  • This paper proposes two control strategies for the bidirectional Z-source inverters (BZSI) supplied by batteries for electric vehicle applications. The first control strategy utilizes the indirect field-oriented control (IFOC) method to control the induction motor speed. The proposed speed control strategy is able to control the motor speed from zero to the rated speed with the rated load torque in both motoring and regenerative braking modes. The IFOC is based on PWM voltage modulation with voltage decoupling compensation to insert the shoot-through state into the switching signals using the simple boost shoot-through control method. The parameters of the four PI controllers in the IFOC technique are designed based on the required dynamic specifications. The second control strategy uses a proportional plus resonance (PR) controller in the synchronous reference frame to control the AC current for connecting the BZSI to the grid during the battery charging/discharging mode. In both control strategies, a dual loop controller is proposed to control the capacitor voltage of the BZSI. This controller is designed based on a small signal model of the BZSI using a bode diagram. MATLAB simulations and experimental results verify the validity of the proposed control strategies during motoring, regenerative braking and grid connection operations.

  • This study investigates the impact of flipped classroom strategy in developing students' achievement and acquisition of life skills. The study employed a quasi-experimental design where students were divided into two groups: an experimental (N=22) and a control (N=22). The randomly selected and assigned sample consisted of sixth-year elementary school students studying English as a basic course. The findings revealed statistically significant differences between the two group's means in both achievement and life skills tests in favor of the experimental group. Students of the experimental group who studied using the flipped classroom strategy outperformed the control group who studied in the standard way in achieving the English language and in the life situations test, where the effect size of the use of the strategy was large in both dependent variables. The study is concluded with some recommendations to facilitate the use of flipped classroom strategy for EFL teachers. This can be achieved by training teachers on using the strategy and providing technological resources at schools to implement the strategy efficiently.

  • Path planning is an important task for optimal motion of a robot in structured or unstructured environment. The goal of this paper is to plan the shortest collision-free path in 3D, when a robot is navigated to pick up some tools or to repair some parts from various locations. To accomplish the goal of this paper, the Path Coordinator is proposed to have the capabilities of an obstacle avoidance strategy[3] and a traveling salesman problem strategy(TSP)[23]. The obstacle avoidance strategy is to plan the shortest collision-free path between each pair of n locations in 2D or in 3D. The TSP strategy is to compute a minimal system cost of a tour that is defined as a closed path navigating each location exactly once. The TSP strategy can be implemented by the Neural Network. The obstacle avoidance strategy in 2D can be implemented by the VGraph Algorithm. However, the VGraph Algorithm is not useful in 3D, because it can't compute the global optimality in 3D. Thus, the Path Coordinator is proposed to solve this problem, having the capabilities of selecting the optimal edges by the modified Genetic Algorithm[21] and computing the optimal nodes along the optimal edges by the Recursive Compensation Algorithm[5].

  • This paper presents a pulse-width adjustment (PWA) strategy for a novel bidirectional DC-DC boost converter to improve the performance of the dynamic inductor current response. This novel converter consists of three main components: a full-bridge converter (FBC), a high-frequency isolated transformer with large leakage inductance, and a three-level voltage-doubler rectifier (VDR). A number of scholars have analyzed the principles, such as the soft-switching performance and high-efficiency characteristic, of this converter based on pulse-width modulation plus phase-shift (PPS) control. It turns out that this converter is suitable for energy storage applications and exhibits good performance. However, the dynamic inductor current response processes of control variable adjustment is not analyzed in this converter. In fact, dc component may occur in the inductor current during its dynamic response process, which can influence the stability and reliability of the converter system. The dynamic responses under different operating modes of a conventional feedforward control are discussed in this paper. And a PWA strategy is proposed to enhance the dynamic inductor current response performance of the converter. This paper gives a detailed design and implementation of the PWA strategy. The proposed strategy is verified through a series of simulation and experimental results.

  • Dokdo issue reaches beyond economic and security interest to Koreans, as it is regarded as symbol of her independence. Albeit the fact that Japan has merely no legitimate title over Dokdo, Japan has been tenaciously insisting their jurisdiction over Dokdo since the independence of Korea. Under such circumstances, public outrage towards Japan is most certainly understandable. Yet, mere outrage itself, lacking in logic and factual grounds, can contribute little if not any, to the desirable solution of the problem. Precedents reveal that dealing maritime issues amid lack of profound understanding in international law has often led to undesirable results, such as the inclusion of Dokdo in the Joint Management Fisheries Zone in 1999 Korea-Japan Fisheries Agreement. In a sense, adroit use of international law is a critical element in preserving Korea's sovereign rights against persistent Japanese plans to rob Dokdo once again. The Dokdo issue is inextricably bound to international law; the legal status of Dokdo as island, the equitable solution of maritime boundary delimitation and effective control, existence of dispute. Yet, the public policies and arguments made by pundits are generally in lack of understanding in international law. It is now the time for Korea to commence on long-term cross-academia / department plans to establish Dokdo strategy as part of the nationwide maritime strategy effectively using international law as its stronghold.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the blind control strategy and method which reduce negative effect of incoming daylight on visual comfort of occupants, minimize psychological anxieties caused by frequent motions of a blind, and maximize positive effect of incoming daylight by opening/closing of a blind. In previous researches on blind controls, major problem is that the time interval and amount of blind movement do not meet the control objective at the inflected zone of solar profile curve. To overcome these limitations revealed in theprevious researches, following tasks were performed in this study. i)To establish the control objective to accomplish the goal of this study. ii)To develop the control methods and algorithms which prevent glare on the work-plane at any time and which control the time interval and amount of blind movement to follow the control objective at various solar profile angle curves. This study proposed the control strategy and method that define the base control section implying the inflection point within the control objective zone and subsequently, divide the control sections for the residual time zones. The proposed strategy and method are found to increase the incoming daylight and solar irradiation by 0 to 15 %.

  • Recently, the nine-switch inverter has been proposed as a dual output inverter. To date, studies on the control strategies for NSIs have been mostly combined with their application. However, in this paper, a mathematical model and control strategy for nine-switch inverters has been proposed in view of the topology. A switching function model and equivalent circuit model of a nine-switch inverter have been built in ${\alpha}{\beta}$ coordinates. Then, a novel current observer with an improved integrator is proposed based on the switching function model, and a direct power control strategy is proposed. No current sensors are used in the proposed strategy, and only two voltage sensors are employed. The performance of the proposed control method is verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • This paper presents a theoretical study of a model predictive control (MPC) strategy employed in semi-active control system with magnetorheological (MR) dampers to reduce the responses of seismically excited structures. The MPC scheme is based on a prediction model of the system response to obtain the control actions by minimizing an objective function, which can compensate for the effect of time delay that occurred in real application. As an example, a 5-story building frame equipped with two 20 kN MR dampers is presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed MPC scheme for addressing time delay and reducing the structural responses under different earthquakes, in which the predictive length l = 5 and the delayed time step d = 10, 20, 40, 60, 100 are considered. Comparison with passive-off, passive-on, and linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control strategy indicates that MPC scheme exhibits good control performance similar to the LQG control strategy, both have better control effectiveness than two passive control methods for most cases, and the MPC scheme used in semi-active control system show more effectiveness and robustness for addressing time delay and protecting structures during earthquakes.
