  • This paper proposes a possibility of using active front-end rectifier with the SVPWM method for induction motor speed control, which is applicable to small electric propulsion boats. The proposed method can produce a more precise sinusoidal input current waveform and a higher power factor than conventional methods. Its speed, torque, input current, DC voltage, and load current control performance are similar to or better than those of conventional methods. Through computer simulations using the PSIM program, the validity of the proposed method was verified by comparing and analyzing the characteristics of the conventional methods and the proposed method.

  • The characteristics of I-V and P-V of solar cell nonlinearly changes according to irradiation, temperature and load. Therefore, to use efficiently PV system, operating point must be always operating at maximum power point. Also, PV system is semiconductor, so it generates loss by temperature. But because of conventional MPPT methods are not considering temperature, it has problem which decrease efficiency. This paper proposes temperature measurement based optimal voltage(TMOV) MPPT algorithm using temperature measurement based optimal voltage. It analyzes characteristics of solar cell according to irradiation and temperature and conventional MPPT methods. The TMOV control algorithm proposed in this paper is compared and analyzed conventional MPPT methods. The validity of this paper proves using this result.

  • Grey-level statistical models have been widely used in many applications for object location and identification. However, conventional models yield some problems in model refinement when training images are not properly aligned, and have difficulties for real-time recognition of arbitrarily rotated models. This paper presents improved grey-level statistical models that align training images using image or feature matching to overcome problems in model refinement of conventional models, and that enable real-time recognition of arbitrarily rotated objects using efficient hierarchical search methods. Edges or features extracted from a mean training image are used for accurate alignment of models in the search image. On the aligned position and orientation, fitness measure based on grey-level statistical models is computed for object recognition. It is demonstrated in various experiments in PCB inspection that proposed methods are superior to conventional methods in recognition accuracy and speed.

  • Vickers microhardness for polished Cu specimen has been measured by conventional and new methods. The conventional microhardness was measured by observing the diagonal of indentation after the load was removed. Whereas, the new method for microhardness was obtained by measuring the penetration depth of indenter into the specimen under the load. As the applied load was increased, the microhardness obtained by new method was increased. When the applied load was in the range of 5mN to 80mN, the rate of elastic to total depth of indenter was about 6% and the calculated depth of rounded indenter was 0.07$\mu\textrm{m}$. The difference in microhardness measured by two different methods such as conventional and new methods can be explained in terms of the elastic deformation of specimen, the shape of practical indenter and pile up of material.

  • In this paper, a new barrier rib forming method of embossed barrier rib (EBR) formation process for the PDP rear panel was introduced. The process is mainly composed of green sheet fabrication, lamination of the green sheet on the rear glass panel having data electrodes, and roll embossing followed by firing. The EBR process has two advantages over the conventional barrier rib forming methods. One is the process requires less equipment investment than the conventional methods by about 20% of the current rear panel fabrication equipment investment owing to the simplified fabrication process. The other advantage is its reduced rear panel manufacturing cost by eliminating the time consuming and complicated processes and waste of materials in the conventional methods. In this study, general procedure of EBR fabrication process is described and the characteristics of prototype PDP using EBR panel are discussed.

  • We introduce a new degree reduction method for homogeneous symmetric polynomials on binary variables that generalizes the conventional degree reduction methods on monomials introduced by Freedman and Ishikawa. We also design an degree reduction algorithm for general polynomials on binary variables, simulated on the graph coloring problem for random graphs, and compared the results with the conventional methods. The simulated results show that our new method produces reduced quadratic polynomials that contains less variables than the reduced quadratic polynomials produced by the conventional methods.

  • Methods for estimation of the effective stress intensity factor range (${\Delta}K_{eff}$) are evaluated for narrow and wide band random loading crack growth test data of 2024-T351 aluminum alloy. Three methods of determining $K_{op}$, visual measurement, ASTM offset compliance method, and the neural network method proposed by Kang and Song, and three methods of estimating ${\Delta}K_{eff}$, conventional, the 2/PI0 and 2/PI methods proposed by Donald and Paris, are compared in a quantitative manner by using the results of fatigue crack growth life prediction under random loading. For all $K_{op}$ determination methods discussed, the 2/PI0 and 2/PI methods of estimating ${\Delta}K_{eff}$ provide better results than conventional method for narrow and wide band random loading data.

  • Validity and limitation of conventional methods for analyzing the characteristics of nonuniform transmission lines are discussed here. It is found that uniqueness of cal- culated input impedance of an exponential transmission line by employing conventional methods is not assured in general but only under secific conditions. And the calculated input impedance of an angled two-plane transmission line based on the conventional planar TEM mode devices from its rigorous solution.

  • Background: Pump-controlled retrograde trial off (PCRTO) is a safe, simple, and reversible method for weaning patients from veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO). However, few studies have compared PCRTO to conventional weaning methods. This retrospective study aimed to compare PCRTO to non-PCRTO methods. Methods: This study included patients who were weaned from VA-ECMO from January 2016 to December 2022 at our medical center. Demographic data, ECMO management, ECMO complications, survival to discharge, and cardiogenic shock after VA-ECMO weaning were compared between the 2 groups. Results: Seventy patients who were weaned from VA-ECMO using PCRTO and 85 patients who were weaned with conventional methods were compared. Patient characteristics were not significantly different between the 2 groups. The rate of survival to discharge was significantly higher in the PCRTO group than in the non-PCRTO group (90% vs. 72%, p=0.01). The rates of freedom from all-cause mortality at 10, 30, and 50 days after weaning from ECMO were 75%, 55%, and 35% in the non-PCRTO group and 62%, 60%, and 58% in the PCRTO group, respectively (p=0.1). The incidence of cardiogenic shock after weaning from VA-ECMO was significantly higher in the non-PCRTO group (16% vs. 5%, p=0.04). In logistic regression analysis, PCRTO was a significant factor for survival to discharge (odds ratio, 2.42; 95% confidence interval, 1.29-5.28; p=0.02). Conclusion: Compared to conventional methods, PCRTO is a feasible and reversible method, and it serves as a useful predictor of successful VA-ECMO weaning through a preload stress test.
