Radiation-induced transformation of Hafnium composition

  • The safety and efficiency of nuclear reactors largely depend on the monitoring and control of nuclear radiation. Due to the unique nuclear-physical characteristics, Hf is one of the most promising materials for the manufacturing of the control rods and the emitters of neutron detectors. It is proposed to use the Compton neutron detector with the emitter made of Hf in the In-core Instrumentation System (ICIS) for monitoring the neutron field. The main advantages of such a detector in comparison the conventional β-emission sensors are the possibility of reaching of a higher cumulative radiation dose and the absence of signal delays. The response time of the detection is extremely important when a nuclear reactor is operating near its critical operational parameters. Taking Hf as an example, the general principles for calculating the chains of materials transformation under neutron irradiation are reported. The influence of 179m1Hf on the Hf composition changing dynamics and the process of transmutants' (Ta, W) generation were determined. The effect of these processes on the absorbing properties of Hf, which inevitably predetermine the lifetime of the detector and its ability to generate a signal, is estimated.

  • The KN-12 cask is designed to transport 12 PWR spent nuclear fuels and to comply with the requirements of Korea Atomic Energy Act, IAEA Safety Standards Series No.57-1 and US 10 CFR Part 71 for a Type B(U)F package. It provides containment, radiation shielding, structural integrity, criticality control and heat removal for normal transport and hypothetical accident conditions. W.H 14$\times$14, 16$\times$16 and 17$\times$17 fuel assemblies with maximum allowable initial enrichment of 5.0 wt.%, maximum average burn-up of 50,000 MWD/MTU and minimum cooling time of 7 years being used in Korea will be loaded and subsequently transported under dry and wet conditions. A forged cylindrical cask body which constitutes the containment vessel is closed by a cask lid. Polyethylene rods for neutron shielding are arranged in two rows of longitudinal bore holes in the cask body wall. A fuel basket to accommodate up to 12 PWR fuel assemblies provides support of the fuels, control of criticality and a path to dissipate heat. Impact limiters to absorb the impact energy under the hypothetical accident conditions are attacked at the top and at the bottom side of the cask during transport. Handling weight loaded with water is 74.8 tons and transport weight loaded with water with the impact limiters is 84.3 tons. The cask will be licensed in accordance with Korea Atomic Energy Act 3nd fabricated in Korea in accordance with ASME B&PV Code Section 111, Division 3.

Development and verification of a Monte Carlo two-step method for lead-based fast reactor neutronics analysis

  • With the rise of economic and safety standards for nuclear reactors, new concepts of Gen-IV reactors and modular reactors showed more complex designs that challenge current tools for reactor physics analysis. A Monte Carlo (MC) two-step method was proposed in this work. This calculation scheme uses the continuous-energy MC method to generate multi-group cross-sections from heterogeneous models. The multi-group MC method, which can adapt locally-heterogeneous models, is used in the core calculation step. This calculation scheme is verified using a Gen-IV modular lead-based fast reactor (LFR) benchmark case. The influence of homogenized patterns, scatter approximations, flux separable approximation, and local heterogeneity in core calculation on simulation results are investigated. Results showed that the cross-sections generated using the 3D assembly model with a locally heterogeneous representation of control rods lead to an accurate estimation with less than 270 pcm bias in core reactivity, 0.5% bias in control rod worth, and 1.5% bias on power distribution. The study verified the applicability of multi-group cross-sections generated with the MC method for LFR analysis. The study also proved the feasibility of multi-group MC in core calculation with local heterogeneity, which saves 85% time compared to the continuous-energy MC.

Effect of Chewable tablet containing Sodium Fluoride on Gingival inflammation and Plaque Accumulation (불화나트륨을 함유한 저작성 정제의 치태제거 및 치은염 완화 효과에 관한 임상시험)

