  • A planetary boundary layer model has been modified to study the feasibility of siting the wind energy conversion systems over Jejudo island. Our objective is to demonstrate a numerical model that is simple enough to be economical in terms of computational cost and contains most of the mesoscale processes occurring in the planetary boundary layer at the same time. Simulated fields of atmospheric parameters are compared favorably with available climatological data and interpreted in terms of physical phenomena occurring.

  • Wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) process was evaluated to slice Silicon (Si) for various applications. Specifically, various Si workpieces with various resistances, such as single and multi crystalline Si bricks and wafers were used. As conventional slicing processes, such as slurry-on or diamond-on wire slicing, are based on mechanical abrasions between Si and abrasive, there is a limitation to decrease the wafer thickness as well as kerf-loss. Especially, when the wafer thickness is less than $150{\mu}m$, wafer breakage increases dramatically during the slicing process. Single crystalline P-type Si bricks and wafers were successively sliced with considerable slicing speed regardless of its growth direction. Also, typical defects, such as microcracks, craters, microholes, and debris, were introduced when Si was sliced by electrical discharge. Also, it was found that defect type is also dependent on resistance of Si. Consequently, this study confirmed the feasibility of slicing single crystalline Si by WEDM.

  • The effect of various lithium sources such as LiCl, LiOH, and Li-metal on the microstructure and electrochemical properties of granulated $SiO_x$ powders were investigated. Various lithium sources were metallurgically added for a passive pre-lithiation of $SiO_x$ to improve its low initial coulombic efficiency. In spite of using the same amount of Li in various sources, as well as the same process conditions, different lithium silicates were obtained. Moreover, irreversible phases were formed without reduction of $SiO_x$, which might be from additional oxygen incorporation during the process. Accordingly, there were no noticeable electrochemical enhancements. Nevertheless, the $Li_4SiO_4$ phase changes the initial electrochemical reaction, and consequently the relationship between the microstructure and electrochemical properties of metallurgically pre-lithiated $SiO_x$ could provide a guideline for the optimization of the performance of lithium ion batteries.

  • To enhance the performance of SEWGS system by holding the WGS catalyst in a SEWGS reactor using bed inserts, effects of insert geometry and shape of WGS catalysts on CO conversion were measured and investigated. Small scale fluidized bed reactor was used as experimental apparatus and WGS catalyst (particle and tablet) and sand were used as bed materials. The parallel wall type and cross type bed inserts were used to hold the WGS catalysts. The CO conversion with steam/CO ratio was determined based on the exit gas analysis. The measured CO conversion using the bed inserts showed high value comparable to physical mixing cases. Moreover, gas flow direction was confirmed by bed pressure drop measurement for each case. Most of input gas flowed through the catalyst side when we charged tablet type catalyst into the bed insert and this can cause low $CO_2$ capture efficiency because the possibility of contact between input gas and $CO_2$ absorbent is low in this case. New bed insert geometry was proposed based on the results from this study to enhance contact between input gas and WGS catalyst and $CO_2$ absorbent.

  • A lab-scale test was carried out to study the reduction of electrical energy consumption in the pulsed corona discharge process for nitrogen oxides removal. The experiment was mainly focused on 1) the activation of pollution removal reactions by chemical additives and 2) the optimization of electrical circuit for the efficient energy transfer from the power supply to the corona reactor. Hydrocarbon chemical additives used in the experiment are thought to be responsible for the enhancement of the NO conversion through the chain reactions of free radicals such as, R, RCO, and RO. Electrical energy consumption per converted NO molecule has a minimum value of 17 eV when pentanol is injected. When ethylene and propylene are injected, 30 eV and 22 eV of electrical energy consumption is required for the conversion of NO molecule respectively. The ratio of the pulse forming capacitance$(C_e)$ to the reactor capacitance$(C_R)$ plays an important role in the energy transfer efficiency to the reactor. Maximum energy transfer efficiency of approximately 72% could be obtained by using the pulse forming capacitance which is 3.4 times larger than the reactor capacitance, and also the maximum NO conversion efficiency was observed with the same condition.

  • The concept of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is simple and various types of OTEC have been proposed and tried. However the location of OTEC is limited because OTEC requires $20^{\circ}C$ of temperature difference as a minimum, so most of OTEC plants were constructed and experimented in tropical oceans. To solve this we proposed the modified OTEC which uses condenser discharged thermal energy of existing fossil or nuclear power plants. We call this system CTEC (Condenser Thermal Energy Conversion) as this system directly uses $32^{\circ}C$ partially saturated steam in condenser instead of $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ surface sea water as heat source. Increased temperature difference can improve thermal efficiency of Rankine cycle, but CTEC should be located near existing plant condenser and the length of cold water pipe between CTEC and deep cold sea water also increase. So friction loss also increases. Calculated result shows the change of efficiency, pumping power, net power and other parameters of modeled 7.9 MW CTEC at given condition. The calculated efficiency of CTEC is little larger than that of typical OTEC as expected. By proper location and optimization, CTEC could be considered another competitive renewable energy system.

  • This paper presents an effective method to improve efficiency of switched reluctance motor by optimizing energy conversion loop. A nonlinear analytical model which takes saturation account is developed to calculate inductance and flux-linkage. The flux-linkage curve is studied to calculate the co-energy increment to obtain the optimum exciting current. For a given cross-section, the exciting current at which co-energy increment is maximum was found to be constant while stack length varies. Then the energy conversion loop was optimized by varying the stack length and turns of windings. The constraints during optimization were that motor was excited by the maximum increment co-energy current and the energy in the loop was determined by rated power of motor. Dynamic finite element analysis was used to evaluate the efficiency of various models and the comparison of results shows promising effects of the proposed method. Experiment was also conducted to validate the simulation result.

  • In this study, the flow uniformity was analyzed by performing numerical analysis on the 1 kWe internal manifold type solid oxide fuel cell stack according to the channel height of the separator. Also, it was examined by varying the fuel utilization rate and oxygen utilization rate. From the calculation results, we found that as the channel height of the separator decreased, the pressure drop increased exponentially. In addition, it was found that as the channel height of the separator decreased, the gas flow resistance inside the unit cell increased, and the flow resistance increased the pressure drop, thereby improving the flow uniformity inside the stack. Finally, the calculation results showed that as the fuel and oxygen utilization increased, the flow uniformity also improved.

  • This study performed the numerical analysis of the internal flow phenomena of 1 kWe-class solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks with internal manifold type and planar cells using commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, Star-CCM+. In particular, the locations where the turbulent phenomena occur inside the SOFC stack were investigated. In addition, the laminar flow model and the standard k-ε turbulent model were used to calculate the SOFC stack, separately. And, the calculation results of both laminar and turbulent models were compared. The calculation results showed that turbulent phenomena occurred mainly in the cathode flow. Especially, the turbulent phenomena were found in the cathode inlet/outlet region, and local turbulence occurred in the end plate near the inlet pipe.
