  • The pumping of electric power from photovoltaic (PV) farms is normally carried out using transformers, which require heavy mounting structures and are thus costly, less efficient, and bulky. Therefore, transformerless schemes are developed for the injection of power into the grid. Compared with the H4 inverter topology, the H6 topology is a better choice for pumping PV power into the grid because of the reduced common mode current. This paper presents how the perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) can be implemented in the H6 inverter topology along with the improved sinusoidal current injected to the grid at unity power factor with the average current mode control technique. On the basis of the P&O MPPT algorithm, a power reference for the present insolation level is first calculated. Maintaining this power reference and referring to the AC sine wave of bus bars, a sinusoidal current at unity power factor is injected to the grid. The proportional integral (PI) controller and fuzzy logic controller (FLC) are designed and implemented. The FLC outperforms the PI controller in terms of conversion efficiency and injected power quality. A simulation in the MATLAB/SIMULINK environment is carried out. An experimental prototype is built to validate the proposed idea. The dynamic and steady-state performances of the FLC controller are found to be better than those of the PI controller. The results are presented in this paper.

  • In this paper, a single phase modified switched-diode topology for both symmetrical and asymmetrical cascaded multilevel inverters is presented. It consists of a Modified Switched-Diode Unit (MSDU) and a Twin Source Two Switch Unit (TSTSU) to produce distinct positive voltage levels according to the operating modes. An additional H-bridge synthesizes a voltage waveform, where the voltage levels of either polarity have less Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). Higher-level inverters can be built by cascading MSDUs. A comparative analysis is done with other topologies. The proposed topology results in reductions in the number of power switches, losses, installation area, voltage stress and converter cost. The Nearest Level Control (NLC) technique is employed to generate the gating signals for the power switches. To verify the performance of the proposed structure, simulation results are carried out by a PSIM under both steady state and dynamic conditions. Experimental results are presented to validate the simulation results.

  • A microcomputer-aided fermentation system was constructed for high density fed-batch culture using dissolved oxygen(DO) as a substrate feeding indicator. DO signal was processed prior to aquisition to computer. Agitation speed and oxygen flow rate was changed stepwisely to maintain DO value at a constant level. Agitation speed was controlled by the output signal of D/A converter. Oxygen flow rate was controlled by a flow rate control valve connected to a stepping motor. Substrate was fed with a feeding pump operated by the abrupt increase of DO signal. Methylobacillus sp. SK1 was cultivated to test the system and 16.53g/l of cell density was obtained after 10 hr.

  • In order to reduce the cost, improve the efficiency and simplify the complicated control of existing isolated LED drivers, an improved boundary conduction mode (BCM) Buck ac-dc light emitting diode (LED) driver with extended output voltage and low total harmonic distortion is proposed. With a coupled inductor winding and a stacked output, its output voltage can be elevated to a much higher value when compared to that of the conventional Buck ac-dc converter, without sacrificing the input harmonics and power factor. Therefore, the proposed Buck LED driver can meet the IEC61000-3-2 (Class C) limitation and has a low THD. The operating principle of the topology and the design methodology of the ac-dc LED driver are presented. A 150 W ac-dc prototype was built in the laboratory and it shows that the input current harmonics meet the lighting standard. In addition, the THD is less than 16% at a typical ac input. The peak efficiency is higher than 96.5% at a full load and a normal input.

  • The detail simulation modeling of fully-fed induction generator is investigated through PC based MATLAB/Simulink environment. Generator's stator currents are controlled by indirect vector control method. In this method, generator side converter controls the maximum excitation (air gap flux) by stator d-axis current and controls generator torque by stator q-axis current. Induction generator speed is controlled by tip speed ratio (TSR) upon the wind speed variations in order to generate the maximum output power. The generator torque model is specified as a 3-blade wind turbine with rating, then, the model is simulated under normal operating condition and three different fault conditions. The matlab model designed for fully-fed induction generator based wind farm provides good performance under normal and grid fault conditions. It provides good results for different pwm techniques and fault conditions except the single-phase line to ground fault, which should be verified with real time data from wind farms.

