the Husky case, all cases considered in this study indicate a potential reduction of at least 6% in total cost, including investment and operation costs.
