PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to select the proper sealing method and to see the performance of the saw and seal method for concrete rehabilitation based on accelerated pavement testings and lab tests. METHODS : Two accelerated pavement testings were conducted. One is to select proper sealing method of the asphalt joints and the other is to see the performance of the saw and seal method. Lab tests were conducted to select proper sealing method and a test section was constructed to see the field performance. RESULTS : The result of the first accelerated pavement testing indicated that the adhesive preformed sealants showed good performance when asphalt layer was rutted and in terms preventing from water infiltration. The second acceleration test indicated that the saw and seal method using the adhesive preformed sealant showed much better performance than the control. In the lab test bitumen, rubber and epoxy showed good performance as the adhesive. CONCLUSIONS : Saw and Seal method using the adhesive preformed sealant would markedly reduce the joint damage on the asphalt overlay.
In this research, considering the practical conditions at field, thermal cracking method was suggested based on the comparative analysis between predicted value and actual value obtained from the actual structure member with optimum mix design. The optimum mix design was deduced from the various mix designs with various proportions of cementitious binder for upper and lower placement lifts of mat-foundation mass concrete. Therefore, it can be stated that applying low heat mix design and different heating technique between upper and lower placement lifts for mass concrete are efficient to control the thermal cracking. As future issues, based on the interpretation result value, we will select the optimal combination that is applied specifically to the actual site, and deeply analyze the correlation between the measured value and the analysis value through the combination and the test of the actual structure.
This paper presents the results of integrity assessment for the cracks happened in reactor vessel upper head penetration nozzles. The crack morphology for a boat sample from crack area was analyzed through microscope. The stress condition including weld residual stress around crack was analyzed using finite element analysis. From the results of crack morphology and stress condition, the crack was concluded as primary water stress corrosion cracking. The integrity of the cracked nozzle was assessed by the methodology provided in ASME Section XI. According to the assessment results, the remaining life of the cracked nozzle was 1.43 yrs. and the plant decided to repair it.
High performance concrete (HPC) has been extensively used in thin overlay for repair purpose due to its excellent strength and durability. This paper presents an experiment, where the sensor-instrumented HPC overlays have been followed by dynamic strain and moisture content monitoring for 1 year, under normal traffic. The vibrating wire and soil moisture sensors were embedded in overlay before construction. Four given HPC mixes (2 original mixes and their shrinkage-modified mixes) were used for overlays to contrast the strain and moisture results. A calibration method to accurately measure the moisture content for a given concrete mixture using soil moisture sensor was established. The monitoring results indicated that the modified mixes performed much better than the original mixes in shrinkage cracking control. Weather condition and concrete maturity at early age greatly affected the strain in concrete. The strain in HPC overlay was primarily in longitudinal direction, leading to transverse cracks. Additionally, the most moisture loss in concrete occurred at early age. Its rate was very dependent on weather. After one year, cracking survey was carried out by vision to verify the strain direction and no cracks observed in shrinkage modified mixes.
Since the cement-water reaction is exothermic by nature, the temperature rise within a large concrete mass. Significant tensile stresses may develop from the volumn change associated with the increase and decrease of the temperature with the mass concrete. These thermal stresses will cause temperature-related cracking in mass concrete structures. These typical type of mass concrete include mat foundation, bridge piers, thich walls, box type walls, tunnel linings, etc. Crack control methods can be considered at such stages as designing, selecting the materials, and detailing the construction method. In this paper, the effect of placing of crack control joint or construction joint was analysed by a three dimensional finite element method. As a result, using this method, crack control can be easily performed for structures such as wall-type structures.
