Photoplethsymogram (PPG) drifts due to the changes in respiration and blood perfusion as well as external light. This hinders a proper PPG measurement. We controlled DC drifts by controlling the signal ground of PPG signals. A microprocessor-based system successfully controlled DC drifts of PPG signals.
This study was carried out to determine whether the effects of an ${\alpha}_2-adrenoceptor$ agonist, clonidine, on mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) are influenced by mild hypothermia. Experiments were performed in respiration-controlled and spontaneously breathing pentobarbital-anesthetized rats. Rectal temperature was maintained at $37.5{\pm}0.3^{circ}C$ for normothermic groups or at $35.2{\pm}0.3^{circ}C$ for mild hypothermic groups. Intravenous injection of clonidine (1 and 2 ${\mu}g/kg)$ produced depressor and bradycardic responses in spontaneously breathing rats under both normothermic and mild hypothermic condition: a decrease in MAP was not altered but bradycardic response was significantly augmented in the mild hypothermic group as compared with the normothermic group. Under the respiration-controlled condition, the hypotensive effect of clonidine $(2\;{\mu}g/kg)$ was reduced, whereas the bradycardic effect was increased in mild hypothermic rats as compared with normothermic rats. Both hypotensive and bradycardic effects of clondine $(2\;{\mu}g/kg)$ were blocked by pretreatment with an ${\alpha}_2-adrenoceptor$ antagonist, yohimbine (0.5 mg/kg), in both thermal conditions. Yohimbine (0.5 mg/kg, i.v.) alone produced signifcantly an increase in heart rate in the mild hypothermic group than in the normothermic group. Pretreatment with a muscarinic receptor antagonist, atropine methylnitrate (1 mg/kg, i.v.), attenuated the bradycardic effect of clonidine in the mild hypothermic group but not in the normothermic group. These results suggest that clonidine- induced bradycardia is amplified by mild hypothermia probably through an increased parasympathetic activity.

The present study was designed to investigate whether there is a consistint changes in the signals from the central and autonomic nervous systim due to olfactory stimulation. The olfactory stimuli were 0.6% orange and 2.5% valeric acid and the stimuli through the olfactory stimulator soth controlled consistint flow, controlled concentration, and saturated with vapour to prevent drying the nasal mucosa. A room air blunk served as the control stimulus, EEG was recorede from 4channels according to the international 10-20 systim. Additionally, ECG, EOG, heart rate, skin conductance and resputation were recorded comtinuously. The fast Fourier transform analysis of EEG waves was analysed with the power spectra. Averaged power spectra were computed for the following frequency bands ; delta(0-4.5Hz), theta (4.5-7Hz), alphal(7-9.5Hz), alpha2 (9.5-12.5Hz) and beta(12.5-30Hz). Withthe results of the subjective sensibility test for the ordor, the orange was related to pleasant and familiar and the valeric acid was realted to snpleasant and bothersome. There is the difference between orange and valeric acid in alphal at PG2-A2 channel. While the unpleasant stimuli seem to be increased in alphal, alpha2 and beta waves at all channels. Also, the heart rate, galvaric skin resistance seem to be decreased by pleasant stimuli and thd unpleasant stimuli shdwed the opposite. In respiration, respiration rate had been declinig tendency, and input/output ampoitued and duration showed an upward trend by olfactory stimulation with orange, while opposite by valeric acid. In conclusion, the consistent EEG changes and the autonomic responses suggests the possibilities of the subjective signal of human sensibility.
