  • Fuzzy control has been researched for application of industrial processes which have no accurate mathematical model and could not controlled by conventional methods because of a lack of quantitative input-output data. Intelligent control approach based on fuzzy logic could directly reflex human thinking and natural language to controller comparing with conventional methods. In this paper, fuzzy controller is implemented to acquire operator's knowledge. The tested system is constructed for sending a ball to the goal position using wind from two DC motors in the path. This system contains non-linearity and uncertainty because of the characteristic of aerodynamics inside the path. Ball position is measured by a vision camera. The system used in this experiment could be hardly modeled by mathematic methods and could not be easily controlled by linear control manners. The controller, in this paper is designed based on the input-output data and experimental knowledge obtained by trials.

  • Security is a primary concern in group communication, and secure authentication is essential to establishing a secure group communication. Most conventional authentications consist of knowledge-based and token-based methods. One of the token-based methods is a X.509 certificate, which is used under a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI); it is the most well-known authentication system in a distributed network environment. However, it has a well-known weakness, which only proves the belonging of a certificate. PKI cannot assure identity of a person. The conventional knowledge-based and token-based methods do not really provide positive personal identification because they rely on surrogate representations of the person's identity. Therefore, I propose a secure X.509 certificate with biometric information to assure the identity of the person who uses the X.509 certificate in a distributed computing environment.

  • This research has a purpose to develop strategies for application and introduction of activitiy based costing for Korean hospitals. A 700 bed-sized general hospital in Taejon was chosen to conduct this study. The conventional costing and ABC methods were simultaneously applied to the Obstetrics & Gynecology department, using data surveyed from June 21 to 30, 1998. The difference of two costing methods' results were analyzed and ABC's superiority was recognized. It showed that the new ABC model was more rational, fair, and objective in allocating indirect costs. The strategies to introduce ABC model to hospitals were suggested as followings: 1)a committee to manage ABC should be organized; 2)education for the employees about costing and cost saving should be provided; 3)the computerized ABC program should be developed; and 4)more advanced and rigourous methods to identify activities and measure the resource consumption should be developed.

  • This paper presents an optimization method for optimal reactive power dispatch which minimizes real power loss and improves voltage profile of power systems using evolutionary computation such as genetic algorithms(GAs), evolutionary programming(EP). and evolution strategy(ES). Many conventional methods to this problem have been proposed in the past, but most these approaches have the common defect of being caught to a local minimum solution. Recently, global search methods such as GAs, EP, and ES are introduced. The proposed methods were applied to the IEEE 30-bus system. Each simulation result, compared with that obtained by using a conventional gradient-based optimization method, Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP), shows the possibility of applications of evolutionary computation to large scale power systems.

  • A novel current control technique with fast response and application in an unbalanced system is proposed in this paper. Contrary to the conventional PI and dead-beat current control techniques, the proposed method is adopted to the valley current mode control (VCMC) and average current mode control (ACMC) methods to overcome the phase delay caused by conventional methods. The advantages of the proposed system are simplicity of structure and ease of implementation. The VCMC and ACMC methods are established and applied to the buck converter, boost converter, three-phase PWM converter, and three-phase inverter. The control performances of the proposed systems are shown by computer simulations and verified by experimental results.

  • Artificial intelligence techniques have improved fire-detection methods; however, false alarms still occur. Conventional methods detect fires using current sensors, which can lead to detection errors due to temporary environmental changes or noise. Thus, fire-detection methods must include a trend analysis of past information. We propose a deep-learning-based fire detection method using multi-sensor data and Kendall's tau. The proposed system used a BiLSTM model to predict fires using pre-processed multi-sensor data and extracted trend information. Kendall's tau indicates the trend of a time-series data as a score; therefore, it is easy to obtain a target pattern. The experimental results showed that the proposed system with trend values recorded an accuracy of 99.93% for BiLSTM and GRU models in a 20-tap moving average filter and 40% fire threshold. Thus, the proposed trend approach is more accurate than that of conventional approaches.

  • Edge is a significant element to represent boundary information between objects in images. There are various edge detection methods, which are based on differential operation, such as Sobel, Prewitt, Roberts, Canny, Laplacian, and etc. However the conventional methods have drawbacks as follow : (i) insensitivity to edges with gentle curve intensity, (ii) detection of double edges for edges with one pixel width. For the detection of edges, not only development of the effective operators but also that of appropriate thresholding methods are necessary. But it is very complicate problem to find an appropriate threshold. In this paper, we propose an edge detection method based on the region separateness between objects to overcome the drawbacks of the conventional methods, and a thresholding method for the proposed edge detection method. We show the effectiveness of the proposed method through experimental results obtained by applying the proposed and the conventional methods to well-known test images.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify the influence of Bobath and conventional method has an effect on gait of adult hemiplegic patients. Methods : The data were collected by each 15 adult stroke patients. The treatment was based on Bobath and conventional approach. Temporal and spatial parameters of gait were analysed for using the computerized GAITRite system. Results : The gait step (p<.05), gait velocity (p<.05), cadence (p<.05) and step length (p<.05) was significantly different with the Bobath method. The Gait step (p<.05) and gait velocity (p<.05) was significantly different with the conventional method. But the cadence and step length was not significantly increased in the conventional method. Conclusion : The Bobath method is more useful to improve the gait in hemiplegic patients than conventional method.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare the conventional and digital radiography in the estimation of working length in mandibular molars. Materials and Methods : Sixty molar teeth were selected and divided into three groups in the basis of canal curves (0-$15^{\circ}$, 15-$30^{\circ}$, > $30^{\circ}$). After the placement of a 15 K-file, radiographs were taken with a conventional film (Fspeed) and a digital sensor. Canal lengths were measured in these images by two observers. Statistical analysis was performed with repeated measures of ANOVA and paired sample t-test with 95% confidence. Results : There was a high inter-observer agreement on the measurements of working length in conventional and digital radiographs. There was no significant difference between the mean values of measurements in conventional and digital radiography. Moreover, there was no significant difference between conventional and digital radiography with the actual values in the basis of canal curves. Conclusion : The accuracy of conventional and digital radiography in the determination of the working length was in an acceptable range.
