  • There is a consensus among researchers about the fact that women should be familiar with their breasts but there is a lot of argument as to how to make them aware of what is normal for them. For over decades breast self examination (BSE) was advocated for the same but as an outcome of work conducted by researchers in various countires a controversy has been raised in the West. In a country like India, where breast cancer screening is not popular and limited resources are available we should question what would be the best strategy to make women familiar with their breasts to facilitate best use of BSE.

  • The taxonomy of the Alternaria spp. has been a subject, of controversy because of their high variability in conidial morphology and polymorphism displayed even in pure cultures. The published Korean literature on the genus Alternaria is scattered and fragmentary, and pertains to about 25 species with special emphasis on occurrence and pathogenicity, but mycological studies on this group of fungi are insufficient. This is the first series of detailed and consolidated account of Korean species of Alternaria, which includes 11 species; viz., Alternaria brassicae, A. brassicicola, A. cinerariae, A. dauci, A. dianthi, A. dianthicola, A. helianthi, A. helianthinffciens, A. iridicola, A. japonica and A. protenta. Detailed diagnostic descriptions, specific characterizations, taxonomic discussions and illustrations for each species are presented.

  • Ontology developing process has aroused a lot of controversy among knowledge engineers and knowledge users. The recent surges on ontology building methodologies and practical ontology applications have explored a broad spectrum of knowledge management challenges. On the one hand, the abundant methodology theories provide us with a set of useful heuristic rules, from which we get the overview of ontology building process. But on the other hand, every research groups would like to justify their theories by listing their specific characteristics and unique method when approaching the right way. However, there is still no one “correct” way or methodology for developing ontologies. In this case, the methods used to evaluate only a subset of specific domain do not make any sense to the commonsense users. As a result, a comprehensive understanding of domain ontology is urgent and necessary.

  • This paper contributes to the ongoing controversy over price and volatility spillovers across countries by providing new evidence with the futures data of the S&P 500 and Nikkei 225 index futures contacts from January 3, 1990 to April 16, 1996. Based on the two-stage symmetric and asymmetric GARCH models we document that both the U.S. and the Japanese daytime returns significantly influence the subsequent overnight returns of the other market. We find no signs of volatility spillovers between two international markets with the symmetric model. However, with the asymmetric models, we find that the magnitude of foreign negative shocks are different from the positive ones. The findings generally suggest that the two markets are more sensitive to the bad news originating in the other market. This nature of transmission between two markets would have important implications to the arbitragers who are trying to exploit the short-term dynamics of price and volatility movements across two security markets.

  • A new health paradigm may be evolving that would place emphasis on the positive aspects of diet, identifying components that are physiologically active and that contribute to the prevention of disease onset. It has been increasingly difficult to evaluate the impact of new bioactive materials and food products on the well being of society. Thus, testing systems for both health function and toxicity have become very elaborate, complex, and interrelated, making their interpretation difficult and open to controversy. To select the proper starting materials, to screen the appropriate health functionality and to determine the efficacy of product, a reliable, reproducible, sensitive and predictive assay is required. Particularly, in uitro assay is the first stage in preclinical test on physiologically active materials and have many advantages in terms of time, cost and convenience. However, several factors as well as some limitations should be considered in this assay system. This presentation, therefore, will address the use of in uitro assays for evaluating physiological functionality of foods coupled with general consideration.

  • There is a controversy on Internet pricing, flat-rate vs. usage-based. This study gives a comparative analysis between flat-rate and two-part tariff which is realistic alternative of usage-based pricing. In a basic economic model, two-part tariff based on ISP's cost structure satisfies allocative efficiency and relatively expand the number of subscribers. But the characteristics of Internet service like consumers' uncertainty on cost, measurement cost of traffic and network externality induce increase of cost or decrease of marginal utility. The analysis shows that small impact of these can make flat-rate more efficient.

  • The SSEP(SomatoSensory Evoke Potentials) test is a valid and repeatable technique which correlates with clinically assessed joint position & vibration sense, skin touch & pressure sense. Also SSEP study is a simple and quantitative test, and has been used to evaluate the sensoty system along the somatosensory pathway from peripheral sensory receptor to the cortex. The ascending pathway of SSEP has been know to be posterior column-lemniscal pathway, but not without controversy. There are two kind of test mathods : one of test is median nerve SSEP and other test is posterior tibial nerve SSEP. Recently, SSEP used to performed to evaluate the usefulness of dermatomal SSEP(D-SSEP) and segmental SSEP(5-SSEP) for the diagnosis of lumbasacral radiculopathy, and it can be measure of ingual ahd palatine evoked potentials & indicator of medullary function useful for the diagnosis of brain death.

  • Henoch-$Sch{\ddot{o}}nlein$ purpura(HSP) frequently follows upper respiratory infection, and one of the causes of this discase is inferred to $\beta$-hemolytic streptococcal infection, but the relationship is still unclear. familial tendency of this disease is unclear, too. Also genetic relationship of this disease has been in a controversy yet. We experienced two cases of HSP in brother and sister at similar period, and report this case with review of related literatures.

  • Myocardial perfusion and function can be quantified using SPECT and PET. There was controversy over the usefulness of the correction techniques for physical artifacts, such as photon attenuation and scatter, in the quantification of myocardial perfusion using SPECT. However, the cumulated results of many investigations have leaded the consensus on the usefulness of the correction procedures to improve the accuracy and specificity of the myocardial SPECT in the assessment of coronary artery diseases. Although the clinical value of the myocardial perfusion PET has not been preyed yet, the absolute myocardial blood flow and perfusion reserve values quantified using myocardial PET are employed in many basic investigations. In this paper, the methods for the quantitative myocardial SPECT and PET will be reviewed.

  • Compared with the earlier technique of dual photon absorptiometry (DPA) using $^{153}Gd$ radionuclide source, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has advantages of higher precision, accuracy and shorter scanning time. Despite the change from DPA to DPX, the nuclear medicine physicians has remained one of major suplier of this service due to long-standing use of DPA. Among many kinds of bone densitometries, DXA is the "gold standard" for the noninvasive diagnosis of osteoporosis. Especially there is no role for peripheral devices in the monitoring of patients on therapy. But, there are some areas of controversy related to the application of DXA, such as proper site of measurement, accurate interpritation, appropriate use of T-score, and the reference population young database. And the accuracy, precision, and quality control issues relating to bone density measurement are important subjects. To address these issues, the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) has convened two Position Development Conferences and addressed official positions. This review deals the key elements of ISCD position paper and other important issues on the management of bone densitometry.