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect a chewable tablet containing sodium flouride and lauroyl sodium sulfate on removing plaque and inhibiting gingival inflammation. A randomized parallel study was designed. 100 voluteers participated in the study. There were two test groups each with 30 subject. Test group A was instructed to brush once in the morning, and to use the tablet once in the afternoon and once in the evening. Test group B was instructed to use the tablet three times a day without brushing. There were two control groups each with 20 subjects. Control group A was instructed to brush once in the morning only. Control group B was instructed not to brush all. Two weeks before the test period, the subjects received through tooth cleaning and polishing. At baseline, GI, PI, BOP, and GCF of the Ramfjord teeth were measured in all groups. Bacteria culture was done with the plaque sampled from tooth with the deepest pocket. After 5 days, clinical indices were measured and the bacterial culture was repeated. Control group B was dropped from the study after this period. All the other groups remained and the indices and the culture was repeated after 2 weeks, and 3weeks. Also whether the oral mucosa showed signs of irritation was monitored throughout the test period. Test group A showed less PI, GI, BOP, probing depth, GCF than test group B or control group A. Especially, PI and the BOP was significantly less than that of the group that was instructed to brush once a day. This implies that the added use of this tablet aids in plaque removal in people who brush just once a day. Test group A showed increase of cocci, decrease of motile rods, and decrease of spirochetes after 14-21 days. And this was significantly different from the control group A. At no time of the test period did any of the subjects show signs of irritation of the oral mucosa or adverse reactions. Following conclusions could be obtained from this study. This chewable tablet for enhanced oral hygiene could be used as an adjunct to oral hygiene in people who do not brush adequately. The use of this tablet decreased the number of subgingival bacteria, and this could be effective in plaque removal and for prevention of gingival inflammation.

Effects of 2% minocycline gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planing on the treatment of adult periodontitis (치근면 활택술후 2% minocycline gel의 치료효과)

  • The objective of the present study was to evaluate the clinical and microbiological effects of scaling and root planing combined with local application of 2% minocycline gel to patients with moderate to advanced chronic adult periodontitis. 27 healthy patients with moderate to advanced chronic adult periodontitis were enrolled in the study. The quadrants that had 2 or more teeth with $5{\sim}8mm$ probing pocket depth and radiographic evidence of alveolar bone loss were selected and divided into test side and control side according to the splitmouth design. All patients received standardized oral hygiene instructions at the beginning of the study. Subsequently scaling and root plaining was performed on all remaining teeth until 0 week. The 2% minocycline gel was applied to periodontal pocket at 0, 1, 2, 3week in the test side. The normal saline was irrigated subgingivally for about 30 seconds in the control side. The clinical and microbiological analysis was carried out at 0, 4, 8, and 12weeks. The results of this st udy were as follows; 1.2% minocycline gel delivered subgingivally as an adjunct to scaling and root planing provided benefit in reducing sulcular bleeding index and pocket depth than the use of normal saline. 2. The relative proportion of cocci and non-motile bacteria was increased in the test and control groups with time, and there was no statistically significantdifference between two groups. 3. The proportion of spirochetes was slowly reduced in the control group, but, inthe test group, they were remarkably reduced from the 4th week, and there was a statistically significant difference between two groups. 4. In both groups, the relative proportion of motile rods was notably decreasedat the beginning of the study, and remained until 12th week in the test group,but, in the control group, they were slowly increased from the 4th weekand finally similar to that of the initial examination. In conclusion, local application of 2% minocycline gel may be effective in the clinical and microbiological aspects as an adjunct to scaling and root planing in periodontal disease sites.

Analysis of Nuclear Power Plant Load Follow Operation by Temperature Reduction Method (냉각재 온도 감소 장식에 의한 원자력발전소 부하 추종 운전 해석)

  • The inlet coolant temperature reduction technique has been used to extend the load follow operation further in the end-of-cycle-life(EOL). In order to simulate the technique and calculate the nuclear characteristics of a PWR core according to the load follow operation, the three dimensional computing system has been established. The analysis was performed in both MINB and SPINR modes of typical 12-3-6-3 locad follow operation for the EOL of KNU-1 plant. Moreover, the capability of return-to-power has been also tested for those two modes with the system analysis by the RETRAN-02 code. The results show that it has no difficulty to extend the load follow operation further in the EOL by applying the inlet coolant temprature reduction, and also the spinning reserve capacity(SRC) increases by 13% in MINB mode and 14% in SPINR mode Bore that used by control rods only, for 14$^{\circ}$ F drop in the inlet temperature.

Experimental Study on Structural Behavior of Joints for Precast Concrete Segment (프리캐스트 콘크리트 세그먼트 접합부의 구조거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The use of precast concrete segments facilitates quality control and reduces construction cost and period. However, as a construction method it has limited applicability, for it demonstrates structurally disadvantageous behaviors due to stress concentration and large displacement in the joint of assembled segments. This paper proposes a precast segment joint with improved structural performance, and experimentally assesses the structural performance of the proposed joint in terms of crack and failure modes, deformation, maximum load and displacement ductility. In consideration of constructability and structural performance, this paper suggests different types of joint with shear key, post tension and steel rods as variables, and performs a static loading test on them. The test results show that the performance of SGSP specimens is around 84% that of a monolithic specimen in terms of the maximum load, while their ductility behaviors are better than the monolithic specimen. This result confirms the improved structural performance and applicability of the proposed joint.