Many previous studies based on respiratory characteristics of Idiopathic Parkinson's Diseases (IPD) patients have not controlled related factors appropriately. Accordingly, these studies produced discordant results. Furthermore, there is currently a lack of studies that can provide precise explanations on the characteristics of respiration and phonation. This study included a total of 40 subjects: 20 mixed gender de novo IPD patients ranging in age from 50 to 80 (Hoehn & Yahr stage 1~3), and 20 normal subjects with similar matches for age and gender. All participants were controlled based on their gender, age, height, weight, vocal fold function, cognitive abilities, and depression factors. K-MMSE (Korean-Mini Mental State Examination), nVHI-10 (new Voice Handicap Index), and KGDS (Korean Form of Geriatric Depression Scale) were evaluated to select this study subjects. In order to compare respiratory functions between the two groups, FVC, FEV1, and FEV1/FVC were measured using microQuark, a PC-based spirometer. CSL was used by measure MPT and PAS was used to measure MFR. To investigate the characteristics of phonation ability, CSL was used to measure jitter and shimmer, while PAS was used to measure Psub. In order to compare the respiratory function averages and phonation ability between the two groups, statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS (version 12.0). The results of this study showed that most de novo IPD patients were included in the normal average range of respiratory and phonatory ability. But the respiratory and phonatory ability of de novo IPD patients showed lower tendency as compared with the normal group. When the average of respiratory and phonatory ability among the gender was compared, the difference of males was greater than the difference of females.

The purpose of the present study is to determine the role of muscarinic cholinergic receptors of posterior hypothalamus in the central blood pressure regulation when respiration is controlled. In anesthetized and artificially ventilated rats, vasodepressor response was evoked by injection of L-glutamate(10 nmol) neuroexcitatory amino acid into the posterior hypothalamic area. The injection of $carbachol(0.5{\sim}8\;nmol)$ into the same area induced dose-dependent vasodepressor and bradycardic responses. Pretreatment with atropine(4 nmol) completely blocked the vasodepressor response to carbachol(2 nmol). In contrast, in spontaneously breathing rats, the injection of carbachol(8 nmol) into the posterior hypothalamic area induced the vasopressor and tachycardic responses. These results suggest that the muscarinic cholinergic receptors in the posterior hypothalamic area primarily play an inhibitory role in the central regulation of blood pressure and heart rate.
This study presents physiological rates of respiration and excretion, clearance rate, and assimilation efficiency of the ark shell Scapharca broughtonii, determined during 2007 from specimens collected in Gamak Bay on the south coast of Korea. Physiological parameters were measured monthly under static, laboratory controlled conditions with ambient conditions, and measurements were performed seasonally in order to estimate scope for growth and its probable sources of variation. Temperature directly influenced respiration and excretion. Clearance rates showed a tendency to be low during May-August, which is a period of gametogenesis. Assimilation efficiency was not significantly different seasonally and was independent of the concentration of chlorophyll a. The scope for growth was negative during high-temperature months (July-August), reflecting the high temperature and low clearance rate, and had its highest positive values during spring and autumn. The energy budget or growth potential of bivalves has been applied to other economically important species. Data on the physiological parameters and scope for growth of S. broughtonii obtained in this study will be used to assess the carrying capacity for ark shell cultivation.
With microorganism as a single cell model to investigate the cellular effect of total extract of ginseng powder, it was found that ginseng affects cellular respiration biphasically (Tso and Fung, 1980; Tso, 1981). As ginseng is recognized to be a tonic medicinal herb, this finding suggests a possible role of ginseng in altering cellular energy metabolism. Along this line, the same effect on mitochondrial oxygen consumption was studied. It was found that under a controlled pH condition, a significant stimulation of the mitochondrial respiration was observed. This stimulation was ginseng dose-dependent. However, when ginseng was applied at an above threshold concentration, an inhibitory effect was noted. This confirms the previous observation with single cell organism and suggests a universal regulation of energy metabolism effect that transcends cell origin.
