  • Cool-season turfgrass is a rapidly increasing of usage for the revegetation of waterside slopes in dams, lakes and rivers. The purpose of this research is to identify the flooding tolerance of cool-season turfgrass with respect to the flooding periods of 0(control), 2, 4 and 6 days, respectively. The surface coverage ratio, turfgrass injury and soil moisture content were measured to assess the flooding tolerance of cool-season turfgrass. The increase in the flooding periods with 4 and 6 days resulted in the lower surface coverage ratio for cool-season turfgrass while no significant difference was found in the 2 days flooding when compared to 0 day (the control plot) flooding plot. In case of the turfgrass injury and the soil moisture content, however, the higher values were found with the increase of flooding periods in 2, 4 to 6 days. We observed that the higher the turfgrass injury and soil moisture content increased, the lower the surface covrage ratio decreased. In these regards, we also observed that the tolerance of cool season turfgrass were high in the 2 days flooding condition, medium in the 4 days flooding condition and low in the 6 days flooding condition. The flooding tolerance of cool-season turfgrass was gradually weakened in over 2 days flooding periods due to $O_2$ deficiency in the anaerobic soil condition. Therefore, we could suggest cool-season turfgrass within 2 days flooding periods for the revegetation of waterside slopes in dams, lakes and rivers.

  • To clarify the relationship between rice cool injury and the contents of silica and phosphorus in the soils and the rice plant, the investigation was carried out at ripening stage of rice from the different altitudes with different varieties throughout Yeongnam area. The rate of fertilized spikelets were decreased with elevation increase and the situation was distincted in the Japonica cross Indica hybrid varieties. The higher rates of $SiO_2/P_2 O_5$ content in the leaves and stems or lower rates of that in the soils show the higher fertilization rates. The result seems to be caused by the different solubility and uptakes of silica and by the different availability and transformation of phosphorus. A positive correlation was observed between the content of silica in rice plant and the fertilization rates. The fertilization rate in Japonica varieties was higher than that of Indica cross Japonica hybrid varieties in the case of the same content of silica in plant as far as observed, but the increasing rate of fertilized grains due to increase of silica content was prominented in the hybrid varieties which probably demand more silica. Within the certain limit of silica and phosphorus content in rice plant, the more uptaking of silica might lessen the cool injury.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the application of whole body vibration training (WBV) on the balance ability of patients with an American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) type C or D spinal cord injury. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: Twelve patients with spinal cord injury were enrolled in this study. The participants were randomized to an experimental group (n=6) or control group (n=6). The subjects in the experimental group received WBV exercise and the control group received the sham exercise without vibration. The vibrations were adjusted vertically to the patient at a 30 Hz frequency and 3 mm amplitude. The whole body vibration lasted for 16 minutes in total including 5-minutes warm-up and cool-down at the beginning and end of the program, respectively. The static sitting balance ability was assessed by measuring the postural sway while sitting on the force plate with the eyes opened or closed. Postural sway length was measured for 30 seconds with a self-selected comfortable position. Results: In the static balance test, the anterio-posterior, medio-lateral, and total postural sway length with the eyes open and closed was improved significantly before and after the intervention in the experimental group (p<0.05). The experimental group showed significantly more improvement than the control group (p<0.05). Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that WBV training has a positive effect on improving static sitting balance and enhanced control of postural sway in patients with an ASIA-C or D type spinal cord injury.

  • Winter turfgrass injury is one of the critical problems of many golf courses in Korea. Turfgrass loss from freezing injury due to low temperature leads to many types of damages including weed invasion, increased herbicide cost, increased soil erosion, and expensive re-establishment. Although Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) which is the most widely used among cool-season grasses in Korea is well known as cold tolerance species, freezing injuries to Kentucky bluegrass during winter are often found. Protecting the turfgrass crown is necessary to recover from low temperature stress in winter because shoots and roots can be recovered from the crown. Turf covers may protect the crowns from direct low temperatures and desiccation. Six different turf covers were installed to cover Kentucky bluegrass during a period of low temperatures. Turf covers had positive effects for spring green-up of Kentucky bluegrass based on the study. Applying any type of turf covers on Kentucky bluegrass resulted in an increase average and minimum temperature compared to the uncovered plot. Among turf covers, clear PVC film without holes produced the longest root length and the highest turfgrass quality.