Identification of an Antagonistic Bacterium, KJ1R5, for Biological Control of Phytophthora Blight of Pepper

  • An antagonistic bacterium, KJ1R5,, to Phytophthora capsici was obtained from root interior of a healthy pepper plant. To identify the bacterial antagonist, 16S rDNA sequence analysis, Biolog system, fatty acid methyl-esters (FAMEs), and physiological and biochemical characterization were conducted. The determined 165 rDNA sequence of KJ1R5, showed higher similarities to those of a group consisting of several Chryseobacterium strains with 95.2, 95.2, and 95,1% similarity to C. defluvii, Chryseobacterium sp. FR2, and C. scophthalmum, respectively, In addition, Halounella gailinarum, Bergeyella zoohelcum, and Riemerella anatipestifer are another group for KJ1R5, with 94.1, 89.7, and 87.2% similarities, respectively When identification of the antagonistic bacterium, KJ1R5, was conducted using BIOLOG system, the strain KJ1R5, was identified as Flavobacterium tirrenicum (similarity; 0.75%). Fatty acid profiles of the strain KJ1R5, were composed mainly of iso-17:0 w9c and iso-15:0 and identified as Chryseobacterium balustinum (similarity 0.524%). KJ1R5, was Gram-negative, regular short rods ranging from 0.8 $\mu\textrm{m}$ to 1.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and had no flagella. Phenotypic characterization of the antagonistic bacterium indicated that KJ1R5, were included in the genus Chreseobacterium, which belongs to the family Flavobacteriaceae. The strain was distinguished from these six existing species. These results indicated that strain might be placed as a new species in the genus Chryseobacterium.

  • Recently the construction of residential buildings faces many difficulties due to the shortage of building materials and works. Simplifying the stage of processing and assembling reinforcing rods and increasing the efficiency of them in reinforced concrete construction can be used to settle the difficulties. In the respect, structural wire-fabric and loop wire-fabric is utilized. The purpose of this study, on condition of being $210kg/cm^2$ concrete strength, is to analyze the structural and flexural properties of one-way concrete slabs by testing with different reinforcing type, tensile steel ratio based with minimum steel ratio, boundary condition and splice length which affect the maximum width of crack and ductility factor. From the test results, the ductility factor is approved that the slabs using deformed bar were much better than that using wire-fabric, and 30D of splice length was appropriate in the slabs as splice length. In the control of the maximum crack width the slabs using wire-fabric and loop wire-fabric were much better than that using deformed bar.

NFlex Dynamic Stabilization System : Two-Year Clinical Outcomes of Multi-Center Study

  • Objective : Pedicle-based dynamic stabilization systems, in which semi-rigid rods or cords are used to restrict or control spinal segmental motion, aim to reduce or eliminate the drawbacks associated with rigid fusion. In this study, we analyzed the two-year clinical outcomes of patients treated with the NFlex (Synthes Spine, Inc.), a pedicle-based dynamic stabilization system. Methods : Five sites participated in a retrospective study of 72 consecutive patients who underwent NFlex stabilization. Of these 72 patients, 65 were available for 2-year follow-up. Patients were included based on the presence of degenerative disc disease (29 patients), degenerative spondylolisthesis (16 patients), lumbar stenosis (9 patients), adjacent segment degeneration (6 patients), and degenerative lumbar scoliosis (5 patients). The clinical outcome measures at each assessment were Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) to measure back pain, and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) to measure functional status. Radiographic assessments included evidence of instrumentation failure or screw loosening. Results : Sixty-five patients (26 men and 39 women) with a mean age of 54.5 years were included. Mean follow-up was 25.6 months. The mean VAS score improved from 8.1 preoperatively to 3.8 postoperatively, representing a 53% improvement, and the ODI score from 44.5 to 21.8, representing a 51% improvement. Improvements in pain and disability scores were statistically significant. Three implant-related complications were observed. Conclusion : Posterior pedicle-based dynamic stabilization using the NFlex system seems effective in improving pain and functional scores, with sustained clinical improvement after two years. With appropriate patient selection, it may be considered an effective alternative to rigid fusion.
