This study was aimed at investigating the correlation between Homocysteine and Serum Lipids in Cerebral Infarction Patients. This study was done with 69 cases of cerebral infarction patients who admitted to department of the internal medicine Jeonju Oriental Medical hospital, Wonkwang University from June in 2007 to May in 2008 and with 46 people without 6 major risk factors (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, ischemic heart disease, past history of CVA and TIA) as control group recruited at department of the internal medicine Iksan Oriental Medical hospital, Wonkwang University from March in 2008 to March in 2008. The general characteristics along with blood homocysteine and serum lipids are recorded and analyzed according to blood homocysteine levels. A total of 69 patients and 46 control groups were included in the trial. In cerebral infarction patients, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride were increased according to concentration of homocysteine, but no statistical significance was noted in this study. The Correlation between Homocysteine and Serum Lipids was not proven. Further research on the subject is needed.
The effect of saponin and non-saponin of Panax Red Ginseng on the blood pressure and nitric oxide production were investigated in the conscious free moving one-kidney, one-clip Goldbaltt hypertensive (lK, 1C-GBH) rats. Mean blood pressure in the control and lK, 1C-GBH rats was decreased by the administration of ginseng saponin (100 mg/kg, i.v.). The hypotensive effect induced by ginseng saponin was reached maximum at 2-4 minutes and was slowly recovered to the initial level of blood pressure. Also ginseng saponin induced reflex tachycardia in the conscious both rats. Contrast to the response induced by ginseng saponin, hypotensive effect induced by non-saponin of panax ginseng is minimal. Plasma nitric oxide concentration was increased by the treatment of ginseng saponin (100 mg/kg, i.p for 5 days) in both rats. It has been shown by western blotting that the expression level of the protein for endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in the aorta of rats was not increased by the treatment of ginseng saponin (100 mg/kg, i.p). However, eNOS activity in aortic homogenates of both rats were increased by the treatment of ginseng saponins. From the above results, the hypotensive effect of saponin was greater than that of non-saponin of Panax Red Ginseng. The lowering effect of blood pressure by ginseng saponin may be due to the increase of plasma nitric oxide concentration via the increase of endothelial nitric oxide synthase activity in the renovascular hypertensive and control rats.

Objective : Barbiturate coma therapy (BCT) is a useful method to control increased intracranial pressure (IICP) patients. However, the complications such as hypotension and hypokalemia have caused conditions that stopped BCT early. The complications of low dose BCT with $Bispectral^{TM}$ index (BIS) monitoring and those of high dose BCT without BIS monitoring have been compared to evaluate the efficacy of low dose BCT with BIS monitoring. Methods : We analyzed 39 patients with high dose BCT group (21 patients) and low dose BCT group (18 patients). Because BIS value of 40-60 is general anesthesia score, we have adjusted the target dose of thiopental to maintain the BIS score of 40-60. Therefore, dose of thiopental was kept 1.3 to 2.6 mg/kg/hour during low dose BCT. However, high dose BCT consisted of 5 mg/kg/hour without BIS monitoing. Results : The protocol of BCT was successful in 72.2% and 38.1% of low dose and high dose BCT groups, respectively. The complications such as QT prolongation, hypotension and cardiac arrest have caused conditions that stopped BCT early. Hypokalemia showed the highest incidence rate in complications of both BCT. The descent in potassium level were $0.63{\pm}0.26$ in low dose group, and $1.31{\pm}0.48$ in high dose group. The treatment durations were $4.89{\pm}1.68$ days and $3.38{\pm}1.24$ days in low dose BCT and high dose BCT, respectively. Conclusion : It was proved that low dose BCT showed less severe complications than high dose BCT. Low dose BCT with BIS monitoring provided enough duration of BCT possible to control ICP.
In this study, we evaluated the antidiabetic effect of submerged culture of Ceriporia lacerata mycelium (CL01) on glucose uptake and the expression of mRNA and protein of major signal markers of insulin signaling pathway in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. After 3T3-L1 adipocytes were pre-treated by CL01 (0, 2, 10 mg/ml) for 8 hours, followed with treatment of insulin, the glucose uptake levels significantly increased by more 55.1%, 94.4% than negative control respectively (p<0.01, 0.001) in a dose-dependent manner. However, in case of CL01 pre-treatment without insulin, the glucose uptake did not increase compared with insulin-treated 3T3-L1. Also we demonstrated that the protein expression levels of pIR β, pAkt, pPI3K and pAMPK and the mRNA expression levels of GLUT4 in adipocytes inducing insulin resistance increased in CL01-treated group compared with negative control. These results demonstrated that CL01 affected glucose metabolism and the protein and gene expression through insulin signaling pathway, and increased glucose uptake levels effectively. More than 90% of those who have suffered for type 2 diabetes are more likely to have from hyperinsulinemia, hypertension, obesity and etc. because of altered insulin signaling pathway. So, it is probably considered that intake of CL01 may treat type 2 diabetes by normalization of insulin signaling pathway, and it will provide useful evidences regarding a mechanism for cure of type 2 diabetes.