  • It was proved that cold tolerance of rice plants at the young microspore stage was affected by water temperature and nitrogen application from the spikelet differentiation stage to the young microspore stage, and this mechanism could be explained in the point of view of pollen developmental physiology. The cold tolerance of rice plants at the young microspore stage was severely affected by water temperature (Previous water temperature) and nitrogen application(Previous nitrogen application) from the spikelet differentiation stage to the spikelet differentiation stage. Although the duration is only 10 days or so from the spikelet differentiation stage to the young microspore stage, these days are very important period to confirm the cold tolerance of rice plants at the young microspore stage. The higher previous water temperature up to $25^{\circ}C$ and the deeper previous water depth up to 10cm caused the more cold tolerance of rice plants. Water irrigation of 10cm before the cretical stage showed lower cool injury than that of water irrigation of 20cm during the critical stage. The preventive effect of cool injury by combined treatment of the deep water irrigation before and during the critical stage was not additive but synergistic. The cold tolerance of rice plants grown in previous heavy nitrogen level was rapidly decreased when nitrogen content of leaf blade at the young microspore stage was excessive over the critical nitrogen level. Nitrogen content of leaf blade at the changing point of cold tolerance was estimated as about 3.5% for Japonica cultivars and about 2.5% for Indica x Japonica cultuvars. It is considered that these critical nitrogen contents of leaf blade can be used as a index of the safe critical nitrogen level for the preventive practices to cool injury. It was summarized that increase of engorged pollens per anther by high previous water temperature resulted from the increase of number of differentiated microspores per anther, otherwise, the increase of engorged pollens by the decrease of previous nitrogen level was caused by the decrease of the number of aborted microspores per anther.

  • In 1980, the abnormal low temperature was lasted during the late stage of rice growing season, thus low temperature injury occurred severely. The severity of the injury and nutrition absorption were investigated. The result obtained were summarized as follows: 1. It was considered that the severe low temperature injury of rice was caused by the low temperature and shorts of sunshine in the late growing season of rice, especially, the minimum air temperature which was lasted for a few days below critical reproductive growing temperature in the meiosis stage affected high the injury. 2. The low tmperature injury was lightened in the no nitrogen applied plot, and becoming severe with high nitrogen levels, but the balanced application of NPK lessened the low temperature injury. 3. The low temperature injury was more severe in Indica and Japonica hybrid than in Japonica cultivar, and the injury was shown as sterilizing, degraded spiklets, ill emerging of head and inhibition of nutrition absorption, etc. 4. Under the low temperature condition, $SiO_2$ content of rice plant was significantly reduced according to the increase of nitrogen levels. 5. Under the low temperature condition, the optimum application amount of nitrogen for Milyang 23, was 13, 6 kg/10a, this was approximately 10kg/10a smaller than average in usual year. The highly reduced rice yield was resulted from the cool injury, and the reducing rate of yield was larger in Indica and Japonica hybrid cultivar than in Japonica cultivar.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze sports injuries in athletes with disabilities during the 2015 National Games in Korea. We conducted a survey to assess sport injuries in 171 male athletes with disabilities who participated in this study. The shoulder was most frequently injured, followed by the fingers and low back. Contusions were the most common type of injury, and were usually caused by collisions with teammates or contact with equipment. Injuries often occur during enthusiastic play in both competition and practice sessions. Injured athletes are emergently treated with medicated spray and patch application by the head coach. Warm-up and cool-down exercises are recommended to prevent injury, and physical therapy is effective after an injury occurs. Based on these findings, an injury prevention training program and athletic trainers should be provided for athletes with disabilities to ensure appropriate care and rehabilitation.

  • The cooling module needs enough space (or distance) from hood to absorb the energy from any pedestrian collision. Downsized cooling module for pedestrian protection is important to reduce the severity of pedestrian injury. When a vehicle collision happens, the downsized cooling module is required to reduce the risk of injury to the upper legs of adults and the heads of children. In this study, the performance of cooling module to cool the engine was investigated under 25% height reduction. The heat dissipation and pressure drop characteristics have been experimentally studied with the variation of coolant flow rate, air inlet velocity and A/C operation ON/OFF for the downsized cooling module. The results indicated that the cooling performance was about 94% level compared to that of the conventional cooling module. Therefore, we checked that the cooling module had good performance, and expected that the cooling module could meet the same cooling performance as conventional cooling module through optimization of components efficiency.

  • Novel Front End Module(FEM) with improved pedestrian protection is very important to reduce the severity of pedestrian injury. The FEM needs to have enough space from hood to absorb the energy from any pedestrian collision. In this study, the cooling performance of the FEM to cool the engine was investigated under 25% height reduction. The results indicated that the cooling performance analysis was about 86% level compared to that of the conventional FEM. Also, good qualitative agreement between CFD predictions and experimental measurements was found. This FEM needs the cooling performance enhancement for changed air flow path at the frontal part of vehicle. Therefore, we showed an improved performance using air guide setup and shape modification under the high load condition.
