Mass and Heat Transfer Characteristics of Vertical Flat Plate with Free Convection

  • This paper has dealt with the characteristics of mass and heat transfer of vertical flat plate with free convection. The theory of similarity transformations applied to the momentum and energy equations for free convection. To derive the similarity equation of mass transfer. the equation for conservation of species was added to the continuity. momentum and energy equations. The momentum, energy and species equations set numerically to obtain the velocity, temperature and mass fraction of species as dimensionless. For cases where momentum transport dominates, the thermal boundary layers are shorter than the momentum boundary layer. The relationships between momentum, energy and species were clarified from this study.

적층형 Heat Sink의 열저항 특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Thermal Resistance Characteristics of Layered Heat Sink)

  • This paper has been made to investigate the thermal performance characteristics for the several types of layered aluminum heat sinks with offset-strip fin. Heat sinks with different fin height, fin length, number of fin layer and slanted fin are prepared and tested for natural convection as well as forced convection. The experimental results for layered heat sink(LHS) are compared to those for advanced pin fin heat sink (PHS) so that the appropriate heat sink can be designed or chosen according to the heating conditions. The overall heat transfer performances for LHS are almost comparable to those of PHS under natural convection, and become 1.2∼1.5 times as high as those of PHS under forced convection situation. This study shows that fin height and number of fin layer re important parameters, which have a serious influence on thermal performance for layered heat sinks.

열화상카메라를 이용한 Rayleigh-Benard-Marangoni 자연대류 실험 연구 (Experimental Study on Rayleigh-Benard-Marangoni Natural Convection using IR Camera)

  • Rayleigh-Benard-Marangoni (RBM) convection have been artificially made for application of various engineering fields. For a relatively larger circular container, natural convection experiments were carried out to reveal and show the flow characteristics with engine oil (SAE30) using IR camera. IR camera has captured the temperature distribution on the free surface. From these experiments, it was confirmed that it was possible to quantitatively analyze the occurrence characteristics of RBM flow clearly from the thermal images taken with IR camera. As the aspect ratio increased, both the number of internal and external cavities increased. And found that the criteria of RBM flow generation proposed through previous experiments performed for small-sized containers are also very effective with the results on larger circular container.

  • Three-dimensional heat transfer characteristics for natural convection flows are numerically investigated in the doubly-inclined cubical-cavity according to the variation of a newly defined orientation angle �� of the hot wall surface from horizontal plane at moderate Rayleigh numbers. Numerical simulations of laminar flows are conducted in the range of Rayleigh numbers($10^4{\leq}Ra{\leq}10^5$) and $0^{\circ}{\leq}{\alpha}90^{circ}$ with a solution code(PowerCFD) employing unstructured cell-centered method. Comparisons of the average Nusselt number at the cold face are made with benchmark solutions and experimental results found in the literature. It is found that the average Nusselt number at the cold wall has a maximum value around the specified orientation ${\alpha}$ at each Rayleigh number. Special attention is also paid to three-dimensional thermal characteristics in natural convection according to new orientation angles at Ra��= $1{\times}10^5$, in order to investigate a new additional heat transfer characteristic found in the range of above Ra = $6{\times}10^4$.

수평원관내에서 과냉각 및 자연대류가 융해과정에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Subcooling and Natural Convection on the Melting inside a Horizontal Tube)

  • The effects of subcooling and natural convection are studied numerically on the melting process of an initially subcooled phase-change medium filled inside a horizontal circular cylinder. It is postulated that melting continues with the tube wall kept at a constant temperature and with the unmelted solid core fixed. Primary emphasis is placed on the evolution of interface morphology, the local/overall heat transfer rate at the tube wall and at the interface, and the structure of natural convection. The numerical results are mainly presented in terms of the Rayleigh and subcooling numbers. As the degree of subcooling intensifies, the melting rate and the movement of the interface are impeded but the interfaces are of similar shape with the passage of time. The heat transfer characteristics are found to be mostly governed by the formation pattern of natural convection in the liquid phase. Good agreement with available experimental data is found.

  • Most of the previous studies on natural convection were based on the numerical analysis, and some experimental studies considered the classic case of thermal convection. In this study, an adiabatic square body was located at the center of an enclosure between the bottom hot and top cold walls. And the measurement of the detailed temperature fields was conducted by the method of two-color Laser Induced Fluorescence using a Nd:Yag laser. As a result, heat transfer characteristics of natural convection with an adiabatic body was estimated as a function of time over a range of Rayleigh numbers.

온돌면(溫突面)의 방열량(放熱量) 산정방법(算定方法)에 관한 연구(硏究) (A Calculation Method on Heat Flux from Ondol Floor Surface)

  • Until recently there was a lack of reliable performance data for the design and operation of Ondol heating systems. This paper presents a calculation method on heat flux from Ondol floor surface. Total heat flux from floor consists of radiation and convection component. In order to analyse the characteristics of both radiation and convection heat flux, each surface temperature is measured and several temperatures near each wall are measured vertically and horizontally in a practical Ondol heating space. Radiation heat flux is calculated and analysed by Gebhart's Absorption Factor Method with the consideration of instantaneous radiant exchanges. Convection heat output is derived from the vertical temperature profiles near floor. The vertical temperature profiles could be expressed by nonlinear regression equation models and convection coefficients could be estimated by the equations. As a result, radiation, convection and total heat flux are suggested by the expression of difference between floor surface and room air temperature.

  • Steady-state natural convection heat transfer characteristics from cylinders in a multiply-connected bounded region are clarified. A spectral finite difference scheme (spectral decomposition of the system of partial differential equations, semi-implicit time integration) is applied in numerical analysis, with a boundary-fitted conformal coordinate system through a Jacobian elliptic function with a successive transformation to formulate a system of governing equations in terms of a stream function, vorticity and temperature. Multiplicity of the domain is expressed explicitly.

저온스팀 열처리 방식에 따른 감자의 전처리 특성 (Pretreatment Characteristics of Potatoes by Soft Steam Treatment)

  • 본 연구는 최근 매우 우수한 가열 매체로 인정받고 있는 저온스팀(soft steam) 열처리 공정의 natural convection (NC) 방식과 forced convection-boiler (FC-b) 및 forced convection-fan (FC-f) 방식을 이용하여 처리온도(60, 70, $80^{\circ}C$) 및 시간(0-60분)에 따른 감자의 전처리 특성을 비교 평가하고자 하였다. 스팀처리 방식에 따른 가열실 내부의 온도변화와 감자 내 외부의 온도변화, 감자의 cook value, ascorbic aicd 및 수분의 함량과 중량감소율의 변화를 관찰한 결과, 모든 처리조건에서 FC-b 및 FC-f의 강제대류 방식에 비해 자연대류의 NC 방식이 이들 전처리 특성에 대해 우수한 결과를 나타냄을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서, 본 연구의 결과들은 감자의 가공 및 전처리를 위해 현재 사용되고 있는 기존의 열처리 공정에 대한 대안으로써 NC 방식 스팀처리의 높은 효율성 및 산업적 적용에 대한 가능성을 제시하고 있다.