In this paper, the power spectral analysis of heart rate variability(HRV) was performed to evaluate effects of orthostatic stress with head-up tiIt on autonomic nervous system(ANS) for 25 healthy male subjects(age : 24 $\pm$ 5 yr.) and a new method was proposed to assess the autonomic balance. The ECG and respiration signals were recorded at tiIt angles of $0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$and $0^{\circ}$ successively for 10 minutes per each stage under the condition of frequency controlled respiration(0.25Hz). Heat rate(HR) gradually increased ils the angle increased Similarly, according to the increment of angle, normalized low frequency component(0.05-0.15Hz) gradually increased, whereas normalized high frequency component (0.20-0.30Hz) was reduce4 From these results it is speculated that orthostatic stress head-up tiLt, results in the prevalence of sympathetic tone in autonomic balance with the increment of sympathetic tone and the decrement of parasympathetic tone, which seems to meanthat autonomic nervous system plays a major role in compensating for disturbances of cardiovascular system due to it.
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of breath-counting meditation (BCM) and deep breathing (DB) on heart rate variability (HRV). These breathing techniques have the characteristics of non-paced and self-controlled breathings, resulting in less increase of HRV. We also compared BCM and DB with usual breathing (UB) or relaxing breathing (RB) which can reveal the characteristics of those. Methods: 83 healthy volunteers sitting in chairs performed non-paced breathing; UB, RB, BCM, and DB each for 5 minutes. One minute of relaxation was permitted between breathings. Participants surfed the internet sitting in front of a computer during UB, while for RB, they remained steady with eyes closed. For BCM, they breathed inwardly counting from 1 to 10 repetitively, while they took a deep breath during DB. Physiological indices were simultaneously recorded with a biofeedback system. Results: Respiration rate, thoracic amplitude, and mean heart rate decreased in RB compared with UB, but there was no change in HRV. Respiration rate in BCM and DB was lower than that in UB or RB, and the amplitude of thorax or abdomen, and HRV all increased (p<0.05). However, mean heart rate and skin conductance decreased in BCM compared with UB (p<0.05), whereas those were no different between DB and UB. Conclusion: BCM, just concentrating mentally on breathing with counting each breath, can increase HRV with less sympathetic activation, while DB, actively moving thorax and abdomen for achieving the deepest respiration rate, can greatly raise HRV with the maintenance of mean vagal or sympathetic tone.
This study was performed to evaluate the effect of heat stress on the status of physiological responses, blood parameter, serum T3 and cortisol, and heat shock proteins (HSP 27, 70, and 90) of Hanwoo cattle. Six Hanwoo steers (242.8 ± 7.2 kg of BW) were housed in the climate-controlled respiration chambers. The experiment consisted of 7 days (control; 0 day) at thermoneutral (air temperature (Ta) of 15℃ and relative humidity (RH) of 60%; temperature-humidity index (THI) = 64), and by 3 and 6 days (treatment groups) at heat stress (Ta of 35℃ and RH of 60%; THI = 87). Body temperature of each parts (frank, rump, perineum and foot) and rectal temperature elevated in heat stress groups (3 days and 6 days) than the control group (0 day). Respiration rates increased in 3 days and 6 days (88.5 ± 0.96 bpm and 86.3 ± 0.63 bpm, respectively) from 0 days (39.5 ± 0.65 bpm). Feed intake significantly decreased in heat stress groups (3 days and 6 days, 3.7 ± 0.14 kg and 4.0 ± 0.15 kg, respectively) than the control group (0 day, 5.0 ± 0.00 kg). In addition, final BW significantly decreased in heat stress groups (3 days and 6 days, 211.8 ± 4.75 kg and 215.5 ± 3.50 kg, respectively) than the control group (0 day, 240.0 ± 25.00 kg). However, heat stress has no significant effect on blood parameter, serum T3 and cortisol. Nevertheless, heat stress increased HSPs mRNA expression in liver tissue, and serum concentration of HSPs. Despite Hanwoo cattle may have high adaptive ability to heat stress, our results suggested that heat stress directly effect on body temperature and respiration rate as well as serum and tissue HSPs. Therefore, we are recommended that HSPs could be the most appropriate indicators of Hanwoo cattle response to heat stress.