  • This paper presents a single phase high power factor PWM boost rectifier featuring soft commutat -ion of the active switches at zero current. It incorporates the most desirable properties of conventional PWM and soft switching resonant techniques. The input current shaping is achieved with average current mode control and continuous inductor current mode. This new PWM converter provides zero current turn on and turn off of the active switches, and it is suitable for high power applications employing IGBT's. The principle of operation, the theoretical analysis, a design example, and experi -mental results from a laboratory prototype rated at 1.6[kW] with 400[Vdc] output voltage are presented. The measured efficiency and the power factor were 96.2[%] and 0.99[%], respectively, with an input current THD equal to 3.94[%], for an input voltage with THD equal to 3.8[%], at rated load.

  • To suppress the natural convection within enclosure spacing it has been shown theoretically and experimentally that the introduction of cell walls will effectively raise the critical Rayleigh number by providing more shear surfaces within the fluid. For a solar collector, a useful solar thermal converter requires effective control of heat losses. It has been reported that the natural convection can be suppressed and the heat performances of the solar collector increased by placing thin, poorly conducting material honeycomb between the absorber plate and the coverglass. The heat performances were measured and compared directly throughout the simultaneous installation of two solar collectors, one with honeycomb structures fabricated from thin poly carbonate sheet and the other without honeycomb structures. Various tilt angles of 30, 45 and 60 deg. from the horizontal and the honeycomb sizes ($W{\times}H$) of $10{\times}10,\;10{\times}20$ and $10{\times}40mm$ were utilized in the present investigation. It is found that the larger the tilt angle are, the greater the heat losses are, and that the smaller the honeycomb size is, the larger suppression effect of heat losses are. Especially, at tilt angles of 30 degree, the heat use ratio of solar collector with the honeycomb sizes of $10{\times}10mm$ improved approximately 29.5% more than that without honeycomb structures.

  • Recently, the trend of research in hard coating is concentrate on developing the process of ionization rate under low operating pressure, to get the thin film with high adhesion and dense microstructures. In this study ionization rate enhancement type PVD process using permanent magnet is developed, which enhances the ionization rate by confining the plasma suppressing the wall loss of electron. By the result to investigate the characteristic of glow discharge, the ionization rate of this process is enhanced about twice as high as that of triod BARE process (about 26%), and more dense TiN microstructures are obtained in this process. Cylindrical ion energy analyzer is made and attached in front of a quadrupole mass filter for the analysis of the energy distribution of reactive gas and activated gas ions from the plasma zone. To analyze the operation mechanism of ion energy analyzer, computer simulation is performed by calculation the electric field environment using finite element method. By these analyses of ion energy distribution of outcoming ions from the plasma zone, it is found that magnetic field enhances ion kinetic energy as well as ionization rate. The other results of this study is that the foundation of feed-back system is constructed, which automatically control the partial pressure of reactive gas. In can be possible by recording the data of mass spectrum and ion energy analysis using A-D converter.

  • This paper deals with a 3-phase voltage disturbance generator for a performance test of custom power devices such as dynamic voltage restorers (DVR), dynamic uninterruptable power supplies (UPS), etc. The operating principle of the proposed circuit is described in each mode of voltage sag, swell, outage, and unbalance. The main components of the proposed disturbance generator are silicone controlled rectifier (SCR) thyristors, variable autotransformers, and transformers. Therefore, the disturbance generator can be implemented with a considerably low cost compared to the conventional pulse width modified (PWM) inverter and converter type generators. Furthermore, it has good features of high reliability with simple structure, high efficiency caused by no PWM switching of the SCR thyristors, and easy control with a wide variation range. To verify the validity of the proposed scheme, simulations and experiments are carried out.
