Control-structure interaction in piezoelectric deformable mirrors for adaptive optics

  • This paper discusses the shape control of deformable mirrors for Adaptive Optics in the dynamic range. The phenomenon of control-structure interaction appears when the mirror becomes large, lowering the natural frequencies $f_i$, and the control bandwidth $f_c$ increases to improve the performance, so that the condition $f_c{\ll}f_i$ is no longer satisfied. In this case, the control system tends to amplify the response of the flexible modes and the system may become unstable. The main parameters controlling the phenomenon are the frequency ratio $f_c/f_i$ and the structural damping ${\zeta}$. Robustness tests are developed which allow to evaluate a lower bound of the stability margin. Various passive and active strategies for damping augmentation are proposed and tested in simulation.

CAN을 이용한 발전계통의 제어 및 모니터링 기법 연구 (A Study on the Power System Control and Monitoring Technique Using CAN)

  • In this paper, we present a new control and monitoring technique for a power system using CAN(Controller Area Network). Feedback control systems having co'ntrol loops closed through a network(i.e. Ethernet, ControlNet, CAN) are called NCSs(Networked Control Systems). The major problem of NCSs is the variation of stability property according to time delay including network-induced delay and computation delay in nodes. We present a new stability analysis method of NCSs with time delay exploiting a state-space model of LTI(Linear Time Invariant) interconnected systems. The proposed method can determine a proper sampling period of NCSs that preserves stability performance even in NCSs with a dynamic controller. We design CAN nodes which can transmit control and monitoring data through CAN bus and apply these to NCSs for a power system. The results of the experiment validate effectiveness of our control and monitoring technique for a power system.

  • This paper describes the results of reliability prediction analysis of control rod control system, which is being developed as part of KNICS project. The results of reliability prediction indicate MTBF(Mean Time Between Failure) of cards for control rod control system. A purpose of reliability prediction is to evaluate MTBF of cards, identify the design drawbacks of cards, and propose design improvement to a designer to help design the more reliable control rod control system. This reliability prediction analysis used the the part count and part stress method in the basis of MIL-HDBK-217F.

DISCRETE-TIME ANALYSIS OF OVERLOAD CONTROL FOR BURSTY TRAFFIC

  • We consider a queueing system under overload control to support bursty traffic. The queueing system under overload control is modelled by MMBP/D1/K queue with two thresholds on buffer. Arrival of customer is assumed to be a Markov-modulated Bernoulli process (MMBP) by considering burstiness of traffic. Analysis is done in discrete-time case. Using the generating function method, we obtain the stationary queue length distribution. Finally, the loss probability and the waiting time distribution of a customer are given.

  • Hydraulic systems have severe nonlinearity inherently compared to other systems like electric control systems. Hence, precise modeling and analysis of the hydraulic control systems are not easy. In this study, the control performance of a hydraulic control system with a feedback linearization compensator and a disturbance observer was analyzed through experiments and numerical simulations. This study mainly focuses on the quantitative investigation of sensitivity on system uncertainties in the hydraulic control system. First, the sensitivity on the system uncertainty of the hydraulic control system with a Feedback Linearization - State Feedback Controller (FL-SFC) was quantitatively analyzed. In addition, the efficacy of a disturbance observer coupled with the FL-SFC for the hydraulic control system was verified in terms of overcoming the control performances deterioration owing to system uncertainty.

아웃리거 댐퍼 시스템의 고층건물 풍응답 진동제어 성능 평가 (Evaluation of Vibration Control Performance of Outrigger Damper System for Tall Buildings Subjected to Wind Loads)

  • Recently, the concept of damped outrigger system has been proposed for tall buildings. But, structural characteristics and design method of this system were not sufficiently investigated to date. In this study, the dynamic response control performance of outrigger damper has been analyzed. To this end, a simplified analysis model with outrigger damper system has been developed. An artificial wind of 1000 seconds with 0.1 second time steps was generated by using a Kaimal spectrum. Analysis results show that outrigger damper system is more effective up to 20-23% in the control of dynamic response compared to conventional outrigger system. The increase of outrigger damper capacity usually results in the improved control performance. However, it is necessary to select that proper stiffness and damping values of the outrigger damper system because, the outrigger damper having large capacity is result in heavy financial burden.

  • Performance analysis of a solid oxide fuel cell/micro gas turbine hybrid system is conducted at design-point and part-load conditions and its results are discussed in this study. With detailed considerations of the heat and mass transfer phenomena along various flow streams of the SOFC, the analysis based on a quasi-2D model reasonably predicts its performance at the design-point operating conditions. In case of part-load operations, performance of the hybrid system to three different operation modes(fuel only control, speed control, and VIGV control) is compared. It is found that the simultaneous control of both supplied fuel and air to the system with a variable MGT rotational speed mode is the optimum choice for the high performance operation. And then, the dynamic characteristics of a solid oxide fuel cell are briefly introduced.

An Analysis on Power Demand Reduction Effects of Demand Response Systems in the Smart Grid Environment in Korea

  • This study performed an analysis on power demand reduction effects exhibited by demand response programs, which are advanced from traditional demand-side management programs, in the smart grid environment. The target demand response systems for the analysis included incentive-based load control systems (2 month-ahead demand control system, 1~5 days ahead demand control system, and demand bidding system), which are currently implemented in Korea, and price-based demand response systems (mainly critical peak pricing system or real-time pricing system, currently not implemented, but representative demand response systems). Firstly, the status of the above systems at home and abroad was briefly examined. Next, energy saving effects and peak demand reduction effects of implementing the critical peak or real-time pricing systems, which are price-based demand response systems, and the existing incentive-based load control systems were estimated.

Electrical Engineering Design Method Based on Neural Network and Application of Automatic Control System

  • The existing electrical engineering design method and the dynamic objective function in the application process of automatic control system fail to meet the unbounded condition, which affects the control tracking accuracy. In order to improve the tracking control accuracy, this paper studies the electrical engineering design method based on neural network and the application of automatic control system. This paper analyzes the structure and working mechanism of electrical engineering automation control system by an automation control model with main control objectives. Following the analysis, an optimal solution of controllability design and fault-tolerant control is figured out. The automatic control power coefficient is distributed based on an ideal control effect of system. According to the distribution results, an automatic control algorithm is based on neural network for accurate control. The experimental results show that the electrical automation control method based on neural network can significantly reduce the control following error to 3.62%, improve the accuracy of the electrical automation tracking control, thus meeting the actual production needs of electrical engineering automation control system.

  • The Artificial Intelligence Lab of Industrial Engineering Department, Korea University is continuing to develop expert systems for quality control methods such as acceptance control, process control and reliability analysis. As a series of these efforts, The Artificial Intelligence Lab of Industrial Engineering Department, Korea University is continuing to develop expert systems for quality control methods such as acceptance control, process control and reliability analysis. As a series of these efforts, this paper concerns an expert system for design of experiment. The system includes factorial experiments, response surface methodology and Taguchi method. PROLOG is used as a language with dBASE III+ for the data base management system and C for calculations and graphics. This system selecting the appropriate method and analyzing the data obtained can be implemented on an IBM PC 386 or a higher level machine.