In this study, extracts from Caragana sinica flowers and leaves were tested for antioxidant and angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitory activities, along with xanthine oxidase, tyrosinase, elastase, and astringent effects. Total phenolic compounds of acetone extracts from Caragana sinica flowers and leaves were the highest at 3.42 and 2.98 mg/g, respectively, when various extraction solvents were used. Optimal conditions for extraction of phenolic compounds from Caragana sinica leaves and flowers were 70% ethanol for 18 hr. DPPH scavenging activities were the highest in 70% ethanol extracts of Caragana sinica. ABTS radical cation decolorization values of 70% ethanol extracts were higher than those 60% ethanol extracts at 74%. Antioxidant protection factor was 1.2 PF in 70% ethanol extracts from Caragana sinica flowers and leaves. TBARS was lower than that of control (0.54 ${\mu}M$) in all sections. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitory activity of Caragana sinica flower extract was 80~90% at a phenolic concentration of 0.2~1.0 mg/mL, whereas xanthin oxidase inhibitory activity of Caragana sinica leaf extract was higher than that of flower extract. Tyrosinase inhibitory activity, which is related to skin-whitening, was above 20%, whereas elastase inhibitory activity related to anti-wrinkle effect was above 50% at a phenolic concentration of 0.8 mg/mL. Astringent effects of Caragana sinica flower and leaf extracts were higher than tannic acid as a control at an equivalent concentration. This result suggests that extracts from Caragana sinica flowers and leaves are suitable as functional foods having anti-hypertension, anti-gout, and medicinal cosmetic activities, including whitening and anti-wrinkle effects.

Gastrodia elata Blume often has been used for the treatment of headaches, convulsions, hypertension, and neurodegenerative diseases. The main active constituents are gastrodin, 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol, vanillyl alcohol, 4-hydroxybenzylaldehyde and parishin A, B, C and E. Because Gastrodia elata has also unacceptable off-odor (swine barnyard-like) for food, there is a need to reduce it as well as allow for greater utilization as a functional food materials. In this study, a major off-odor producing substance of Gastrodia elata was fractionated by steam distillation and silica gel column chromatography. The substance was identified as p-cresol(4-methyl phenol) by GC-MS analysis and comparison of the retention time with that of an authentic compound in GC. The content of p-cresol in fermented Gastrodia elata was decreased. A fermented sample of Latobacillus sakei for 2 days was reduced to 54.7%, when compared with a unfermented sample. The five parishin derivatives in Gastrodia elata were identified by HPLC-MS analyses, and a comparison of HPLC retention times with those of authentic compounds. When compared with parishin derivatives of an unfermented Gastrodia elata, those of Gastrodia elata fermented by L. sakei, increased to 18.3% for 2 days. Increases of about 14.0~38.4% of the total phenolic compounds and 57.4~77.3% total flavonoids were found in fermented extracts, by 3 lactic acid bacteria strains. They were compared with $97.1{\pm}2.9{\mu}g/g$ and $40.9{\pm}2.0{\mu}g/g$ in the unfermented control, respectively. The extracts of Gastrodia elata Blume that were fermented by lactic acid bacteria had higher DPPH free radical scavenging activity and FRAP reducing power than the unfermented control.

