Desktop PC CPUs have been significantly required to be the necessity of thermal management while they have satisfied the extensive data and graphic processing requirements. So the cooling systems assembled with heat pipes embedded in a metal cooling plate, and fins are widely used in the desktop PC markets. Due to a number of demands such as the confined space of desktop PCs, higher heat density of CPUs, and acoustic noise, however, there is the main drive to improve continuously cooling systems. This paper presents the flow and thermal behavior of the cooling system by using the computational fluid dynamics(CFD) code.
The post-LOCA long term cooling (LTC) performance of the Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant (KSNPP) is analyzed for both small break loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCA) and large break LOCA at cold leg. The RELAP5/MOD3.2.2 beta code is used to calculate the LTC sequences based on the LTC plan of the Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plants (KSNPP). A standard input model is developed such that LOCA and the followed LTC sequence can be calculated in a single run for both small break LOCA and large break LOCA. A spectrum of small break LOCA ranging from \ulcorner.02 to 0.5 k2 of break area and a double-ended guillotine break are analyzed. Through the code calculations, the thermal-hydraulic behavior and the boron behavior are evaluated and the effect of the important action including the safety injection tank (SIT isolation and the simultaneous injection in LTC procedure is investigated. As a result, it is found that the sufficient margin is available in avoiding the boron precipitation in the core. It is also found that a further specific condition for the SIT isolation action need to be setup and it is recommended that the early initiation of the simultaneous injection be taken for larger break LTC sequences.
The effect of porous matrix on thermal fatigue behavior of 3D-orthogonally woven SiC/SiC composite was evaluated in comparison with that having relatively dense matrix. The porous matrix yields open air passages through its thickness which can be utilized for transpiration cooling. On the other hand, the latter matrix is so dense that the air passages are sealed. A quantity of the matrix was varied by changing the number of repetition cycles of the polymer impregnation pyrolysis (PIP). Strength degradation of composites under thermal cycling conditions was evaluated by the $1200^{\circ}C$/RT thermal cycles with a combination of burner heating and air cooling for 200 cycles. It was found that the SiC/SiC composite with the porous matrix revealed little degradation in strength during the thermal cycles, while the other sample showed a 25% decrease in strength. Finally it was demonstrated that the porous structure in 3D-SiC/SiC composite improved the thermal fatigue durability.
Effect of Nb addition on the phase transformation behavior was studied through continuous cooling transformation tests after reheating(reheating CCT) and deforming(deforming CCT) the 0.07%C-1.3%Mn-0.015%Ti-(0~0.08)% Nb steels. Transformation temperatures for deforming CCT were lower than those for reheating CCT, and the critical cooling rate for bainite transformation during deforming CCT was lower than that during reheating CCT. These enhanced hardenability for deforming CCT was considered to come from the sufficient solid solution of Nb in austenite during high temperature reheating before deformation. With Nb addition, the phase transformation temperature decreased, the bainite formation was enhanced, and the hardness of steel increased. Furthermore, these phenomena were more remarkable for deforming CCT than for reheating CCT. From the results, Nb-Ti bearing low carbon steel was considered to be a very favorable alloy system with good strength/toughness balance by recrystallization control rolling process.
Development of a feed drive system with high speed, positioning accuracy and thrust has been an important issue in modern automation systems and machine tools. Linear motors can be used as an efficient system to achieve such technical demands. By eliminating mechanical transmission mechanisms such as ball screw or rack-pinion, much higher speeds and greater acceleration can be achieved without backlash or excessive friction. However, an important disadvantage of linear motor system is its high power loss and heating up of motor and neighboring machine components on operation. For the application of the linear motors to precision machine tools an effective cooling method and thermal optimizing measures are required. In this paper presents an investigation into a thermal behavior of linear motor cooling plate. FVM employed to analyze the thermal behavior of the linear motor cooling plate, using the ANSYS-CFX.

For future multi-core processors, 3D integration is regarded as one of the most promising techniques since it improves performance and reduces power consumption by decreasing global wire length. However, 3D integration causes serious thermal problems since the closer proximity of heat generating dies makes existing thermal hotspots more severe. Conventional air cooling schemes are not enough for 3D multi-core processors due to the limit of the heat dissipation capability. Without more efficient cooling methods such as liquid cooling, the performance of 3D multi-core processors should be degraded by dynamic thermal management. In this paper, we examine the architectural impact of cooling methods on the 3D multi-core processor to find potential benefits of liquid cooling. We first investigate the thermal behavior and compare the performance of two different cooling schemes. We also evaluate the leakage power consumption and lifetime reliability depending on the temperature in the 3D multi-core processor.
Linear motors are efficient mechanism that offers high speed and positioning accuracy. By eliminating mechanical transmission mechanisms such as ball screw or rack-pinion, much higher speed and greater acceleration can be achieved without backlash or excessive friction. However, an important disadvantage of linear motor system is its high power loss and heating up of motor and neighboring machine components on operation. For the application of the linear motors to precision machine tools an effective cooling method and thermal optimizing measures are required. This paper presents an investigation into the thermal behavior of linear motors with the objective of deriving the optimum cooling conditions. To reach these goals several experiments were carried out, varying operating and cooling conditions. From the experimental results, this research proposed cooling conditions to improve the thermal characteristics of the linear motors.
An experimental study on the stratified fluids with water and silicon oil of same volume in the cavity with upper cooling surface was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics, heat transfer through the interface of fluids, and the applications of thermal behaviors in a square cavity. The experiments were performed with variation of initial temperature and cooling surface temperature. The temperature drop of oil was faster than that of water and freezing was initiated from the interface of oil and water and propagated downward. For the water above $4^{\circ}C$, the cooling rate was faster than that below $4^{\circ}C$ and showed almost same temperature distribution but for the water that of below $4^{\circ}C$, it showed the stable stratified temperature distribution. The lower the initial temperature and the higher the cooling surface temperature was, the longer the supercooling duration.
In this study, indoor thermal environment, resident behavior of operating cooling device, and thermal comfort vote are investigated at the living room of apartment during summertime in Seoul. Based on the results of the investigation, indoor air temperatures that residents turn air conditioners (especially for cooling load in this research) on and off were found out. The relationships between outdoor weather condition and the number of days using air conditioner, and whether operating patterns of the devices were also found out. The acceptable thermal comfort zone is figured out from these results, and this research is expected to contribute to the development of household air conditioner. The results can be summarized as the followings; Residents turned the air conditioner on at $29.76^{\circ}C$ of indoor air temperature, and $28.89^{\circ}C$ of $SET^\ast$. And turned the air conditioner off at $27.31^{\circ}C$ of indoor air temperature, and $23.70^{\circ}C$$SET^\ast$. Therefore, acceptable thermal comfort zone could be lied between these temperatures. If comfortable indoor thermal environment can be obtained with various architectural passive cooling techniques based on the results, energy consumption of cooling devices will be reduced.
The thermal behavior of a building in response to heat input from an active solar space heating system is analysed to determine the effect of the variable storage tank temperature on the cycling rate, on and off temperature of a heating cycle and on the comfort characteristics of room air temperature. A computer simulation of the system behavior has been performed and verified by comparisons with various parameters. Especially, this study is focused on the effect of the system's performance when subjected to dynamic cooling loads. The heat input to the absorption system is provided by an array of solar collectors that coupled to a thermal storage tank.
