  • Flexible two-phase thermosyphons are devices that can transfer large amounts of heat flux with boiling and condensation of working fluid resulting from small temperature differences. A flexible two-phase thermosyphon consists of a evaporator, an insulation unit, and a condenser. The working fluid inside the evaporator is evaporated by heating the evaporator in the lower part of the flexible two-phase thermosyphon and the evaporated steam rises to the condenser in the upper part to transfer heat in response to the cooling fluid outside the tube. The resultant condensed working fluid flows downward along the inside surface of the tube due to gravity. These processes form a cycle. Using R134a refrigerant as the working fluid of a loop type flexible two-phase thermosyphon heat exchanger, an experiment was conducted to analyse changes in boiling heat transfer performances according to differences in the temperature of the oil for heating of the evaporator, the temperature variations of the refrigerant, and the mass flows. According to the results of the present study, the circulation rate of the refrigerant increased and the pressure in the evaporator also increased proportionally as the temperature of the oil in the evaporator increased. In addition, the heat transfer rate of the boiler increased as the temperature of the oil in the evaporator increased.

  • Global warming has led to an increase in demand of eco-friendly vehicles, such as electric cars, for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and especially, regulating carbon dioxide generation. In addition, electric vehicles are equipped with an electric drive-type hermetic scroll compressor and a refrigerant, which exhibit current and future trends of using environmentally friendly refrigerants, including R-1234yf. In this study, polyol ester-based refrigeration oils are prepared via condensation esterification of polyol and fatty acids. The oils can be combined with R-1234yf refrigerant for applications in air conditioning and cooling systems of electric vehicles. The structure of synthetic polyol esters is confirmed via 1H-NMR and FT-IR spectrum analysis, and the composition of the polyol ester is analyzed via gas chromatogram analysis. Furthermore, kinematic viscosity, viscosity index, total acid value, pour point, and color are analyzed as fundamental physical properties of the synthetic polyol esters. The compatibility and chemical stability of the synthetic polyol ester combined with the R-1234yf refrigerant are obtained via high temperature and high pressure oil-resistant refrigerant tests. The changes in the oil color and catalyst activity are observed before and after the experiment to determine whether it is suitable as a refrigerator oil.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the usability of the used frying oil, which was extracted from soybean, as one of the alternative fuel of a small diesel engine. For the experiment, NO. 2 diesel oil [D], used frying oil [UF], and their volumetric blends were applied and analysis of the properties and compositions of the experimental fuels were conducted. A four cycle diesel engine with single cylinder, water cooling system, maximum output 8.1 ㎾/2,200 rpm was selected and a direct injection chamber and a precombustion chamber were attached alternately. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Engine power (BHP) were increased from 4.13~4.27㎾ to 9.08~9.15㎾ for diesel oil, from 4.05~4.19㎾ to 8.44~8.92㎾ for UF, and from 4.01~4.48㎾ to 8.69~9.16㎾ for blend fuel, as the engine speed increased from 1,000 rpm to 2,200 rpm. The BHP in case of the direct combustion chamber were fluctuated higher than those of the pre-combustion chamber. 2. With the engine speed increased, torque of the engine were increased from 39.50~40.80 N.m to 42.89 N.m, then decreased to 39.44~39.77 N.m for diesel oil, and increased from 38.73~40.04 N.m to 40.12~40.82 N.m then decreased as 36.53~38.76 N.m for UF. Torque of the blend fuels were increased from 38.75~41.76 N.m to 40.47~42.89 N.m then decreased to 37.73~39.78 N.m. There is no significant difference of torque between the type of combustion chambers. 3. The specific fuel consumption of the UF was increased about 20 percent depending on the engine speed variations. And in case of direct injection chamber, about 12 percent lower fuel consumption was observed than that of precombustion chamber. 4. NOx emission of the UF was higher than that of diesel oil at above 1,800rpm of the engine speed. In case of the direct injection chamber, NOx emission was revealed higher about 59 percent than that of the precombustion chamber, depending on the range of the engine speeds. 5. Smoke emission was decreased in case of UF compared with diesel oil on direct injection chamber. When using precombustion chamber smoke emission was a little higher than that of the direct injection chamber were showed at the engine speed range. 6. At all the engine speed range, exhaust gas temperatures were decreased 2~3$^{\circ}C$ for UF used engine compared with those of the diesel oil. The exhaust gas temperature of the direct injection chamber was higher than that of the precombustion chamber by 72$^{\circ}C$. 7. Unburnt materials remained in the cylinder in case of the pre-combustion chamber was smaller and softer than that of the direct combustion chamber. 8. The feasibility of the blend fuel B-1 and B-2 were verified as a direct combustion chamber was attached to the diesel engine, with respect to the power performance of the engine.

