It is generalized to measure the arch settlement and convergence during tunnel construction for monitoring its mechanical stability. The initial convergence rate a day is defined from the first convergence measurement and the final convergence defined as the convergence measured lastly. The initial and the final tunnel arch settlement are defined like the preceding convergence. In the study, the relations between the initial and final displacements of a shallow tunnel are analyzed. The measurements were performed in the tunnel of subway 906 construction site in Seoul. The overburden is 10-20 m and the tunnel goes through weathered soil/rock. The width and height of the tunnel are about 11.5 m, 10m, respectively. So this is a shallow tunnel in weak rock. The length of tunnel is about 1,820 m and the tunnel was constructed in 2 stages, dividing upper and lower half. The numbers of measurement locations of arch settlement and convergence are 184 and 258, respectively. As a result, the initial displacement rate and the final displacement are comparatively larger in the section of weathered soil.
In this paper we study a new convergence behavior of the least mean fourth (LMF) algorithm where the error raised to the power of four is minimized for a multiple sinusoidal input and Gaussian measurement noise. Here we newly obtain the convergence equation for the sum of the mean of the squared weight errors, which indicates that the transient behavior can differ depending on the relative sizes of the Gaussian noise and the convergence constant. It should be noted that no similar results can be expected from the previous analysis by Walach and Widrow.

In designing underground structure such as tunnels, estimating geotechnical characteristics of the ground is one of the most important and difficult tasks. In this paper, a methodology that can identify geotechnical parameters using only field-measured relative convergence displacements is presented. By using only relative convergence measurement data, inevitable errors in absolute convergence estimation can be avoided and in turn the parameter estimation process can be simplified. The methodology utilizes sensitivity relationship between static displacement measurements and geotechnical parameters. The feasibility and applicability of the proposed methodology is verified via a 3-d numerical example of a tunnel structure.

Measuring the end-to-end available bandwidth in the Internet is a useful tool for distributedapplication services or QoS (Quality-of-Service) guarantee. To measure the end-to-end available bandwidth, Single-hop Gap model-based packet train measurement techniques are well-known. However, the error of packet train output gap can happen by network topologies. This error of the output gap causes the inaccuracy of the available bandwidth measurement. In this paper, we propose a new end-to-end available bandwidth measurement technique with accurate capacity measurement and fast convergence methods. To solve the erroneous capacity measurement problem of the back-to-back packet train transmission, we propose a new available bandwidth measurement method by decoupling the capacity measurement with the initial gap of the packet train. Also, we propose a new technique to predict the proper initial gap of the packet train for faster convergence. We evaluate our proposed method by the simulation in various topologies comparing with previous methods.

In recent years, measurement in a smart-phone environment is attracting attention in various fields due to its easy set-up process, various functions, convenience and expandability. Even in the field of safety evaluation and maintenance of large-scale infra-structures, the appropriate application of these effective and convenient measurement techniques can be of great help. In this paper, an experimental study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness, problems and complementary methods of applying smart-phone accelerometers to the measurement in infra-structure such as bridges. In model bridge subjected to impact and moving loads, the measured accelerations using a smart-phone and a professional accelerometer were directly compared in time domain. And the statistical and frequency characteristics of the measured signal and transfer function were also examined in frequency domain. The results show that the accuracy of measurement using smart-phone sensor is primarily affected by its incomplete sampling performance. In conclusion, smart-phone sensors cannot be considered suitable for precise assessment, where measurements must be accurate over a wide frequency range, but we can say that the technique is still useful and fairly accurate for some purpose over a limited frequency range, such as the low pass frequency range, which is a major concern for civil structures.

Borescopes facilitate the inspection of areas inside machines and systems that are not directly accessible for visual inspection. They offer real-time, up-close access to confined and hard-to-access spaces without having to dismantle or destructure the object under inspection. Borescopes are ideal instruments for routine maintenance, quality inspection and monitoring of systems and structures. The main application being fault or defect detection, it is useful to have measuring capability to quantify object dimensions in a target area. High-end borescopes use multi-optic solutions to provide measurement information of viewed objects. Multi-optic solutions can provide accurate measurements at the expense of structural complexity and cost increase. Measuring functionality is often unavailable in low-end, single camera borescopes. In this paper, a single camera measurement solution that enables the size estimation of viewed objects is proposed. The proposed solution computes and overlays a scaled grid of known spacing value over the screen view, enabling the human inspector to estimate the size of the objects in view. The proposed method provides a simple means of measurement that is applicable to low-end borescopes with no built-in measurement capability.

In high-speed wireless communications, an analysis of the propagation characteristics is an important process. Information on the propagation characteristics suitable for each environment significantly helps in the design of mobile communications. This paper presents the analysis results of radio propagation characteristics in outdoor environments for a new mobile wireless system at 781 MHz. To avoid the interference of Korean DTV broadcasting, we measure the channel characteristics in urban, suburban, and rural areas on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea, using a channel sounder and $4{\times}4$ antenna. The path loss (PL) measurement results differ from those of existing propagation models by more than 10 dB. To analyze the frequency characteristics for Korean propagation environments, we derive various propagation characteristic parameters: PL, delay spread, angular spread, and K-factor. Finally, we verify the validity of the measurement results by comparing them with the actual measurement results and 3D ray-tracing simulation results.

Since most biosignals rely on contact-based measurement, there is still a problem in that it is hard to provide convenience to users by applying them to daily life. In this paper, we present a mobile application for estimating heart rate based on a deep learning model. The proposed application measures heart rate by capturing real-time face images in a non-contact manner. We trained a three-dimensional convolutional neural network to predict photoplethysmography (PPG) from face images. The face images used for training were taken in various movements and situations. To evaluate the performance of the proposed system, we used a pulse oximeter to measure a ground truth PPG. As a result, the deviation of the calculated root means square error between the heart rate from remote PPG measured by the proposed system and the heart rate from the ground truth was about 1.14, showing no significant difference. Our findings suggest that heart rate measurement by mobile applications is accurate enough to help manage health during daily life.