Background: It is difficult to treat tourniquet-induced hypertension despite adequate anesthesia, and the mechanism of that is not known. And it may be possible that intraoperative continuous infusion of opioid induces preemptive analgesia postoperatively. We investigated the effect of intraoperative continuous i.v. fentanyl on tourniquet induced cardiovascular changes and postoperative preemptive analgesia in total knee replacements. Methods: Sixty patients were randomly assigned to two groups; In study group ($1.5{\mu}g/kg$ loading and $0.5{\mu}g/kg/hr$ continuous infusion of fentanyl before skin incision and tourniquet inflation) and control group (no treatment). Anesthesia was maintained with enflurane (1-2 MAC) and 50% nitrous oxide in oxygen. Arterial pressure and heart rate were compared between two groups. They received postoperative pain treatment with patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) with fentanyl during the postoperative 48 hours after total knee replacement. Visual analog scale (VAS) scores at either rest or movement were used to assess pain. Total fentanyl dose delivered, number of PCA requests, supplemental analgesics, overall satisfaction score and adverse events were evaluated. Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups on cardiovascular changes by tourniquet induced pain effect. VAS, PCA delivered dose and PCA demands at movement in the 24-48 hour decreased in study group compared with control group (P < 0.05). But there were no significant differences between the two groups on the other time periods except 24-48 hour's patient satisfaction and adverse events. Conclusions: We suggest that intraoperative continuous i.v. fentanyl infusion dose not affect cardiovascular change by tourniquet induced pain. But it may induce preemptive analgesia postoperatively.
This study investigated the effect of endurance exercises on blood pressure, angiogenesis, and the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in the skeletal muscle of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Five week old SHRs and Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) were randomly divided into 3 groups: Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY, n=9), SHR control (SHR-C, n=9), and SHR endurance exercise training (SHR-E, n=9). Endurance exercise training was performed on a treadmill (12-20 m/min, 0% grade, 60 min/day, 5 days/week, 16 weeks). Systolic blood pressure was monitored with the tail-cuff method. The expression of VEGF protein and capillary density were identified using western blotting and H&E staining in the soleus muscle, respectively. Systolic blood pressure was reduced by endurance exercise in SHR ($p$ <0.05). The capillary density of skeletal muscles in SHR-C was lower than in WKY ($p$ <0.05), but it was recovered by endurance exercise training (SHR-E) compared to SHR-C ($p$ <0.05), and VEGF protein was also increased by endurance exercise training compared to SHR-C ($p$ <0.05). These data suggest that the enhancement of capillary density via an increase of VEGF expression in skeletal muscles by endurance exercise training could be an important factor to inhibit blood pressure elevation in SHR.
In this study, we designed to confirm the dietary effect of anti-obesity of fermented soybean curd residue (FSCR; SCR-Meju; Biji-meju) by A. oryzae, which is well known as a Korean traditional meju microbe. We observed that body weight gain, serum and hepatic lipid profile, as well as the activity of ROS generating enzyme and ROS scavenging enzyme in high-fat diet induced obese mice fed experimental diet (SCR and SCR-meju). Body weight gain and epididymal fat weight of HC (high-fat diet control) was markedly higher than that of NC (Normal control). Conversely, body weight gain and epididymal fat weight of the SCR (Biji) and SCR-meju (Biji-meju) group was significantly lower than that of HC; these of the SCR-meju group was lower than that of the SCR group. Furthermore, serum TG and total-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol contents of SCR and SCR-meju groups were lower than that of HC, and HDL-cholesterol level of the SCR-meju group was significantly higher than that of HC. In conclusion, although precise mechanisms of the antiobese effects of SCR-meju in this study are unknown, the present study provides an experimental evidence that SCR-meju may prevent obesity and obesity related metabolic syndromes, such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension and diabetes, and liver disease by high-fat diet. Nevertheless, further study in this filed will be needed.
The primary objective of this study was to determine the effects of abalone in reducing blood pressure and increasing anti-coagulant capacity. The serum angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) activities of rats on an abalone-supplemented diet did not significantly differ from the ACE levels of rats on a normal diet, at any time (before the experiment, or 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks, after commencement of the abalone diet) during the experiment. This result showed that abalone-supplemented diets had no effect on the activity of ACE, which controls blood pressure. To determine if an abalone-containing diet might increase anti-coagulant capacity, both prothrombin (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) levels were measured. The PT levels of control rats remained constant throughout the experiment. In rats fed the abalone-containing diet, PT levels increased with time, and the increase became statistically significant after 2 weeks, when compared to pre-trial PT levels. Control rats showed no significant change in APTT levels over time. The rats fed abalone, however, showed significant differences in APTT levels. Specifically, when pre-trial APTT levels were compared with 4-week levels, and when 1-week levels were compared with 4-week levels, the differences attained statistical significance. These results indicate that an abalone-supplemented diet may inhibit blood coagulation in normal rats. The results of this study prove the inherent health value of abalone, and may encourage investment in the seafood industry. Future studies will explore other possible beneficial effects of abalone, apart from the anti-hypertension and anti-coagulant effects examined above.
