  • Microfiltration with in-line rapid coagulation for drinking water production was examined. The in-line rapid coagulation was conducted using newly developed mixing device instantaneous flash mixer. The flux decline during membrane filtration was monitored with coagulant dosage varied. Flux decline was minimized at 1.1mg/L of coagulant dosage, where streaming potential of coagulated water was near zero. The optimum dosage for the process control was explained by dimensionless distance (${\kappa}{\times}a$) of particle pairs, obtained from electrophoresis parameter describing electrostatic repulsion relative to Van der Waals energy between particle pairs in the pre-coagulated water.

  • Generally, HDDs are widely used as data storage device in office, home and mobile machineries. So, it is used for various applications or tasks, such as file copy, file download, music and movie play etc., in various environment. In spite of this kind of varieties in tasks and environment in which HDDs perform, most commercial HDDs hardly control its operations adaptively to these varieties. Thus, it is preferred to optimize the performance and energy consumption of HDDs according to the task and/or the environment. So, this paper proposes a new fuzzy inference algorithm which adaptively controls HDDs operations and may also easily be implemented as the firmware of HDDs and run in the restricted environment such as embedded systems.

  • This paper presents an overview of the concepts of optimal feeder design in relation to the loading of bulk solids for Automatic filling system that should be control the amount of goods and packaging to seal. Feeder modular device, important parts of the package, so in order to perform a conceptual design optimization techniques are applied in two steps. First of all derive the problems through structural analysis for the conceptual model of vibrating feeder. Secondly derive reasonable design model based on the results of the structural analysis of modified boundary shape and then verify it. The proposed system has the following goal that is satisfies the dynamic stability with minimum weight and optimization of the shape. As a result, the weight reduction of feeder is 2.1% and 7% increase in the natural frequency.

  • An optimal design method for a structural control system considering load variations due to their uncertain characteristics is studied in this paper. The conventional design problem for a control system generally deals with the optimization problem of a structural control system and interaction between the structure and the control device. This study deals with the optimization problem of a load-structure-control system and the more complicated interactions with each other. The problem of finding the load that maximizes the structural responses and the structural control system that minimizes the responses simultaneously is formulated as the min-max problem. In order to effectively obtain the optimal design variables, a co-evolutionary algorithm is adopted and, as a result, an optimal design procedure for the linear structural control system with uncertain dynamic characteristics is proposed. The example design and simulated results of an earthquake excited structure validates the proposed method.

  • This paper puts forward an advanced consideration on the design of scaled multiple-gate FET (MuGFET); the aspect ratio ($R_{h/w}$) of the fin height (h) to fin width (w) of MuGFET is considered with the aid of 3-D device simulations. Since any change in the aspect ratio must consider the trade-off between drivability and short-channel effects, it is shown that optimization of the aspect ratio is essential in designing MuGFET's. It is clearly seen that the triple-gate (TG) FET is superior to the conventional FinFET from the viewpoints of drivability and short-channel effects as was to be expected. It can be concluded that the guideline of w < L/3, where L is the channel length, is essential to suppress the short-channel effects of TG-FET.

  • There are lots of literature about connected car system from industry and academia. The connected car is a smart car integrated with IT technology that is connected to people, vehicles and traffic management systems. It is important to V2I (vehicle to infrastructure) communication which is the connection between the vehicle and the infrastructure. CIM (cooperative intersection management) is a device to manage the communication between vehicle and infrastructure. In this paper, we analyze two intelligent vehicle control methods using CIM at non-signalized intersections. In the first method, a vehicle to pass through intersection needs to reserve a resource of intersection. In the second method, trajectory patterns on pre-planned vehicles are classified to pass through intersection. We analyze case studies of two methods to be implemented by DP(dynamic programming) and ACO(ant colony optimization) algorithms. The methods can be reasonably improved by placing importance on vehicles or controlling speeds of vehicles.

  • By integrating an active tuned mass damper (ATMD) and an inerter, the ATMDI has been proposed to attenuate undesirable oscillations of structures under the ground acceleration. Employing the mode generalized system, the dynamic magnification factors (DMF) of the structure-ATMDI system are formulated. The criterion can then be defined as the minimization of maximum values of the DMF of the controlled structure for optimum searching. By resorting to the defined criterion and the particle swarm optimization (PSO), the effects of varying the crucial parameters on the performance of ATMDI have been scrutinized in order to probe into its superiority. Furthermore, the results of both ATMD and tuned mass dampers inerter (TMDI) are included into consideration for comparing. Results corroborate that the ATMDI outperforms both ATMD and TMDI in terms of the effectiveness and robustness. Especially, the ATMDI may greatly reduce the demand on both the mass ratio and inerter mass ratio, thus being capable of further miniaturizing both the ATMD and TMDI. Likewise the miniaturized ATMDI still keeps nearly the same stroke as the TMDI with a larger mass ratio. Hence, the ATMDI is deemed to be a high performance control device with the miniaturization and suitable for super-tall buildings.

  • Adaptive control methods are studied for the Satellite to isolate vibration in spite of the nonlinear system dynamics and parameter uncertainties of disturbance. First, a centralized control scheme is developed based on the particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm and feedback theory to automatically tune controller gains. A simulation study of a 3 degree-of-freedom device was conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed control scheme. Next, since a centralized control scheme is hard to construct model dynamics and not goad at performance when controller and systems environment are easily changed, a decentralized control scheme is presented to avoid these defects of the centralized control scheme from the point of view of production and maintenance. It is based on the adaptive control methodologies to find PID controller parameters. Experiment studies were conducted to apply the adaptive control scheme and evaluate the performance of the proposed control scheme with those of the conventional control schemes.

  • To date, many viable smart base isolation systems have been proposed. In this study, a novel friction pendulum system (FPS) and an MR damper are employed as the isolator and supplemental damping device, respectively. A fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is used to modulate the MR damper. A genetic algorithm (GA) is used for optimization of the FLC. The main purpose of employing a GA is to determine appropriate fuzzy control rules as well to adjust parameters of the membership functions. To this end, a GA with a local improvement mechanism is applied. Neuro-fuzzy models are used to represent dynamic behavior of the MR damper and FPS. Effectiveness of the proposed method for optimal design of the FLC is judged based on computed responses to several historical earthquakes. It has been shown that the proposed method can find appropriate fuzzy rules and the GA-optimized FLC outperforms not only a passive control strategy but also a human-designed FLC and a conventional semi-active control algorithm.

  • This paper develops the theory for a novel fault-tolerant, permanent magnet biased, 4-active-pole, double plane, homopolar magnetic bearing. The Lagrange Multiplier optimization with equality constraints is utilized to calculate the optimal distribution matrices for the failed bearing. If any of the 4 coils fail, the remaining three coil currents change via a novel distribution matrix such that the same opposing pole, C-core type, control fluxes as those of the un-failed bearing are produced. Magnetic flux coupling in the magnetic bearing core and the optimal current distribution helps to produce the same c-core fluxes as those of unfailed bearing even if one coil suddenly fails. Thus the magnetic forces and the load capacity of the bearing remain invariant throughout the failure event. It is shown that the control fluxes to each active pole planes are successfully isolated. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the new theory.