  • Oil is used in various industries, including the agricultural sector, food industry, and functional cosmetics. These oils are chemically unstable and prone to oxidation when exposed to oxygen, light, moisture, or high temperatures. Therefore, various attempts have been made to encapsulate them so that they are not exposed to such environments. When oil is injected into a refrigerant with greater density, the oil can be encapsulated as it rises due to buoyancy caused by the density difference. In this study, oil encapsulation was simulated to find the optimal conditions for operating equipment using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for multiphase flows. Water or serum can be used as a refrigerant. The viscosity of water is relatively small, and if it is used as a refrigerant, oil droplets can be produced well even if oil and water are continuously injected in the equipment. However, the viscosity of serum is very high, and if it is used, the oil is stretched out and does not leave the nozzle. The results show that when using serum as a cooling medium, oil encapsulation is possible if the injection is stopped for some time after instantaneous injection at high speed.

  • Fatty acid fraction rich in ${\omega}-3$ polyunsaturated fatty acids (${\omega}-3$, PUFA), especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) could be obtained by saponification of fish oil in ethanol containing alkali hydroxide followed by cooling and filtration of the resultant solution. Fatty acid compositions of fish oil and the concentrates suggest that the ratio of number of double bonds to carbon number in a fatty acid molecule is a more important factor than the degree of unsaturation or the chain length in determining the solubility of fatty acid salts in ethanol. Water content in ethano1 affected significantly the efficiency of the separation with respect to yield and content of EPA and DHA in the concentrates; the lower the water content, the higher the efficiency. It was, however, influenced little by cooling procedure and temperature which the saponified solution experienced during the crystallization. Under an optimal condition, the contents of EPA and DHA in the concentrate increased by 2.4 and 2.5 times, respectively, as compared with those in sardine oil.

  • The development of renewable energy technologies that can replace fossil fuels is environmentally important; however, such technologies must be economically feasible. Economic analyses are important for assessing new projects such as geothermal heating-cooling systems, given their large initial costs. This study analyzed the economics and carbon dioxide emissions of: a SCW (standing column well), a vertical closed loop boiler, a gas boiler, and an oil boiler. Life cycle cost analysis showed that the SCW geothermal heating-cooling system had the highest economic feasibility, as it had the highest cost saving and also the lowest carbon dioxide emissions. Overall, it appears that geothermal systems can save money when applied to large-scale controlled agriculture complexes and reclaimed land.

  • In this study, finite element analyses were performed by applying a stress ring and split die design to relieve the tensile stress acting on the die due to high surface pressure during warm-closed forging. The applied material was a yield-ratio-control-steel (YRCS). It was used without quenching or tempering after forging. In the case of stress rings design, the number of stress rings and the tolerance for shrink fit were different. Vertical and horizontal splits were applied for insert die split design. Case 5 die with three stress rings, 0.2 % shrink fit tolerance, and vertical split was selected as an effective die design for tensile stress reduction. Based on die stress reduction analyses, Case 5 die for warm-closed forging was produced and smooth forgeability was secured, making it possible to manufacture forging product of yoke with the required geometry. In addition, controlled cooling using warm forging heat was applied to secure mechanical properties of yokes. When oil cooling was used for direct controlled cooling after warm-closed forging, a relatively uniform Rockwell hardness distribution and high mechanical properties could be obtained.
